txsubbie -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (9/28/2006 10:07:29 AM)

When I was trying to think of a name for my lil one, I made sure I went through each of the names I liked and rhymed every bad word I could think of with that name. LOL Kids are mean these days so I tried to cut out any names they might have called my munchkin just on the basis of her name. Trendy names aren't good either as they do 'date' the kiddo and cutesy names are fine as long as the kids stay young and cute. Apple? What the hell was Gwynneth thinking?? Can you imagine calling an adult Apple? lol OK rant over... Best of luck to the Mom and Dad to be!

I don't think Adrian is girly; I like it a lot better than Dillon or Ian.

Some traditional ones...

Steven
Jeremy
Luke (or Lucas)

Some not so traditional...

Braedyn
Tristan
Keeran
Gareth

Good Luck!

The way we did it was buy a baby book and we each wrote out a list of names that appealed to us. Then we put up on the fridge a list of the 15 or so names that were common to both lists. After that, we could cross off a name if we decided we didn't like it. We were down to the last two when driving to the hospital and he then said he didn't like Joshua so much, so by default we had one left. No arguments, the only choices were liked by both. We were both fine with the name picked.

Funny things can happen when naming a child.  My second had a middle name before we agreed on a first name.  He likes that story.

i so could not come up with a name for a girl while i was pregnant with my 3rd child, i had plenty of boys names but not one girl name.... very later in my pregnancy i was fat, hormonal, fed up, hot in the summer heat and nearly threw the book thru the window... THEN.. out of sheer frustration, i picked up the book flicked thru the pages and stopped on one and picked the top name on the left hand page..... Hope... i had agirl and thats whats shes called.... I've got an unusual first name and I think that may have contributed to setting me apart from other kids and therefore I'm self-reliant because of it. Just a theory, YMMV.

So I'd suggest something unique and kind of historical so the kid can identify with a great leader such as:

Alexander (the Great)
Winston
Rex (not a person, but the latin word for king sounds tough and he can say it is after a tyrannosaur)
Hannibal (after the original, not  Lecter)
Alaric (and if he doesn't like it he can have everyone call him Ric)
Julius
Attila

but I'd avoid some other names such as:
Nero
Caligula
Stalin
Saddam

Anyway, you get the idea. Good luck!

Celtic names seem to be all the rage these days.  I think we should consider Vercingetorix.

Zachary is pretty played out too.  My son is a Zachariah and by just yelling "Zack" at a playground you get 10 boys looking for their mom.  Something to think about with common names if you ever need to yell for your kid in a hurry.

Aileen68 -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (9/28/2006 3:55:31 PM)

Augustus Gloop

Lordandmaster -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (10/9/2006 10:03:35 AM)

Oh, and I forgot to mention another pet peeve: no names after places, especially not places in Texas!  No Dallas, no Austin, no Houston.  You wouldn't name your kid Yonkers or Dubuque, would you?

Aileen68 -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (10/9/2006 12:15:03 PM)

I named my daughter Schenectady.  Was that wrong of me to do that?

Well I had a school buddy = last name Webb; and he named his firstborn - a boy - Spider............

Lordandmaster -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (10/9/2006 2:17:55 PM)

I went to school with a guy named Richard Burns.

justheather -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (10/9/2006 2:18:19 PM)

Okay I was saving this one for myself, but it does not appear to be the case that Im going to be using it, so, Im going to share with you the-name-I-wish-I-had-named-my-own-son...

Ready?

Fox.

I know, I know, two thirds of you are going to hate it but I think it's really cool, strong, succinct, and different, but not so different that people have to ask you how to spell it.

PeterJay -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (10/9/2006 2:26:32 PM)

Dick Burns? I know him.

I had a teacher named Richard Bader, and when you are a small boy you are a master and not a mister so his name was......

Adrian has asked me to point out that neither he nor his name is in any way girly. He would also like to invite anyone who wishes to disagree with this statement, to a contest of manliness, consisting of a vast amount of drinking, accompanied by very loud talking peppered with various expletives, followed by a fist fight in the street. The very mark of being a well rounded, well adjusted man, of course, being the capacity to win in all three rounds.

Now, if that hasnt put you off using the name Adrian, I'm not sure what will. The admittedly minute chance of some functional correlation between a name and how someone turns out, is still too large for anyone to take the risk.

Richard is a great name for a boy. Its strong, and also has sufficient variants to allow for the whims of adolescence (eg Rick, Rich). As a bonus, variants like (p)Rick and Dick, will provide the opportunity for your boy to assert himself against namecallers, without them being able to call him something worse, what with kids being deviously inventive at such derivations.

If you child is a girl however, Richard is not a good choice.

Not to mention the whim of Dick.

Dick was mentioned further on.

Honestly, what is it with people here? All they ever think of is Dick! LOL!
