Inappropriate Msgs: Possible Solution - 9/13/2006 8:25:22 PM

I continuously see CM members complaining, both in forums and journals, that they receive reams of inappropriate messages (and even hate mail), often from individuals who have evidently not read the recipient's profile. I believe this may be driving people away from the site. I'd like to propose a partial solution...

It strikes me that sending a message here is too easy to do without thinking; a message form appears under the short version of a member profile. I suggest this form be removed, so that a writer must click through to the Full Profile in order to access a message form.

This may inconvenience scrupulous members a little, but we all benefit from a reduction in unwanted mail and hounded members.

Thoughts?

They'd just scroll by, but it's a good thought.

Not to be cynical, but this wouldn't change anything. People would simply click through quickly and proceed to send a message without reading, all the same.

How about a message thread where all vile mail is aired? Exposing carreer culprits might have some effect. If you cant have your words publicized, then don't send them.

Regarding my prior post...It would show newcomers  a true cross section of citizens here.

It is good that you looked for a solution rather than fixate on the problem. Will it work?..possibly to a minimal extent IMO only...but do not forget that those who tend toward hate mail or the like are simply individuals with nothing better to do than peruse profiles they wish to lambast..As for being contacted by someone who did not read a profile ie: one who is already collared etc..well once again you may have someone who possibly hopes that they can convince the other that they are better than what the collared one has or that their viewpoints will be changed..in either case I doubt that removing this certain feature will stop people such as this..but it was definitely a good thought..thank you......Tempting

The problem is, these people don't think they are doing anything wrong. They enjoy being annoying. The best thing to do is block them and forget about them.

Appreciate the thought, but the number of complaints about "sucky emails" has not increased with the introduction of the feature.

Really the only thing to do with mail you don't want is to throw it away.

I'm a webmaster... Creating an extra step, of clicking through, DOES affect user behavior. It's almost guaranteed to reduce the volume of messages. By how much, I couldn't say, in this case. This doesn't force a writer to read the profile, but it does make them do more work to write.

Yanno, on this site, I'm sure you can find hundreds of webMasters who only contribute to the problem.  Did you take the course, Mastering Online 101?

What?? And deprive me of the wonderful e-mail I got today which consisted entirely of: "Available?" What a cruel deprivation that would be.

Kudos for coming up with an idea rather than another complaint.

An enhancement to the msg form (on the full profile page) would be to add an unmarked checkbox with the label:

"I have read this member's entire profile and my message is appropriate to their interests and wishes."

Again, it's another step between the notion of sending a message and the execution. And it puts the writer on notice that they will violate the terms of use by writing something inappropriate.

A method used by some employers to reduce the number of  "spam" job applications, is to have a series of questions that the applicant has to answer before they are allowed to apply.  In this venue, the questions (determined by the profile author) might be something like:

Are you a dominant male?

Are you single?

Are you looking for a long-term relationship?

Are you between the ages of 40 and 55?

Etcetera, with a radio button yes/no response.  Any question answered in a way that the author considers negatively would block that person from sending messages.  To help ensure that the questions are read and considered, they would need to be written so that the favorable response for some would be "yes" and some "no".

*shrugs*  It might work.  It might not.  It definitely wouldn't guarantee that someone wouldn't simply lie.

I read just today on another thread that you were offering that course to wannabes, 19.95 or 29.95? It seems you charge different rates to different doms (WEG)

I dont know I kinda like the spam emails from wannabes,  mostly I ignore them but other times if I am in the mood to play I will send off a funny scarcastic cutting email.

I think the number of posts are mostly to discuss what others get and how silly it truly is.  How many times have you been in a club/bar/whatever and been approached by someone with a poor approach?  This is rather similar, just much easier to walk away

This only works IF such mail is driving people away. I suggest that it is not happening and people are leaving for a couple of reasons.

Firstly the CM system is so unwieldy that on the CM side it is still ta,king me up tom 20 minutes to post a messager or reply. yep on a timer the bloody message sits there for close to 20 frigging minutes day in and day out before it is processed. On this side it tales mostly 10 to 15 minutes to get a post accepted.,. NOW before y'all jump in and say it is my puter, I have been talking to others in three other states her in the Land Down Under and we are all having the same problem. Tired of informing the help people and getting not a single word in reply.

Secondly it may be because CM is biased againsy non US citizens. This is supported by inside information that there are US People who can get away with the most fragrent breaches of ToS and remain un touched or even spoken to yet the same breaches happens by others and the are severly moderated. Even the much vaunted Mod 11 has commented ito me that they could ban all Australia and there is nothing we could do  (heh wrong according to the lawyers in NY I talk to)..

So yeah there are reasons who some bloody good folk have left and it is mothing to do with the crap mail which happenes.....

G'day Dnomyar,

Mate I'm not disputing this. isusspect that there mat be different servers set for different locations. Ok I know MSN Groups and Chat have them all over the worls and such problems were local. I don't know how many Aussies or even Kiwis are having this problem, but those I have talked to here spread over Aussie are having similar problems which illiminates it being my computer. In fact the other two computers I have here have the same delays too. Part of my bitch about bias against non US based people is with all the messages I have left with the tech support people here not one has had the good manner to say anything. my information from inside sources is that they prioritise the services for the US and the rest of us can go to buggery. This is also the attitude of mods too, again according to my inside sources. Frankly I only poke my head in CM these days due to a few really wonderfull people who I enjoy spending time with even though we are often on external messenger with regularly. I like others can put up with much of the shit attitudes but when it combines with terrible service/delays it just gets a bit much and certainly removes any joy or pleasure in trying to do anything other than reading forums and not posting..

At another site I used to frequent, the ability for non-premium members to send messages to other non-premium members was completely removed. There's still the ability to send email via the Internet, and those who know that, still send out annoying messages.
