HarryVanWinkle -> Females vs. Women (9/11/2006 7:54:00 AM)

I've long wondered about the psychology of those who always refer to half of our species as "females," never as "women."

I see somebody write "male seeks female" and wonder if he's an appliance which plugs itself in.  Or, perhaps, a Siamese cat who's taken charge of its own breeding.  It's not a laziness thing; "man seeks woman" is certainly no harder to type.  I've seen posters on these boards who ask a series of questions about females without ever using the word "women."

I've known more than a few men who do this in real life.  It's always "females" never "women" as if women were some sort of alien species.  Most such men that I've known personally were absolutely clueless about women and, I think, perpetual virgins themselves.

For myself, I like women.  I adore women.  I worship the dirt women walk on.  Often, I wish I WAS the dirt a woman walked on.  But, I'm not so hot of females.  I have a female cat; she can be a real pain in the ass.  I once had a female dog; she was hyper as hell.  I've ridden female horses.  I've milked female bovines.  I've never been sexually attracted to any of them.  Only to women.

I'm wondering how the women on these boards react to posts and profiles which frequently use the word "females" and never "women."  Do they cause you to wonder about the guys who post them?

Call me anything you like, but do not call me late for dinner[:D]

On a dating site, especially one as alternative as this one, "female" may help to screen out any non-biologically born genetic females.

But generally in this context, no it doesn't give me much pause.

I am Woman, hear me roar.

zumala -> RE: Females vs. Women (9/11/2006 8:04:28 AM)

The context of the sentence around the term is what makes the difference to me, I think.  Of course, being a biologist, I feel comfortable with applying the term female to myself.  It is a statement of fact.  However, it is more personal (and personable) to refer to a female human as a woman.  It is the correct social term.  But really it's all about how picky you want to be.

Female fox or vixen?  Male goose or gander?  Female cow or heifer?

It's all semantics.  It IS possible to demean someone by refering to them as 'a female' in a negative context.  But you could also do that with statement containing the word women instead.

If I were to use the terms "female" or "woman" it would be to indicate either sexual identity or gender identity. There are women out there are not female. There are people who do not neatly fit into "male" or "female" either.

MstrssPassion -> RE: Females vs. Women (9/11/2006 8:07:20 AM)

In spoken conversation one might pick up that there is a certain context of use toward saying female as opposed to woman but I'm not sure that this nuance can be communicated to the point of picking up on it here. (in written form)

I use both words when describing myself or other women. I have used both female dominant or dominant woman & both mean exactly the same thing to me. When selecting these words in a written form... I tend to look at the whole sentence & how the words "look".

I guess I could also add that when using the word woman the feel of the statement is slightly more personal/intimate/familiar as to when I use female to which the feel is more general/impersonal.

Maybe my question would require a new thread but could you please expand upon this.

What brought this subject to my mind this morning was the O.P. of this thread.

I see the word "females" in it six times.  Not once does he use the word "women" or "girls."

considering the source... I wouldn't put much thought into it

Woman and man are gender identities, gender roles, each society has it's own idea of what it means to be a man or a woman (or something else sometimes). Or as I told my students last week if a manly man showed up here from 16th century England he'd think you guys were barbarians and certain not manly men.

Sex is biological. And no, there are not just two sexual categories. Some people are born with qualities of both or other issues. I don't want to use the term "problems" because I think this promotes the fiction of only two sexes.

Santa Vaca!  No links LA?  Don't tell me I actually came up with an original question!

MstrssPassion -> RE: Females vs. Women (9/11/2006 8:29:32 AM)

I agree... only having two sexes is fiction

LaTigresse -> RE: Females vs. Women (9/11/2006 8:39:46 AM)

It is an interesting thought to ponder. Not something I have ever thought about. As much as I enjoy torturing the english language for new and interesting ways to word the same old thoughts I have even been known to say the phrase "the female of the species" as well as the same for men,  I know I don't mean anything deeper or insulting by it. Just a play on words. However, all things considered, it is a good subject.

Considering that the topic was about tomboys, I dont think its at all strange to use  the word female.

In fact, the word doesnt normally bother me at all.  I like being female, I like being referred to as a female, or a girl, or a woman, or a bitch for that matter, just dont call me a lady.  Now that would piss me off.

Seems like your own personal hang-up.  Not everyone views the term as a derrogative.

My thoughts exactly.....

EvilGeoff -> RE: Females vs. Women (9/11/2006 8:53:34 AM)

I'm rather fond of women who are females.  Not that I dislike women who are males, but there is a difference, and one I am cognizant of and appreciate.

Why does this conversation remind me of a certain argument from Monty Python's Life of Brian

*LOL*

HarryVanWinkle -> RE: Females vs. Women (9/11/2006 8:53:50 AM)

I certainly don't view the word "female" as derogatory.  In natural speech and writing most everyone uses it, myself included.  My question is about those who seem to use it to the exclusion of all other possible words when referring to female human beings.

When a guy uses only the word "females" to refer to females, I get the impression that deep down he feels that women are something less than, or at least other than, human.

LaTigresse -> RE: Females vs. Women (9/11/2006 8:55:14 AM)

Harry, I got where you were going with that which is why I found it thought provoking.

MstrssPassion -> RE: Females vs. Women (9/11/2006 9:05:19 AM)

like I said... you really have to consider the source [sm=goodnight.gif]

this particular usage nullifies the statement  I made about words not being able to convey certain nuances in writen form... sometimes it is just so IN YOUR FACE one can't miss it
