After reading the thread in general about halloween i just have to ask what is the big deal about halloween? I live in the U.K and we just don't really make much of it - what is it that you Americans go so nuts about?

And what's so big about Christmas?  Or New Years?

It's something we grew up with, something associated with fond memories, and an excuse to have fun.

Isn't that what every holiday is?

Yours,

benji

If you want to be scared over here, you just wait til November 5th and bangers dropping through your letterbox.

Bangers eh? Never heard of getting sausages by post.

Or did you mean - firecrackers?

In ye olde days in much of America, Halloween was the one day when cross dressers could legally go out in public. It's always been a special day for the kinky here.

As someone who floves halloween its....just.....so much well fun!! It's a stress free fun holiday for most people. You dress up, go to parties or take your kids out and troll for candy or stay at home and pass out candy and see the cool costumes without leaving the house.

The whole night is magical in a way. No matter what you are free and a kid again.

Me: I spend most of the night jumping out of coffins or off the ground making little kids scared and adults scared/amused.  I started having a haunted yard when I was 16 years old....so about ten years ago,,..now I get kids/teens that come by and say "You were always the coolest house around".  I like being apart of that memory.

Kat....who starts Halloween set up this Sunday!!

I love it for the costumes personally.

Technically it is a pagan/pagan-ish holiday...originated by the Celts.

Ok, I will explain to you the big deal, but you have to sit down first.
Are you sitting down?

Ok.

People give you chocolate.
For free.
And not just cheap crappy chocolate, either.
Ok, some give you cheap crappy chocolate.
But you also get real delicious good name-brand chocolate too.
All you can carry.

We don't celebrate May day in the US as they do in Europe... it would be a treat to see a maypole strung with ribbons wound up again.

And you can buy way more candy than you actually will give out so that you can eat what if left over.

Left over?

Usually in my house it all gets eaten BEFORE Halloween and we have to go out and buy more for the kids at the last minute!

I cant stand halloween.  I wont go to any costume parties, because I feel foolish to dress up that way.  but..its a pretty big thing around here.  My daughter and her friends really enjoy doing their costumes and make up and such.  Of course I answer the door and give out the good stuff and not those lame lollipops, but it's still a day that I like to be over with.  In my area all of these nuts decorate their homes and lawns like its christmas.....orange lights and scare crows, tombstones, bloody bodies and legs sticking out of lawns.  Its pure insanity.  Everyone gets into it and even alot of the adults dress up.  Craziness without a doubt.
