I need some help on football legends. I need names of several people that were amazing in the NFL years ago. All ranges would be awesome. If anyone could help me on this, I'd be eternally greatful! ^.^ I love football, but as for players names, well, I have no idea.

No one mentioned Jim Brown?  Otto Graham?  Johnny Unitas?  George Blanda?  Bronko Nagurski?  Joe Montana?  Those are only the greatest players who ever lived...

On defense, I like Ray Nitschke and Dick Butkus.  Jack Lambert & Lawrence Taylor were pretty good too, weren't they?  Oh, and Alan Page.

Edited because I misspelled "Nitschke."

Gotta agree with ya on Brown and Unitas, LAM.. I thought the second poster said Montana, after I read back I saw it was Young.
This was a hard field to narrow down... Butkus is right up there too as one of the greats. Didn't the term Monsters of the Midway have some relationship to Butkus ?

Well, the Monsters of the Midway are the Bears, so yes, but usually that name refers to the teams from the early 40's, with Sid Luckman at QB--so that was before Butkus's time.

Here, these were the Monsters of the Midway:

NastyDaddy -> RE: Football help? (9/29/2006 3:08:03 PM)

Coach Vince Lombardi
Daryl Lamonica, Fred Bellitnikoff, Ben Davidson also of the old Raiders
Len Dawson of the Chiefs
Bills had OJ Simpson
Walter Peyton of the Bears
Franco Harris and the 'immaculate reception' for the Steelers
Fran Tarkenton for the Vikings
Roger Staubach, Walt Garrison for the Cowboys
Lawrence Taylor of the Giants
Bob Griese, Dan Marino of the Dolphins
John Elway, Don Meridith of the Broncos

There's so many greats out there...

hehe.  I think we should either thread jack this for the nfl thread or get one started.  We need to discuss stuff.  Or vent.  Or make fun of T.O.

T.O.......................*sighs and shakes head* Parcells says he's going to Tennesee with the team, but I doubt he'll play, Katy.

Hey, how 'bout those Bengals? [:-]

Did you enjoy watching us hand the game to them?  sheesh
I hope the bye week will cure the Steelers of what ails them.

look here:

one of my favorites is Chuck Bednarik -- I think he was the last one to play both offense and defense. Amongh other things, he is well known for clobbering Frank Gifford -- at the time some people wondered if he killed him.

Level -> RE: Football help? (9/29/2006 4:28:43 PM)

Hey, there isn't much wrong with the Steelers; give Big Ben a couple of weeks to build his stamina and strength back, then watch out. It pissed me off watching Shannon Sharpe bellowing about how he wasn't back yet, where was his arm strength, etc. Geez, give him a break, I say.

That was a good ball game, though.

Happy, Bednarik was indeed a force. I think he did play center as well.

And let's not forget Sam Huff. Those two, with Butkus, man.
