What lisaSea says is very true. In a lot of countries the family sleeps on the floor. It's always been their way of life. As long as the sub has no health issues there is nothing wrong with sleeping on the floor.

For me, when Fox does sleep on the floor in my room, the reasons are complex and reflect our individual relationship.

First, he sleeps in a sleeping bag on the time -- his choice, he has a decent bed but he doesn't want to mess with sheets and blankets plus he likes the feeling of being a bit confined.

Second, my husband sleeps in our bed with me. There isn't room for them both and as much as he loves Fox as a friend he doesn't want to sleep with him.

Third, yes, it does re-emphasis that Fox is my slave, not my lover, not my spouse, not my boyfriend, not my submissive, but my property.

That said I like sleeping with another person so unless he's been bad (he has to work at being that) when we go on trips together he does sleep with me. I think he'd rather sleep on the floor or another bed (I kick and stuff when I sleep) but I want someone to cuddle while I sleep and I'm the boss so he sleeps with me.

I believe it was Dean Martin who stated "You are not really drunk if you can still hold on to the floor."

Just me, etc.

p.s. to address the thread.  Sometimes when I wake up in the morning the compass is pointing north and I want to make quick
use of my submissive.  For me, giving her rug burns on her face is something for later in the day, not right when I wake up.

Reply to OP:

I've never been in a situation where I lived with or stayed at the same home of the dominant I was involved with, so it's not been an issue for me yet.

I would prefer, I think, to have separate quarters, though.  Sleeping in the same bed would feel....I dont know....too much like husband and wife for me.....like lovers all snuggled up.  gack!!

For this slave, sleeping on the floor is not humiliating, degrading, or painful.  It's just where i sleep and i like it.  It's my space.  It also happens to be in my Master's bedroom closet and it is very comfortable and comforting to me.  i have never slept in my Master's bed, although there have been a few times when He had me lay with Him for awhile before going to sleep.  He doesn't like to sleep with anyone, because He doesn't get a restful night's sleep that way.  i don't think i could sleep very well that way, either.  i am not on a hard floor.  i use the same air mattress and sleeping bag i use when i go camping, which is nice because i never have to get used to a "new bed".  Sleeping in His closet doesn't make me feel any more submissive to Him, either, since i feel just as submissive when i am sitting beside Him in the car driving down the road.  It's not about where i am physically.  It's all about where i am mentally and i am always a slave to Him there (in my head, that is, even when it doesn't look that way in the real world).

since i dont get to sleep with Daddy every night, i'd give my left leg to sleep on the floor next to his bed, be grateful for what you have.

I've often wondered about this practice and wondered what motivates it.

It is as natural for a slave to sleep on the floor as it is for her to go naked in my house. Collared and leashed to my bed, she is provided floor pillows, a bowl of water, and a blanket.

She is likewise not allowed to use furniture; the floor is her place always, unless I allow otherwise. This is as much a reminder to a slave of her status as it is a conditioning for animality.

Ohhh, I saw this and got a soft tingly feeling way down deep. I have only been allowed to sleep on the floor, leashed, and chained once. It was during a wonderful visit out west with some friends. I can honestly say that it was one of the most content set of nights that I have ever known. Just feeling that cold steel all wrapped up around my legs, it just created a safe feeling around me. It gave the small space physically that is so often saught mentally. Oh what a wonderful thing to think about for the days runnings..

He uses it as a reinforcement that I am -not- his lover or his mate. It isn't any more complicated than that. It is exclusionary in the sense that it is one of the many ways that the hierarchy and *how* he sees me is clearly defined. I'm grateful everytime he allows me to curl up next to him, it is creative deprivation, and it works..

I've often wondered about this practice and wondered what motivates  it.
When a Dominant decides to make a submissive sleep on the floor at the foot of the bed, beside the bed, what is it that they are hoping to accomplish?  It seems a practice prevelant to female Dominants, is that so?
Is this a form of humiliation?  Objectification?   A test of loyalty?  I wish i understood it. I think i can only see it as hurtfully exclusionary (not sure if thats a word..lol)  I certainly don't feel that it's physically healthy. So whats the attraction?
Do submissives enjoy this?  To me it kind of represents a lack of concern for the well being of ones property.
I understand that this may be an example of "to each their own"  it's just something that has always tugged at my mind.

Any input?

