fast reply... I think there is something to be said for adopting animals here instead of importing them

< not being a smart ass >

I feel exactly the same way about adopting children, julia.

But I support the individuals right who chose do do otherwise with their own money. I would only object if it was funded by government dollars.

So do I, in fact I have been considering foster parenting when my son becomes of age, I really love kids and I do not need to make anymore of my own....

But if we are going to draw an analogy it would be like saying that we are killing children (I mean the born kind) and then bringing over 300k others. That is not the case. We do not euthanize our children in this country, we do euthanize our domestic animals that have no homes... I am a supporter of giving more to disadvantaged kids in this country BTW, but the kids in Lebanon and in Darfur are dying... I would rather bring old people, women, and children here than animals... especially since we slaughter over 9 million a year already... just an opinion

Edited to say that people can do what they like with their money... But I can state what I wish would happen and what I would do with mine.

[rant]  I live in rural Colorado and just cringe at the number of cats dropped off to fend for themselves.  I love cats, and used to have them in my home all the time...till I developed an allergy.  When I moved to my cabin I inherited Moma Cat and her son, Jeffrey.  In no time I re-named them Moma Cat and Uncle Daddy; as they had kittens together.  Ugg   While she was still nursing (kittens were 12 weeks old), I had her spayed and Uncle Daddy neutered.

The biggest problem for me is how many song-birds they eat!  Birds are easier to catch than mice apparently, and we are loosing our songbirds to the overabundance of housecats!  It’s appalling how many they can eat; the two of them even brought down young turkeys…

IF ever I had a cat again…it would ONLY live inside or with a lidded run outside.  It’s really shocking how many birds are going extinct due to housecats.

And any animal I have is a rescued animal…now that I no longer show them; and always fixed.   [/rant]

PS, when I moved to that cabin, I did a TON of research for exactly the dog breed I wanted...and found one available for addoption several hundred miles away; but he's the best dog I've ever had and everybody loves him.  AND...he keeps the bears away!  <grinz>

I have a stray cat I did not ever want. I did not plan to keep her, she wandered up starving having lost a litter of kittens (her nipples were so swollen she looked like she was pregnant). She was literally falling over from starving, feverish.. I fed her leftovers, and then I bought her food, and then I had her spayed, and then I finally named her "Kitty", because a year later I realized she was staying...smiles. She is still here 5 years later, and if I go away for more than 2 days she meows furiously when I come home... I love her now, but I only have her because she was such a pitiful little thing I could not turn her away.

There are Kittys all over this country.

But Julia, if we only allowed people to adopt children from this country all the swank Birkenstock wearing lefties wouldn't be able to have their fashionable "Refugee Babies" that they can show off in public!
You know, the ones in the supermarket checkout line that feel the "need" to let EVERYONE within shouting distance know that "MY TWINS ARE FROM THAILAND!!!"
Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of kids in this country grow up in state homes or foster care.
That actually happened to me in a supermarket in N.H.
I said to the lady; "Gee, they look just like you!"

I am a Birkenstock  wearing tree hugger and I never said we should only adopt American babies.. a baby is a baby, and American baby is no more valuable than any other baby

I think we should.
Why have foreign adoptions when so many kids in this country need to be adopted?
Look at Bolivia, "60 minutes" called it "a baby factory for the wealthy."

Speak to the powers that be in your government.
One of the reasons US citizens go to foreign countries to adopt is the lack of red tape and expense. I have had friends that got so frustrated at the system here in the US that they felt almost forced to go out of the country to adopt.

Opinion taken and understood.  For me I would prefer to  bring both. My two * causes*  if you want to call it that is animal welfare and anti slavery. Both of the * causes * save lives. For me, and just for me, one does not have to be at the exclusion of the other.

From my POV, these critters that are coming over will have no impact on the  millions we are euthanizing here at home.
Not one of them would be saved, if this project were aborted or never to happen. 99.9% of the animals being euthanized are a direct result of irresponsible pet owners or the * cute * little animal helpers who let the stray cats stay in their yard without nuetering them, and as they re produce they keep those critters too.. and the next generation and so on.

I wasn't familiar with Best Friends in Utah, so I Googled them. This project has been funded soley thru donations from people who want to donate to this specific cause, so it is not being taken out of the general fund. They will help the same amount of American animals as they always have.

I have to laugh at your stray kitty story, Julia. I  lost my 19 year old cat to cancer this past spring, a few days later a stray showed up at my door. Being they way I am... I believe God sent me this cat to care for, because my 19 year old also showed up at my door in a similar fashion. I immediately fell in love with her, tested her for contagiouys diseases < I have another cat also> had her vetted out and brought her inside to live a life of luxury. The ungrateful wench is a beast. She is mean, she growls, she is horrible to my other cat and I really don't like her much. lol. I have tried to find another home for her, tried to put her in a No Kill shelter to no avail..  My conscience does not allow me to put a healthy animal to sleep, so I am stuck with the wench !!! lol
Hopefully one day she will realize this is home and she will like it and fall in love with us, like you did with Kitty.
Kind of the reverse of your story.
