Originally, when this sort of thing was more regimented (or less watered-down as has been the phrase du jour lately), there was the Old Guard and European styles of BDSM. You had to go through certain stages to attain certain titles. I started shortly after that, so I can't point to 'that'. I think it is how you referred to it, 'when others see you that way'. And no, having one's companion deem you All Great Somethingorother doesn't really cut it. For me, it was when I was recognized in my community as a leader of sorts, or someone they wanted to involve in 'their' play. You can call yourself whatever you want, it amounts to 'not much'. But when others think of you in a certain way, you can at least make reference of that to others (no matter how you feel about yourself). Jeff