Ive slept on the floor, and on the bed. The bed is softer, but with 3 people in it, nobody sleeps very well. The floor is roomier, and I get plenty of blankets, so its quite comfy. Do I have a preference-yes. My preference would be a California King so we could all be comfy together. For now, though, I will sleep where Im told.

Completely different perspective:

I enjoy sleeping on the floor because I find it comfortable.  It does not evoke submissive feelings in me, but sometimes, when I cannot sleep, I get off my bed and lie on my back on the floor and sleep.

Now, if I were told to do so by my (hypothetical) Domme, I am sure it would be more emotional, but as of right now, it's the same as any other sleeping position for me - whatever feels best.

Yours,

benji

When I was younger I do not think this would have been a problem. I was young and limber and I could sleep through anything or anywhere.  It woul,d not have caused me a great deal of discomfort or lost sleep.

I do think that it is a wellness and health issue for me today. I will not sleep on the floor. I need rest to function and to be happy. I have suffered from panic and depression in the past and going without proper rest could make me relapse. My body gets sore more easily today than it used to, and my wellness matters to me enough to where I will not sleep on the floor for someone. Perhaps that makes me less "submissive", but Im okay with that. I would have to wonder about someone who would chance me being sleep deprived and altering my brain chemistry into being unwell just to prove to them i was "submissive". My wellness should matter.

It isn't an issue for my Daddy, he likes me in his bed when we are together.

F.R.

When we discussed this Sir said that i'd only be put to sleep on the floor for punishment. Personally i prefer to be at his side where I can feel and touch him and vice versa

I can see where it would be used to maintain the ideal of submissiveness but i don't think i'd ever be happy if i was banished to the floor all the time.

I don't do it because I want my slave next to me plus I have a King Sized bed and there's plenty of room.
A sub/slave would have to f-up pretty badly for me to make her sleep on the floor chained to the bed.
I'd rather use a good hard caning to punish her.

I have only been instructed to sleep on the floor once..........the instruction came via text and I threw my duvet and pillows on the floor in a bit of a *sniffy mood* as I had no idea what had promted it.

The next morning I asked a rather bemused Master WHY he'd done this .....and he knew nothing about it....I checked my phone.... I checked it again........nope, no text.... I had dreamt that I'd recieved the instruction.

My Master's comment, after laughing rather too heartily for my liking, was......*It's nice to see you can behave when you're asleep, now we just have to accomplish that when you're awake*.....lol

On the *health* comment.....sleeping on the floor isn't exactly a major hardship, unless you have particular health *issues*. I've certainly had to *endure* worse............lol

Thank You all so much for the input, opinions and explanations. I'll try and answer specific questions that were raised.

The reason i stated that this practice seemed more prevelant with female Dominants was simply due to the fact that in my experience, i've heard of...or come across more female Dominants who practice this than males. It was in no way meant to imply anything derogatory towards female Doms.

The health issues, again, i can only go by my own experience, and while i can sleep well on an air mattress, ( i like to go camping also) if i sleep  on a very hard bed, let alone a cold hard floor, i wake up so stiff and sore, (if i sleep at all) that i awake feeling like a not very spry 90 yr old. My work is physically demanding, so a good nights sleep in physical comfort is imperative . Also, due to my line of work, i'm more aware than many about how terribly dirty carpet and rugs are regardless of how often or well vacuumed they are, so the fact that the sub/slave may have quilts or pillows between them and the rug is a bit of a relief.

I  meant no direspect or disregard for anyones practices, i just had a desire to have a better understanding of this particular practice.

That being said, someone suggested that i should be "grateful for what i have", as they cannot spend nights with their Master.  I'm sure i would be grateful for what i had, if i actually had a Dominant partner at this time, but since i do not, i'll be grateful for the fact that Y'all were so willing to share your ideas and experiences regarding this, and all other valuable information i derive from this forum.

I have never had a Dominant require this of me, but have heard of it so often that i really wanted to dig deep into the subject so that if it were to arise, i would be armed with more than my preconceived notions regarding this.

Thanks again...

I have not done this, but I have had a slave stand beside the bed in winter, nude for 5 minutes after playing. It was not punishment, but only me showing her the control I have over her. However, I think that is relatively light in comparison to having someone sleep on the floor all night with all the resulting frustration.

In reading through the thread, most consider it physically safe and more of a means of humiliation, but my thought when I use humiliation is that it is an emotional and mental affect without being too taxing physically or annoying. If I want to beat and torture, I’ll do that in a completely different way. I want humiliation, brief, sexy and not just a mild annoyance.
