Archer -> Who would you rather have as the most powerful nation? (9/26/2006 12:16:48 PM)

A basic question based on the fact that so many people seem to begrudge the US it's power possition, and are activly seeking to change it.

If you make the US less powerful, then by default someone else becomes the new "Most Powerful Nation". Who would you propose that replacement be?

Canada, they are just kinder and gentler than most others, although Norway is pretty kind too.

Israel, so they could start paying us back all the money they owe us and to get the Arab "world" absolutely enflamed! lol

if another nation can knock us off the block- then perhaps we deserve it.

we could very well be the last generation that lives well.

so im in no hurry to concede that.

however- when power currupts from with in, multinational corporations have more pull then people, plunder the treasury, change rules - he who has the gold makes the rules.
the elephant in the room is China.

clinton goofed when he granted them most favored nation status.

bush leaves a sour taste in my mouth. eveyrone must follow rules except for the elite. the next president has to be someone very dynamic.

life as a chinaman wont be any better...i guarantee you that.

the equalizer thats the "other" superpower is China. shhh! we will act like nothings wrong...

LOL well some suggestions are rather entertaining as a lark. Feel free to continue with the funnies as well as adding to the serious nominations for who you would rather see in the possition.

China better grab while it's able.... the more I look, the less I fear them becoming a super-power for long. They're going to slam into the same wall we and western Europe are, a graying society; and they have plenty of problems right now, so, I'm not ready to pass the baton to them just yet.

Power coorupts, and it in goverment does so absolutly, it is evident in all rulerships based upon nationstates.. it has always been one corrupt ruler against the other.. sadly give a man a sword, a hammer, a bow a M16 or a Nuke and they become a madman. Give nation Hegonomy and it eats the others for lunch..  We need somethign other.. will we get it.. perhaps.. the world is getting hotter by the day so perhaps when the last vapors of water leave this brown globe peace will come.. peace at last..

Brazil is the country to watch from what my geography professor said.. natural resources, human resources and enough hydroelectricity to power megacities

Maybe so, julia. I was fairly impressed with their president as well, 60 Minutes did a piece on him a couple of years ago. He seemed to be very bright, with a determination to work with everyone in his country.

I could name more I would rather not have and the No.1 I would not have is Switzerland and that is no joke. If ever a country would need nuking if it was powerful is Switzerland. It would bourgeois us all to death! Hmm so would Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Would Canada bourgeios us to death too?  The problem is, the most powerful nation needs to be culturally exciting and the most culturally exciting places need to be built on shit, which excludes France and Germany which both can be culturally exciting places.

The world could do worse than South Africa. Assuming it was the most powerful nation on earth, it would be a lot more peaceful than it is now. It is multi-cultural and multi-racial so it would be a good candidate.

toservez -> RE: Who would you rather have as the most powerful nation? (9/26/2006 1:09:44 PM)

China is tricky because of their size. they are older but the big problem down the line with them is there child policy screwed up their demographics and have way too many boys to girls and when they become adults history shows us this is a very dangerous scenario. Many people feel this is one of the big problems in the Middle East for example.

Back to OP. It is not that we want U.S. to be less powerful, it is that we are squandering our power and creating ill will. We simply are not bigger then the rest of the world combine and despite all of our tough talk that comes from the White House and Fox news, we do need allies in order to be powerful.

WyrdRich -> RE: Who would you rather have as the most powerful nation? (9/26/2006 1:12:24 PM)

The one that stands for freedom in how individuals live their lives.  The one that strives toward equal treatment under the law for women and minorities.  The one where you can say anything, to anybody without some random mullah imposing the death penalty on you.

Basically, I'm on the side that doesn't want to drag people like me off and behead us.

Now lets throw another varable into the mix would the EU make a better most powerful nation/ entity? Or would their in fighting kill it off.

Brazil is certainly the up and comming nation in South America, and they will certainly be a National Power when they decide to do so.

Most of Europe alone would be too reminicent of the past 3 centuries. China is certainly the most likely to ake the slot should the US decide to let it pass to someone else.

Excellent point on the male/female ratio, Lin. I wonder if that might be the test that the authoritarian Chinese goverment fails?

By the way, you have a nicely written profile, nice to see specifics stated without shrillness.

Archer -> RE: Who would you rather have as the most powerful nation? (9/26/2006 1:17:57 PM)

I disagree simply based on the polls taken internationally in which the world opinion was that the US needs to be less powerful. (which by default makes someone else more powerful.)

I also submit the Kyoto Accords as proof that the World seems to want the US to be less economicly powerful, since they wish to force reductions of emmissions in such a short time that it would seriously reduce our GNP in order to match the levels.

Now granted if we took our marching orders from world opinion then they might not wish we were less powerful, but wouldn't we actually be less powerful if we were taking orders from world opinion?

Archer, I think the EU could do a good job (not necessarily better), but as you alluded to, the in-fighting there could bring it all down. I'm not sure there will be an EU in a couple of decades.

They already are possibly.  I wonder what their national debt is like.

As to the OP's question, I'm fine with US being the superpower if we can get back to the quest for enfranchisement of all/democracy, and as long as we don't continue on the corrupt empire path.   M

A nation must choose ... be popular, or be powerful.
