Peter, as an American Citizen I couldn't give a fiddler's fuck what people in foreign countries "think" about me or my country.
You want to see them really start squawking?
Start cutting off the Welfare Checks ("Foreign Aid") that we're STILL giving to more than 130 countries thanks to the lobbyists on "K" st, yup, your's and my Tax Dollars!
Now THAT would be *FUNNY!!!*

I think there is also a difference between respecting Americans and American culture and what people think of the current American administration.
Nodz...I certainly hope so, I would hate to think the Gov't is what people get their impressions from. It's like I never prejudged the British, never even really had an opinion actually until some sub friends of ours from England popped over to visit on a Holiday (bearing gifts even..shirts from Warr's Harley Davidson). Luckily for Seeks & NortherGent, it was an awesome visit, so see, I'm not tolerating you, I rather like y'all. I'm still a bit confused about the biscuit thing (cheeky never did understand biscuits and gravy) however...ha ha. I prefer to get my impressions of a country through the common folk...the beaurocrats are pretty much an odd lot no matter where you look.

The United States is hated as much as it is because it's foreign policy sucks bollocks.  They have a bad habit of sticking their nose where it has no business being.  Of course other countries hate them like they do.

While I don't see thing from quite the fatalistic view that some others see them, I completely agree that America needs another skilled diplomat like former President Clinton, no matter what party he or she comes from.

Clinton may have been a better diplomat and his administration certainly more competent than the warhawk-in-chief we have now, but, don't think that Clinton was really much of a breath of fresh air.  His dubious bombing campaign of Serbia.  Bombing a medicine factory in Sudan.  Adopting many right-wing economic policies, such as deregulating the entire broadcast industry to the point where one single company owns 1,200 mostly terrible radio stations across the United States.

The problems are inherent in both parties, not just the one currently in power.

This really says it all.  This type of arrogant, cowboy mentality is what gets us, in the best scenario, ridiculed by the rest of the world, and in the worst case, fosters resentment and hatred even if the majority of Americans don't exactly think this way.

Besides, I am sure many of those countries around the world, especially the ones where corrupt or dictatorial regimes are supported by Washington, would breathe a sigh of relief when those tax dollars stop coming...at least then, they might have a chance to run their own country instead of seeing money go into the pockets and bellies of corrupt leaders and dictators.  See countries like Chile in the 70s, Nicaragua, Honduras, Haiti, etc. for example.

The conclusive factor is Dave Grohl's band, The FooFighters.

Any country which can produce such a man, band and music ought to make him their foreign minister, and send him on a world tour, starting in my home town.

The advantages are clear;
1) the world sees that America is different to the stereotype and not everyone thinks the same way there
2) the tour would produce a lot of business in each country it visited, reducing the tax burden on the US and UK in propping them up
3) I'd get to see the FooFighters without having to travel
4-10) see point 3)

This type of  arrogant, superior supercilious and smug mentality is what gets your "type", in the best scenario, ridiculed by so many Americans (when they bother to answer you at all), and in the worst case, fosters resentment and hatred even if the majority of Americans do't think exactly this way.

It certainly doesn't engender communications, cause "ya'll know it all already".

Just saying ...

Gee, I didn't realize that it was part of the job description of OUR govt. to run our policies, foreign and domestic based on what people in foreign countries *may* or may not think.

Peter, do you REALLY think that some olive grower in Portugal actually *cares* about U.S. policy? I mean really, there's this guy who grows olives in Portugal and as he's drinking his coffee at 0600 he blows a gasket about U.S. policy???
Do you think he blew a gasket when Clinton killed all those innocent people on that train in Yugoslavia?
If that's too far fetched for ya how about a taxi driver in Italy?
This guy's sipping his esspresso one afternoon and he goes balistic because of American policy?

They should stop caring about what we do when we stop caring, and interfering, with what other countries do.

Sub I agree with you but when we stop "interfereing" and stop printing Foreign Aid checks there's going to be a hell of a lot of noise!
And that is something I'd like to see in our next President!
Bush has no balls to do that.

The US and Americans are still liked and respected in my opinion by the way; the world knows this is all to do with the crazy foreign policy decisions of a government led by an idiot, and then our great leader proving himself even more an idiot than yours by following him.

You forgot to mention that much of that "aid" comes with many strings attached, and those strings often outweigh, for the people, the benefits of that "aid".  Argentina is a great example.
