Status: offline 		I am originally from Niles, Michigan also.  I miss the four seasons.....There are a few things about Niles that may not necessarily be "famous" but interesting.

1. Underground RailRoad
2. Train station is in ALOT of movies
3. House of ShadowFind originated there
4. St. Joseph River - it runs backwards
5. Ft. St. Joseph
6. Montgomery Ward
7. The Dodge Brothers
8. The country's greatest literary figure:  Ring Lardner
9. Nancy Drew - awesome artist
I am sure there are more if i think about it longer....

Status: offline 		The Erie Canal runs through Lockport and the city’s name derives, of course from the canal locks which lift or lower boats more than sixty feet. A monumental engineering feat for its time. Amongst our other claims to fame:

Author Joyce Carol Oates and Supermodel Kim Alexis are from Lockport.

General Lafayette slept here in 1825.

In 1848, the Lockport Union School was the first public high school to be opened in the nation.

The fire hydrant and steam heat were invented here by Birdsall Holly.

Lockport, a hotbed of abolitionist activity, was a major stop in the Underground Railroad. There are several old houses with hidden compartments for the escaping slaves to hide in.

A bit of Lockport Lore (this probably belongs in the humor section, but I’m putting it here):

In 1860 something (I forget) a woman told a doctor that her mule seemed distressed. He examined the animal and concluded that it was suffering from gas but was "blocked." He told her to buy some castor oil and "with a funnel, enter it into the mule’s nether region." She bought the castor oil but discovered that she didn’t have a funnel big enough to do the job so she decided to use an English horn, that belonged to her brother, instead. She inserted the horn and poured the contents of the bottle, only to discover that she had grabbed the wrong bottle and had poured turpentine instead. This instantly unblocked the poor animal but distressed it even more and it ran away, the horn blasting loudly as the mule’s gas escaped.

The mule ran by the town drunk – who thereafter was noted for his sobriety.

The mule then ran by a Temperance Society meeting, who promptly adjourned the meeting so they could all go get a drink.

At the Union School the band was giving an outdoor performance when the mule ran by – and received a standing ovation. It has also been noted that the kids in the band quit their musical studies.

The mule ran by a church and the Pastor had to spend his next Sunday sermon assuring the congregation that there was no such thing as a "mule of the apocalypse."

The mule ran toward the canal and as it approached the draw bridge, the bridge operator thought he heard a canal boat signaling to raise the bridge. The mule ran off the bridge and into the canal. The unfortunate mule was rescued and eventually made a full recovery but this incident would cost the bridge operator dearly. He was a candidate for county sheriff and was considered a shoe-in for the job but upon the election received only seven votes. Inquiries at local taverns revealed a general belief amongst the population that any man who can’t tell the difference between a canal boat and a mule with an English horn stuck up it’s ass obviously lacks the discernment necessary to be sheriff.

It is not know if the woman returned the English horn to her brother or informed him of what uses it had been put to.

Status: offline 		We are famous for psychotic people.  They settle here when they get out of the mental institution in the neighboring town.  It is kind of disturbing actually.

Other than that we have a micro brewery that nobody has ever heard about (Robert Simpsons if you happen to see it somewhere).  It is not too bad I guess.  Not My favorite.

Not much else.  We are what is known as a "sleeper town".  People move here to get away from Toronto, bringing all the scumbags with them.  They sleep here at night and take all their work and business to Toronto during the day.

Status: offline 		my home town is Liberty, Missouri and is known as the town where Jesse James commited the first daylight bank robbery...they even have the Jesse James Bank Museum to commemorate that faithful day.

Status: offline 		I should point out by the way that Gurning isn't the only thing that happens in my hometowns annual fair, which has been occurring since the year 1245.

We also erect a very tall pole in the middle of town, smear it with grease, attach a leg of lamb to the top and amuse ourselves by watching people slide off and seriously injure themselves.

I don't think Britain defeated Hitler, I think he just had second thoughts.

Status: offline 		My birthtown is Washington DC and that's got a few claims to fame I think.

My current hometown is Austin and it's the capital of Texas and has a few historical bits to it.

My adopted home is Baltimore and that's got a decent block of history to it.

My real hometown is was famous for being where we let the British came up to burn down the White House (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Bladensburg) and is currently most known for gangs and drugs, having the worst high school in the entire state of MD, and the hometown of the guy who played Gunn on Angel.

Status: offline 		I was born in Washington, DC and its famous for Presidents and crack head Mayors Lots of government and cool buildings. One of the few BDSM clubs in the area is in DC.

Science North, where you get to LIVE the experiments (the coolest science place going), and the area is still thought of as a "moon style landscape" however, this is not true - The fishing and hunting is also pretty good tho so can I point out; you can't have hunting on a moon scape.  MAPLE SYRUP SHACKS ...

Youth & Parents: Kitchener - used to be Berlin, because of all the German immigrants then there was this small war, and no one would accept the shipments from "Berlin Canada" and so it was re-named Kitchener.

Currently: And now, I'm in London ... Home of the London Knights hockey team who have had a pretty wild couple of years, and many of whom for the past couple of years have got NHL drafts.  Home of the John Labatt Center, where we get the biggest concerts in the province outside of Toronto, built here because of Labatts' other home factory (Kitchener became quasi museum ish and London got the new working one).  Western Fair at the fair grounds, the biggest fair going (they claim).  The Thames river, which I'm sure was thus named just to further confuse people as to WHICH London it is being discussed.  Where we have more doctors than we know what to do with, and none of them actually practise medicine, and you hear of Western University and their medical breakthroughs and exploits all the time (full organ transplants, first baby carried/born outside the womb, and so on).  Home of Fredrick Banting, the discoveror of insulin ... London Ontario ... Where you can get a triple organ transpant in a jiffy, but those stitches, forget it!!

Status: offline 		Wheeling, WV was the home of the Grand Ole O'pry before it moved to Nashville.
It was home of the longest suspension bridge in the US until the Golden Gate was built.
It's still in use today. hmmmmm or was it the Brooklyn Bridge? Can't remember.

General Ambrose Burnside, Union General in the Civil War, Commanded the Army of the Potamac at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December, 1862. Born at Liberty, Indiana in 1824 and apprenticed as a tailor there prior to entering the United States Military Academy at West Point. Prior to the Civil War, he was credited with inventing the breach loading rifle. Subsequent to the War, he served as United States Senator for Rhode Island. He also gave his name to the sideburn hairstyle.
