My favorite place to eat is a freinds restaurant in Phoenix, it is in the Biltmore fashion park shopping are and it is is called Christopher's Fermiere. Chris is the owner/Chef and he is very talented and a james Beard award winner. He also has a marvelous wine list to go with his french style bistro food.

For seafood in Tampa, FL,  I  *LOVE*  The Colonnade on Bayshore Blvd.  [sm=tongue.gif]

For authentic Spanish-Cuban food, I love La Teresita on Columbus Dr. in Tampa, FL.  [sm=tongue.gif]

LaTigresse -> RE: What's your favorite place to eat? (9/30/2006 3:46:47 PM)

I could never have just one but three immediately came to mind. Cafe Dodici, an amazing treasure of an italian restaurant in a small town here in Iowa, Givanni's in Iowa City, Pierre Antoines in New Orleans.

Edited to add.......I just remembered one more Williams Seafood Shack in Savannah GA

Positano Ristorante on Mulberry in Little Italy,  NYC.
They make the most incredible Spiedini.

My all-time favorite is Los Cuates in Albuquerque. Absolutely THE best New Mexican food! My second favorite, and the one I go to more often is Santino's, an Italian place in Ruidoso. I'm getting hungry just thinking about those places.

I come from a family of chefs, restauranteurs, consultants...foodies all.  Growing up, I think I can recall MAYBE 10 dinners eaten at home.  My brother and I learned percentages at age 4, calculating tips.  So "where do we eat" is not a lightly undertaken question.

What type of food?  what are we in the mood for?  what do we have time/money for?  Do we want adventure, or comfort food?

Overall favorite:  Wishbone, in Chicago.  I don't know that I've ever had a bad meal.

Chain?  I won't eat at most "midpriced" chain resturants.  Put me down in a new city, give me a web link or a phone book, and I can usually find something better than that.  But Olive Garden is amazingly consistent.  If I'm in a place with real Italian food, I'll drive on by.  But give me an Olive Garden over faked Italian, any time.  And Ruby Tuesdays, for salad bar and burgers, is also reliable.  There is hardly another chain resturant I'll willingly go into.

Memorable restaurant meals?

Mansion at Turtle Creek, Dallas $$$$$! but incredible
Almost anything at Karl Ratsch's, Milwaukee
Breakfast at the Loveless Cafe, Nashville
Lady and Sons, Savannah
Monell's, Nashville
(Yes, I'm a sucker for Southern food)
Tapas at Cafe Babareeba, Chicago - when the waitstaff took our then 4 year old, too precious daughter to the kitchen for an hour, made her a little princess outfit out of napkins and served her fried bananas.
Commander's Palace, outdoors in early spring (New Orleans)
Vetri, Philadelphia, this past June with my baby girl.
Hatsuhana, my 25th birthday, first time I ever ate sushi, with my other baby girl
The Palm, my 40th birthday with family and friends, split whole lobsters and perfect steak
Dozens of meals at Pandls, in Bayside, WI, probably the best all around American resturant I've ever been to.

oh man, I'm hungry now...Lets EAT!

E.

Ah yes La Tigress I love Pierre Antoines as well as William's Seafood shack in Savannah, we would drive up there when we lived in Brunswick GA. And Le Mis
you are right about La Teresita, it is the best for spanish/Cuban food.  When I worked at Disney we would drive over to Tampa just to eat dinner there. Then Gloria Estafan opened her Cuban food restaurant at Downtown Disney so we tried it and the food was awful, needless to say we started going back to La Teresitas.

SweetSarijane -> RE: What's your favorite place to eat? (9/30/2006 6:33:33 PM)

Applebees
Olive Garden
Lone Star Steakhouse
Burger King
Sonic

Someone mentioned Texas Roadhouse, it's a good place to eat, and I like that you're able to throw the peanut shells on the floor.

lauren0221 -> RE: What's your favorite place to eat? (9/30/2006 6:55:28 PM)

I was just in Portland, and both Mio Sushi, and Saburo (also sushi of course) were my new favorite restaurants.

I don't think I have been to a restaurant in New Orleans that did not have incredibly good food.

