ORIGINAL: socalbbwsub I think I might actually like football if I understood it. I don't understand that first and down stuff. Ladies, it's so simple if you get just this part... the rest is just details. When your team has the ball, they have 4 tries to move it 10 yards. Everytime someone is tackled or the ball goes down out of bounds, etc.. is 1 try. this is called "a Down". 1st down, 2nd down, 3rd down, 4th down. If you move the ball 3 yards on the first "try"... you have 7 yards to go to get 10. "First and 7" means, first try (down) , and still 7 yards to go to make your 10. Now, if your second try gets you 3 more yards, you have 6 total, and 4 more to go to get the full 10. That will be called "2nd and 4" If team moves the ball 10 yards in those 4 tries, they "earn" another 4 tries to get 10 MORE yards. how cool is that? If you use all 4 downs, and don't score.. the other guys get the ball wherever it's at. This is where field goals and kicking off to the other team come in. By the 4th try (or "4th down") a choice is made to continue trying to make 10 yards, or kick a field goal to try to get some points before turning the ball over to them. If it looks for sure they can't make a touchdown, field goal, or earn a new 1st down (4 more tries) they will kick the ball to the other team, to avoid turning over posession so close to their side, giving the opponant a huge advantage. The whole game is about moving the ball, 10 yards at a time, til you score... while selling as much beer, sports apparell and GMC trucks as possible. The guy with the biggest endorsement contract wins.
