KenDckey -> The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/19/2006 4:17:55 PM)

This thread has many segments.  Maybe you can come up with more.

1 - should the draft be reinstated?

2 - Assuming it is reinstated should women be drafted?

3 - Assuming it is renstated should men only be drafted?

4 - Assuming it is reinstated which party do you think reinstated it?

5 - Assuming it is reinstated what age groups should be drafted?

1 - should the draft be reinstated?

No- We have enough people in this country that are willing to serve. I think in many respects this is a different generation that is thankful for the freedoms we have in this country and are willing to defend it.

WyrdRich -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/19/2006 4:26:25 PM)

     I'll add a question if I may

Under what circumstances would you support a draft?

KenDckey -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/19/2006 4:28:16 PM)

I appreciate your opinion.   The only thing I take issue with is because of the lack of volunteers, they have to pay huge enlistment bonuses, they changed the upper age limit on who can join and they are still having major problems making quotas.

Very valid question.   Unfortunately I don't believe that there can be an all encompasssing answer.   Definately in General Mobilization though where all out war is both declared and being prosecuted against the US

pleasetame -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/19/2006 4:33:19 PM)

and we pay politicians huge salaries...enlistment bonuses are earned and deserved.

I won't argue that   I got a re-enlistment bonus once.

I cant say I would unless we were being invaded

KenDckey -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/19/2006 4:40:24 PM)

I have an idea    why don't we draft only women.   then there would be enough comfort troops for the guys.  I shouldn't have said that   I was being bad.   sorry   lol

By that time, it is too late.

sissifytoserve -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/19/2006 4:48:45 PM)

The draft shouldn't be re-instated......BUT

If it does by force........sons and daughters of politicians should have to fight.

After all....they are the ones who want war.

servantforuse -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/19/2006 4:52:02 PM)

To me this is a mute point. The draft will not be reinstated. The military is to high-tech. They are not interested in having draftees in the service that don't want to be there.

This thread has many segments.  Maybe you can come up with more.

1 - should the draft be reinstated?
Not at this time.  If it does happen, I believe there must be a non-military national service option.

2 - Assuming it is reinstated should women be drafted?
Yes  (edited to add:  combat roles open some really big cans of worms)

4 - Assuming it is reinstated which party do you think reinstated it?
I cannot see it being successful in this political climate without coming from a Democrat.

5 - Assuming it is reinstated what age groups should be drafted?
21-29.  Until they can legally have a drink, Uncle Sam can't make them go get shot at.  Younger volunteers would be welcome.

I agree with you Sir, until they can legally drink they should not have to serve!!

KenDckey -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/19/2006 5:02:35 PM)

Fifty-one years ago, Herman James, a North Carolina mountain man, was drafted by the Army.

On his first day in basic training, the Army issued him a comb.
That afternoon the Army barber sheared off all his hair

On his second day, the Army issued Herman a toothbrush.
That afternoon the Army dentist yanked seven of his teeth.

On the third day, the Army issued him a jock strap
The Army has been looking for Herman for 51 years.

stolen from LotusSong but I thought it appropriate to interject a little humor at this point

Actually on base only, they can drink 3.2 beer.   I never did but I don't like the taste of beer

peterK50 -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/19/2006 6:36:29 PM)

No, I don't think we need a draft, although it would be a good idea for social equality. As the gap between rich & poor widens the military will be seen by more & more in the lower economic strata as a chance to get away from impovrishment. As minorities do more of the fighting & dying the more & more palitable it will become to the majority.

1 - should the draft be reinstated?
Yes….absolutely. Every time the draft is brought up / comes to mind, I hope and pray a contingent of overzealous politicians makes it a reality.

It’s my feeling that it would really open the eyes of the many……and perhaps even start a ‘’ mini’’ revolution that destroys both parties.

The problem with this actually becoming a reality though….. Is everyday more and more of the military is becoming privatized at tax payer expense.

During the first Gulf there was 50:1 ratio of US troops vs. private contractors. In the new Iraq war, there is a 10:1 ratio of US troops vs. private contractors { Information here is compliments of the Rand
corporation}

2 - Assuming it is reinstated should women be drafted?
Yes….. most definitely –The more young women are hurt / slaughtered in the name of nation-building and unnecessary war, the more fuel there is to fan the flames of revolution

quote:

3 - Assuming it is renstated should men only be drafted?
Absolutely not. Without women/mothers thrown into the mix….. the nation’s level tolerance /melting point becomes much higher. Like I said... we need women to fan the flames HIGH

quote:

4 - Assuming it is reinstated which party do you think reinstated it?

Actually….. I hope it’s a bi-partisan plan / decision – The more both parties can be/ are demonized, the better off the American people will be in the long run

quote:

5 - Assuming it is reinstated what age groups should be drafted?

I hope they draft everyone 18 – 55, including those whose prior services commitments have expired.

I don’t care if the provocation includes a mini-suitcase nuke stolen from the Russians….. I’d have to get my binoculars out, travel to the cliffs on the Oregon coast and see an armada of war ships filled with towelheads or Chinese before you could get me to take up arms and expose myself to depleted uranium. Besides.... I'd rather have the option to throw down with neocon instead.

Lashra -> RE: The Draft - 5 Questions for Discussion (9/19/2006 7:20:32 PM)

I have a suggestion. For all the illegal immigrants in this country if they truly wish to stay and be Americans they most certainly can prove their loyalty by joining the US military and recieve their greencard when they have fulfilled their time however long that maybe.