Mondo's in Iowa City has really good sandwiches on homemade bread.

LeMis -> RE: What's your favorite place to eat? (9/30/2006 7:57:57 PM)

P.S.  I like Sonic's Route 66 Diet Dr. Pepper w/ strawberry, mmmmm

CreoleCook -> RE: What's your favorite place to eat? (9/30/2006 10:27:13 PM)

I've lived in tampa, florida, a year so far, and have yet to find "real" anything... even though every othewr restaurant bvoasts "authentic" this, and "authentic" that.  So I have to refer to restaurants thatr were back home, although I'm not sure if they still exist, post Hurricane Katrina...

The Absolute best Po'Boys, hands down: Pirate's Cove, in Pass Christian, MS.  Grab yo'self  a fresh ice cold Barq's in a bottle, grab you a seat, and prepare yo'self for the best on dat coastline...(thats pronounced Kris-chan, for all you damned yankees out there...)

Shrimp Jambalaya, Crawfish Etoufee', and other creole foods: A little hole in the wall restaurant down in Slidell, Louisiana, name a "Mudbugs."  The paint's a peelin off dem walls, der's more Saint's memorabilia than in dat Dome, but don't let dat distract you... people come from Metarie (pronounced Met-tree for dem same damned yankees out cher...) to come eat.

Yet if you are feeling a bit more formal, make reservations now, for Commander's Palace, in downtown New Orleans, Louisiana.  Some of the best in the country go there to train (ie: Emeril.)
While working there, the man that pretty much put Redfish on the endangered species list by himself, Paul Prudhomme,(blackened redfish was his signature dish) helped to establish the five star rating it maintains even today.

By the way, if yer feelin a lil cafe and benigets (pronounced ben-yay's) make your way down to dat Quarter (the r is silent) for Cafe Du Monde.

Hemingway's, followed closely by Spain, both fairly nice restaurants where price matches quality of food and service.  M

Creole cook,

Ah now you are talkin' the best damn beignets in the country Cafe Du Monde, your making me hungry for them, gonna have to plan a trip to "Na'leans" real soon now.

UtopianRanger -> RE: What's your favorite place to eat? (10/1/2006 12:38:21 AM)

I don't eat at the chain places at all. If I'm gonna blow green to eat out {Which I do all the time }It's chef-owned with fresh ingredients. {and that doesn't equate to expensive}

And with the exception of the food being cold, I'm not a ''service'' snob like many I know are. The yuppie trait of having the salad fork replaced immediately by the wait staff is boring as hell. I'm easy-going laid back..... life's way too short to let a crapy / smug wait person ruin good food /good time.  However...if I get stuck eating with a snob when I didn't know it a head of time....I hang them with the check.

Italian :  I either like Cafe Mingo or Ciao Vito. With Vito...I highly recommend the razor clams any way he decides to dish them up that night. With Mingo....if they have ''bird'' as a selection, its a must.
http://ciaovito.net/

Steak :  I'll either do El Gaucho or Ringside - Both have excellent aged beef in a dark white loin cloth setting. Be prepared plunk down some green though, as both are spendy. I highly recommend Bananas Foster at either place for dessert. And El Gaucho has live music dinner side.

http://www.ringsidesteakhouse.com/

Thai Food : I like Typhoon - But it's not the best...only the most consistent and easiest to get to.
http://www.typhoonrestaurants.com/

Pan Asian / American :  Hands down - Loverly Hula Hands. Along with Mingo....prolly my favorite place to eat. The only problem - There's a hellified wait if you choose a weekend night. A very quaint romantic setting in a funky place with huge portions. www.lovelyhulahands.com

Pizza :
Classic thin-crust New York style pizza cooked in wood-fired brick oven at 800-900 degrees. - Stupendo! Only problem....don't get there a half-hour before they close, because they'll have already run outa dough.
http://www.apizzascholls.com/

French :  Fenouil - Great but fairly expensive if you like French faire - I took a good lady friend of mine { who I met off collarme} there and after she looked at the menu she asked me if we could go get a hamburger instead { She'd never been to a fancy French place before -and I didn't blame her } - I ordered the Ribeye for her and she told me it was the best steak she'd ever had.
