C'mon, Erin - you know better than what is in the misleading subject line. Do you use trans fats at home? Are they necessary? A good cook can cook without fake fats.

BTW, there has been a thread about this already:

If I recall correctly, McDonalds and such up here have already eliminated trans fats, so I do not see what the big deal is.  It is entirely possible to cook without them.  McDonald's food was always gross, but it is not any more gross now than it was.  They are still serving french fries.  Tim Hortons is peddling donuts just as much now as ever.

I really do not think a trans fat ban would be that big a deal.  Not to mention it will be healthier in the long run.

I agree.  Donuts and french fries aren't going to be illegal.  Needlessly unhealthy donuts and french fries are going to be illegal.

You'd have a point if there really were a decision to be made.  But how do you find out what trans fats are in the food you eat?  They're not listed anywhere--corporations lobbied the government to PREVENT the FDA from requiring trans-fat disclosure.  You can't exactly ask the dumass behind the Dunkin Donuts counter, "Hey, excuse me, but how many grams of trans fat are in that Boston Kreme?"

If it were possible for a consumer to know where the trans fats are and avoid them, then sure, I'd agree with you.  But states have had to assume this burden because the corrupt federal government has refused to do so.  It's a new trend.  You're seeing it right now in California with greenhouse-gas emissions, and it's only going to spread.  If the federal government can't do the job it's supposed to do, someone has to step to the plate.

You're welcome.

I do that all the time. To me it makes a cake moister and sweeter (not necessarily a positive), but it also increases dietary fiber and any other benefit you would normally get from fruit. Because it's sweeter, I leave off the icing. The moistness comes close to giving you that trans fat gooey factor.

Again I'll say , But they are not proposing a law saying "Resturants will post in their menu if a dish is prepared with Trans Fat."
A law that is reasonable and that does not remove choice from the consumer or the cook. They are proposing a law that says Thou Shalt Not Cook with Trans Fat. An over reaching that is not nessisary.

I'd support a notification in the menu law., I have trouble with an outright ban.
Oh and notifications must be of a minimal sizenone of this stuff

I agree with that, Archer, and it's what we'd have nationally if we didn't have Washington lobbyists and corrupt politicians who eat their bread.

The only thing I'll add is that the "give the people a choice" model doesn't work for ALL substances.  Would you feel the same way if the issue were cocaine and not trans fat?  Or a known carcinogen?  Maybe the problem is that people don't realize how dangerous and unnecessary trans fats are.

Doughnut prohibition. Hehe, kryspy creame speakeasies. Gods, this is actually amusing to me for some sick reason.

Half joking but really kinda find the idea of warn them and let natural selection handle the rest, to have some merit.
Of course it has some serious drawbacks but on a surface level it works for me.

Libertarian thought only works with good information and required notification, otherwise it falls into the trap of rabid capitalism.
Similar to my SM views Informed Consent has a standard of INFORMED. LOL

I attempted to ask some pimple faced teenager about the transfats in the oil at a deli I was attempting to buy fried chicken at. Her eyes glazed over, and she said "what's that?" .. at that point I was pretty sure that I should probably turn around and leave, which I did

Sorry but I can't take credit for the subject line really. It was the headline I found the story under in our local paper.

Hey Julia,

Ask for the Manager and see if they use a corn oil or a blended oil it's on the box that it comes in.

Use to work at Wal-Mart in the deli and we used Corn oil which was good and we changed it every other day.

I will accept that offer because I don't think I can live happily without butter or strawberry shortcake.     M
