I would consider myself worldly, even though I can honestly say I've never been to greece, or athens, or egypt, or china. I know in other parts of the world nudity iis NOT considered to be against any laws. Public intimacy, perhaps, not nudity. So here many of us sit, in the "new world," discussing ethical decisions made by others, concerning the morals and values of others, in support of, or in digust of a sculpture which is molded in a nude pose. Who are we, to stand judgement over what most of the rest of the world already knows? ahh yes.... because this country was founded on judeo-christian beliefs, and thus, nudity leads to thoughts of sin... and thoughts of sin lead to sin, thus a=b, and b=c, then a=c. I wonder why those same judeo-chrisian beliefs do not question the bible as infallible, using the same theorom, but then, that's right.... we're not supposed to discuss religion and politics in chat forums, because of the variety of perspectives involved. With that said, all I will say in defense of the teacher involved... as each and every one of you know, as I do, media will exploit any angle to sell more newspapers. The teacher could have been a senile old bird who didn't believe in lesson plans, taught one way, and was unwilling to join the 21st century. Th teacher could have messed around with the superintendants wife, or husband, or son/daughter for that matter... these are all hypotheticals, but instead of publically announcing the reason why tenure was denied, or dismissal was warranted, the school system decided to keep it discreet. Short of actually being there, and knowing the truth behind the story, we'll never know why... CC

I already expressed that in this thread, and I think that it is stupid. There is no reason to fear that which is natural. Heh, My parents sit on the religious right side of the fence. They are strong Bush supporters (and they live in Florida..lol. Go figure). I get into heated discussions with them some times, particularly when My mother bashes My politics and belief system which is very much different from her own.

Count me amongst those who can’t understand why the same people who would let their children watch graphic violence in the movies and on television (and in video games!) will raise such a ruckus over something as natural and beautiful as the human body. I work in a building with two art galleries and twenty artist studios so this is an issue that hits home to me. One of our artists paints very beautiful nudes and the vast majority of patrons have no problem with it, even if they have their children with them. Indeed, many use it as an opportunity to discuss the human body, the difference between art and pornography, etc. with them. Once in a while we’ll get someone who will be upset about it. They’ll say something like "you should have warned us." IT’S AN ART GALLERY FOR CRIPES SAKE, WHAT DO THEY EXPECT?! Once in a great while we’ll get a religious nutcase who will really freak out! We’ll get the "you’re demeaning women" speech or the "you’re going to hell speech," to which I’ll respond with something like, "really? I think God would be rather pleased that his most beautiful creations is being honored and appreciated in this way." One of the nude paintings is of my twenty year old niece when she was five months pregnant. I don’t have the slightest qualms about looking at it – it is a really beautiful painting. A middle age woman who had that evangelical look about her (meticulously dressed, perfect teeth, etc. – think Maud Flanders from the Simpsons) had a problem with it, though. She proclaimed it to be pornography and said that any woman who would allow herself to be so depicted was no better than a prostitute and wondered what kind of a mother she would make. I hardened my expression and said tersely, "that’s my niece." She looked at me with an expression of sheer horror, as if she had walked into a house of devils. Then she ran – literally ran! – out of the building. We never saw or heard from her again. I'm okay with that.
