...and his whole family at the olympics, Dad wearing a union flag waistcoat......i remember thinking at the time, how many racist old bastards just had a heartattack watching that.....still makes me smile :)

Status: offline 		I went thru that. i was told in the 80s to take down my flag. it was just a rental.

some block get so petty as to that everyone cuts their grass teh same day. i cant say i enjoy the junk yard look....

i love the neighborhood im in now. i live among the retired- they make great nieghbors.  god knows ive been "reported" for infractions. .....but on the flip side when trouble comes to town. i can always stay out of it as mrs s, and mrs w, will take care of it. it is rather funny. we have an unwritted rule that if you live on this block- you go by these ideals/rules. the town also has a snotty reputation. being that they know my charactor- the police wont be at my door if i have a clunker ready to go bye byes... as the nieghbors know i wont let it go undone.  thats rather nice. the last town i lived in- i was constantly being told about my vehicles.

after living in loud noisey neighborhhoods- and how one house can bring down a block- i have relitives in teh country- have to put up with burning. i hate that. we dont burn trash here. we dont play loud radios here- and the noise curphew is noted. we dont turn the street into gasoline alley.  if you stay up all night- fine- just dont rattle the block,. this includes ALL GUESTS!!!

BTW- the flag incident was back in teh 80s- a suburb of chicago- i lived next door to that suburbs mayors mom. what a dive thast was in the end. i was so glad to be out of that snake pit!

the issue was someone could trip on the flag pole. which i suppose they could have. as an adult- i would re-read my lease. i was a kid then.
i think i took it donw put it up took it down type of thing. LOL. i was a BADD muthafckkrr when i was 20ish!!!  ;->

Retired folks are great if you are quiet and can move into neighborhood with a large concentration of them.

Yuppies on the other hand....will litigate a cockroach if they think it will erode one penny of the dollar value in their homes.

My sister was recently repermanided by the codes and covenant yuppies for installing a basketball rim above her garage. They told her that her children should go down to the park if they wanna shoot hoops.

Status: offline 		As others have said, there are neighborhoods with covenants, and they are hugely in place to protect the property values, be informed and know what you can/can't do.  The covenants in my neighborhood are not strictly enforced.  But I can live without a shed in my yard, so it's not an issue for me.

Status: offline 		We moved into a rented property on an exclusive !!!! suburban development ........we have the only washing line on the whole development, and when someone dropped hints about cutting the lawn I told them that in the interests of water conservation I had turned the sprinkler system off and that in the UK we let the lawns go brown in the winter....  : ).........sometime Americans take the British sense of humour too seriously, ..............he hasn't spoken to me since.

Its a good question - but when you look at some places over here (UK) it starts making more sense.

The protection of freedom is important, but we need regulations to prevent the freedom to blight a street or neighbourhood, thats for sure.

But still, some of the regulations coming out here do seem a little trivial. Some of these people who have a problem with flagpoles and the height of lawns and hedges should spend a month or so living on "sink" estates in England. A while living in a street with broken down fences, the old sofas in the front yards that have been there so long the grass has grown through them, and the proverbial burnt out cars on the drives would maybe give them some perspective!

Status: offline 		I guess bourgeois attitudes are everywhere which is why I can think of no better place to live than in an inner city immigrtant area. I vist a friend regularly who lives in a pretty bourgeois area of San Fransico and the first time I visited him I realised why he no longer makes art, the area is suffocating. It is one of the reasons I think if Switzerland was nuked, the world wouldn't miss it. Bourgeois attitudes drain the will to live by slow suffocation. Give me Hicksville and dismantled cars outside houses anyday of the week.

Status: offline 		I moved from an area that did not have an HOA to one that did because I had a neighbor that decided that having utility trailers in their front yard and 7 f*cking vehicles parked in the cul-de-sack, year round Christmas lights and numerous animals including a pig in his backyard that was destroying my property value, was acceptable.  (We had moved there 5 years prior to this joker)
 
Now if people raise the lower the flag  as is protocol, I have no problem with it. If they leave it out day and night and don't replace it when it becomes tattered and torn, you bet I'll squawk.
 
Actually, I think this is another Bush ploy to divide those who are for the war and against it, further apart.  He can pay my f*cking HOA fee every month then.

I have to really disagree. The importance of environment to the health and happiness of the people is not obvious perhaps, but is there. I'm sure there have been psychological studies on this in relation to architecture at least, which show marked differences in psychological well being between those living in concrete jungles and those living in a town such as Cheltenham where the town has not suffered from the concrete blight of the 50s and 60s and the people are healthier and happier.

This could of course relate to the draw and consequent property prices in a town like Cheltenham, bringing in people already happy and healthy because of their relative earning capacity. Having lived in Cheltenham for a short time though, it is by no means the case that everyone there fits into the upper middle class bracket.

Environment influences us in the way we develop, think and act. Every totalitarian ruler knows that, which is why they tend to build overwhelming structures in their cities.

If we didnt have rules to govern what people may and may not do, then we all could end up living in squalor, and that would not be a good thing.

Still, some of the rules mentioned here do seem very trivial indeed, and tasteful variety is a good thing.

..agreed, but thats not exactly what i meant by a little randomness and scruffiness. Both are relative terms, basically the real danger is uniformity, which helps to create levels of environmental stress that are uncomfortable.

