How about Subway? Anyone find them helpful in eating a bit healthier?

I'm the first to admit, I love junk food. Whopper with cheese, mayo, and bacon. Deep dish cheese lovers pizza. Fried chicken. Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

But, it appears my body is rebelling against all this grease and fat; the last couple of weeks, I've had a couple of bouts with diarreha (sp?) after chowing down on some crappy food. A sign, me thinks.....

Level, you need some home cooked meals, my friend!  Meanwhile, eat some fruit and clear your poor system out!

ownedgirlie -> RE: Want some fries with that? (9/22/2006 7:49:27 PM)

I need to correct the Food Pyramid link I provided earlier.  The actual government sponsored link is www.mypyramid.gov.  The link I provided earlier is kind of a spoof on that - interesting, but not accurate.  Looks the same though, but that explains why some of the links didn't work.

Thanks to the kind person who pointed that out to me :)

Bag of Pasta 5 meals worth                                             $2
Bag of rice (unbleached)                                                  $2

Onions                                                                            $2
Potatos                                                                           $2
Tea                                                                                 $1.50

For the beginning of the quote, remove the "/" from before the word "quote."  The slash indicates end of quote.  No slash indicates beginning of quote.

When I tell people from back home that I live 45 mins from the nearest Subway / McDonalds, they're flabbergasted that I could put up with conditions like that. But every time I talk to them I tell that it’s a blessing and I'm actually glad about.

Not to stir the pot too much.... but I literally feel like a ''slug'' after I've eaten one of the greasy burgers, fries or tacos from one of these trans-fat havens. However...if I was on the road and had to stop somewhere because it was late.... it would be Subway. I'd pick something lean like one of their advertised ''low carb wraps'' plain, with no mayo or any sauces. Then the next day….I’d make sure to follow through with an extra mile’s worth of road work. Carrying on from Archer's list of wholesome cheap food.

Is Liver good for you,  it is certainly cheap and I love it.

Irishblu -> RE: Want some fries with that? (9/23/2006 3:47:30 AM)

Thanks owned!!

sharainks -> RE: Want some fries with that? (9/23/2006 4:47:59 AM)

Archer,

Thank you for your list.  I thought about doing that.  The point is well made that with some effort on the consumer's part eating at home is far easier on the budget.

Its very easy to fall into the trap of "I'm too tired to cook."  Crockpots are wonderful for this problem.  The food is started mornings and done when you get home.

RE:  Subway,  Anyone remember "Jared"?
http://www.subway.com/subwayroot/menunutrition/jared/index.aspx

The last time I saw a Subway commercial w/ him in it I heard him mention exercise along w/ his eating habits at Subway.  This was the first time that I noticed exercise was mentioned.

Exercise & a good food program work hand in hand together.  One w/o the other doesn't seem to work very well for most.

------------

Not to be showing my age here or anything, but I remember back in the 60's stopping once every few weeks w/ the family at McD's for a meal consisting of:

1 sm cheeseburger
1 sm fries
1 reg. drink/shake

That same family would now order a meal something like:

1 quarter pounder w/ cheese
1 large fries
1 large drink

P.S.  "Supersize" that  [sm=ofcourse.gif]

----------------------------

These days I have become much more health/food aware.  I eat protein, prefer salads and veggies, try to consume more water, I take more vitamins and I park further away from store entrances.

I am with you on this, I am a retired chef and I love to cook. I can spend $50 and feed my wife and 3 children plus our submissive when she comes up for the weekend on this for a week. We rarely eat fast food and it is only when we are driving someplace and have no other choice. Even then I would rather pull into a full service restaurant and order something like a grilled chicken Caesar salad rather than a hamburger and fries that are full of fat and carbs. Do understand that it has taken 50 years for me to realize that I need to watch what I eat, but I finally got the idea after 6 bypasses and 2 stints on my heart. Trust me you want to try and eat healthier if it is at all possible.

Liver-somehow the idea of eating something designed to process wastes in the body kind of squicks me.  I also hate the taste.

I take it, then, you will be passing on the chitterlings.

The only way I eat liver is if it is in some boudain, or dirty rice.

Not even paté, Level?
Come now. It's paté, after all.
