The list is false - not necessarily all of it, but at least some and probably much of it.

The one about the mask from "Halloween" is accurate.  Slightly different masks were used for later films, but in the first, it is William Shatner's face, made in white.

Since I read number 19 I decided to check and see if this was true.  And in al the casinos I have been to, not only were there no clocks, but none of the dealers wore watches either.  I guess if you realize how long your sitting there, they assume you wont spend as much or something.

Some I knew, some I didn't.  As for the veracity of the list, I am fairly certain that #27 (rule of thumb) is false.  The phrase actually comes from carpenters using their thumb to measure off (roughly) an inch.

I confess to being doubtful of the 7-up story.  It just has that urban myth feel to it.

Sorry to be a kill joy.

I don't know about the name 'Wendy' but I do know that the name 'Miranda' was coined by Shakespeare for his play "The Tempest."  it means to "hold in awe" or "to look upon in wonder."

A friend of mine ( a poetess) responded to this with the following:

LORD I DO LOVE A CHALLENGE

You are not the first to ask
More like the millionth
November isn't to bad
Ferbruary is the dreariest MONTH

I see you are a bit choked up by that last rhyme
Would you care for a throat lozenge
It's really quite good
It's supposed to taste like ORANGE

Ah but now you think
she will never find a rhyme for SILVER
I see the suspense is getting to you
the anticipation makes you quiver

Damn it! Just glanced in the mirror
And I have a fucking pimple
It's really gross
It's begining to turn PURPLE

4. A raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will
bounce up and down continuously from the bottom of the
glass to the top.

*** I tried this as a science experiment last year in class, it works, the raisins float up and down, I forget what liquid we used though (it wasn't alcohol but it might have been 7-UP or Sprite).

12. Orcas (killer whales) kill sharks by torpedoing up
into the shark's stomach from underneath, causing the
shark to explode.

*** I used to go to Sea World (in FL) quite often years ago, I seem to recall hearing about  this, maybe it's the dolphin instead of the Orca, not sure.

19. There are no clocks in Las Vegas gambling casinos.

*** We went out to Vegas this past March and couldn't find a clock, but we all wore watches or checked our cell phones for the time.

21. There are no words in the dictionary that rhyme
with: orange, purple, and silver!

*** "Sounds" true to me and my ears.  I just don't hear that arrange & strange sound like/rhyme w/ orange or that pimple, wimple, simple, dimple sound like/rhyme w/ purple but then maybe it's just me since I have a hearing problem or the way that I pronounce the words, lol.

The carpenters may use this as well now, but the original meaning was accurate in the list.  Centuries ago men were allowed to discipline their wives with switches or beat them with sticks, however, the diameter could be no larger than that of the husband's thumb.

edited to add that this was in my Domestic Law text book under Common Laws from England.

noticed arpig still has the d20 quote. give yourself +5 kudos!

The celery thing is true, but..... Using a traditional hand whisk, making a merangue using 3 egg whites and the appropriate amount of sugar is also negative calories. Better than raw celery!

Most of these are wrong.  Why do people keep sending around internet crap like this?  I'm really curious about the psychology of it.  It's related to the psychology of forwarding the latest dumass postage-stamp or do-not-call-list hoax that someone dropped into your inbox.

2. The Declaration of Independence was written on hemp

It may be true that hemp paper was a staple of fine publishing at the time, as far as I know all the important legal documents of massive import were written on parchment.  This includes the Declaration of Independence, according to the National Archives.
www.archives.gov/national-archives-experience/charters/treasure/declaration_facts.html
The 500 authorized copies that were distributed to carry the news to the colonies may have been hemp paper.  I didn't find any references to those as yet.

Good stuff for the inquiring minds among us, it seems!!  Got us thinking!!  This can be good.