British city centres were gutted and replaced with cheap architecturally impoverished concrete monstrocities in the 60s and in need of being bulldozed and renewed less than 50 years later. Travel around Europe as I am sure you have and you will see that British cities on the whole are the worst in western Europe. Architects and city planners designed squalor into their buildings in the 60s and moved most of the people out of the centre of the cities, creating urban wastelands.

I live in a city where old houses have been renovated and soundproofed to such a high standard if a bomb went off next door I would have trouble hearing it. I live about 5 minute walk from the city centre and if I go outside and the road is busy until around 3.00am in the morning. It is vibrant and friendly and people do repair their cars at the side of the road and play load music. I have never lived in such a cosmopolitan and democratic area. It all comes down to the build quality of homes. I can't imagine why people want to live in Stepford but getting to your point, I can imagine why politicians want them to. It breeds conformity and fear of people being different and politicians rely on fear for their policies.

Getting back on topic. During the World Cup, I counted 19 different national flags hanging outside houses, including one stars and stripes. There was no trouble at all, just light hearted rivalry and jokes about national stereotypes. Shutting oneself away in surburban utopias is like living on the moon. I've been there and would never go back.

Agreed. Uniformity is boring and provides a lack of stimuli which might well be compared by its effect with the effect of a poor environment. The "little boxes on the hillside" estates that are springing up everywhere in the UK are just as much a blight as the squalor of some sink estates.

But scruffiness and randomness being relative terms - what I think is OK might be awful for you for instance - how do we measure and regulate this in an objective way other than by recourse to absolutes in either direction? Even a majority view polled from all residents would not suffice here, as what constitutes unacceptability would then be determined by people who prefer to live in abject squalor or insist on an unattainable standard.

Where I live is an absolute shithole, but property prices here - even for a less stinky shithole - are astronomic, and so I am stuck where I am, surrounded by people whose combined IQs wouldnt add up to more than my monthly salary nett of the tax I pay to keep them housed, fed and clothed. They are quite happy to live in the sort of squalor to which they are accustomed, but I am not. I could take action of course - and get a brick through the window for my troubles. Why am I here? Divorce, plain and simple. What a great neighbourhood - my eleven year old son is too scared of drunks, druggies and assorted criminals to go to the shops.

Now to backpedal a little - I have noticed one thing about sink estates. The local council will spend millions on upgrading the houses and clearing the gardens and making these places nice. But the people who live there dont like it - it took less than a year for one street to revert to what it had been. The quality of environment is important, but in the end it is the people who often determine how that environment is changed to suit them. If they're no brain, no hope losers then they will change their surroundings to suit their mindset, and if theyre aspiring professionals they will do the same.

I'd much prefer to live with the ridiculously trivial regulations of a yuppie estate, than in the uncontrolled shithole I do. But then, its me that is out of step with my neighbourhood, so I am in the wrong.

Status: offline 		I'm always on the look out for a friendly roomie. The more perverted the better.  For what I paid for my studio and appartment I'd be lucky to be able to buy a tent in London, I couldn't even get anything as good in Sheffield so close to the city centre for three time the price.

My first home when married was on a brand new small council estate, well designed and good build quality houses. It took two anti-social families to destroy the whole environment and 25 years later the estate as been demolished. It wasn't their non-conformity that did it but their anti-social and criminal behaviour and the willingness of the council and police to protect them. Ever since that experience I have been dead against councils having anything to do with housing, they saw people like me who were willing to do something about a problem as the problem itself. The council workers were used to stonewall complaints and protect council officials and councillors. It seriously dented my leftwing visions and people spouting core socialist  values. (Yep its a dig NG)

hey Ranger, that would irk the heck out of me.

one has to have a sense of balance. we have some areas here further in, that people set out old appliances and funriture- and it sits for years.

yet the mob mentality can go too far. an uncle owned this place years ago- he felt he could not have a beer in his own yard. 

i had a neighbor next door with a basketball hoop. i yelled at the kids for a midnight basketball game. their dad was mad- i explained...i dont mind if they play basketball- just not when im sleeping right outside my window. that diffused the snafu. when the tenants change thier i must let the new ones know DONT PARK ME IN.  sure i can drive on thier grass to get out....but i never have, and dont want a bill for ruts on their sod.

easements are another fun thing. i learned no matter how big the lot- ppl still get tense over that.  we made the next door neighbor go by the book when she wanted a fence. she got her fence. the code guy went to school with mom.  hmm- yay- so did i vote for the code guy? you betcha i did.

gosh then thier is the time i told city hall i would sue them for piling snow blocking my car in.  after i explained it correctly- they sent a crew taht hour to fix thier mistake. it never happened again.

if you really want to piss me off. take my parking space...........................................  lol

Status: offline 		I wouldn't object to it if it were my neighbor, but I would privately conclude that the homeowner is probably a jackass.  In fact, I have a neighbor with a regular fucking flagpole in his front yard.  Must be 20 feet high.  Like this is fucking Fort Dix or something.

I also really hate it when realtors leave little nylon or plastic U.S. flags--complete with their contact information and bouncy upbeat selling points on a card impaled on the shaft--stuck into your soil on Veteran's Day and Memorial Day.

And if there were a relevant clause in the condo bylaws, then the condo association is legally required to enforce it.  If the homeowner doesn't like it, he can either campaign to have the bylaws changed, or move someplace else.

Except when you attempt to sale the home next door to the trash lot.  I'd rather have a few rules and nice property value over junk nex door.
