For a boy, "Black Jack." After Black Jack Pershing.
He was called "Black Jack" because many of the soldiers in his Division were "buffalo soldiers." Not because he used a blackjack.
Yes, Celtic names are always cool too.

Okay I was saving this one for myself, but it does not appear to be the case that Im going to be using it, so, Im going to share with you the-name-I-wish-I-had-named-my-own-son...

Ready?

Fox.

I know, I know, two thirds of you are going to hate it but I think it's really cool, strong, succinct, and different, but not so different that people have to ask you how to spell it.

You can't name em after an animal.  Then, before you knew it,  we'd have a whole bunch of Beavers running around.

We already do...named Aileen, Julia, Jennie, etc....

But I digress...

I like Ross but it doesn't flow with Rory imo.

How about Kevin, Sam or Shane?

Oumae

P.S.  Aileen is the correct spelling ( Eileen is a different name) but where did you lot across there get your strange spelling of Séan?  Shaun and Shawn just look strange.

LaM:  Dick Burns?  That belongs in the herpes thread!

I knew a family growing up named "Tree" and the kids were named(I am not making this up):

Jack Pine Tree
Douglas Fir Tree
and
Mary Christmas Tree

I've never known a better justification for parricide.

I wanted to name my first born son Timothy.  I liked the name.  I thought "Tim" was a great boy's nickname.  Then My wife, a converted Christian, told Me who Timothy WAS (hey, I grew up reading only the FIRST bible, not that "second" text.)  Not a name for a nice Jewish boy.

Consider that you don't know your son's ultimate sexual preference or career.  Avoid names that will sound like a bad gay porn star:  I have actually known one of each of a:  Rock Marble, Richard (Dick) Granite, and Dick Hardway.

As for place names, we once ran into a girl who told us "My name is Sunflower, because my mother told me I was conceived in a field of beautiful sunflowers."  All I could think of was "Man, my name would have been '54 Bonneville..."

I knew that, but how else could I tease her about her name AND quote Dexy's Midnight Runners?

And you should know we Americans do HORRIBLE things with Celtic names.  Shaun.  LaShaun?  Shevaun.  Katelynn, Catelinn, Katylynne (all for Caitlin, one of my favorite Gaelic names).  And we also named our dogs (Wolfhounds, granted) Fallon, Rory, Bree and Brenna.  All lovely names, but when they became popular for little kids I felt weird calling "RORY!"  and getting one 8 year old Irish Wolfhound and four 3-6 year old little boys.

Aileen68 -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (10/9/2006 3:12:54 PM)

Anybody say Harry yet?

Lordandmaster -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (10/9/2006 3:34:29 PM)

My quick onomastic research tells me that Eileen, Aileen, Eibhlín, Evelyn, and Helen are all the same name.  Is that wrong?

And "Shaun" and "Shawn" arise from the fact that we don't know how to pronounce "Séan."

justheather -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (10/9/2006 3:40:24 PM)

I went to elementary school with a Sean and we pronounced it just fine.
Had I been blessed with a Y chromosome, my name would have been Seamus.

PS Nobody mispronounces the word Fox!

Aileen68 -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (10/9/2006 3:50:12 PM)

I was actually supposed to be named Aileen...right up until the time I was born.  At the last minute it was changed to A*****a.  A much more traditional Italian name.  I think my dad could invision my grandma chasing him with the sauce spoon if they didn't pick something Italian.

kisshou -> RE: baby update- name suggestions ? (10/9/2006 4:04:01 PM)
