ORIGINAL: Daddysredhead quote:
ORIGINAL: Marc2b Some I knew, some I didn't. As for the veracity of the list, I am fairly certain that #27 (rule of thumb) is false. The phrase actually comes from carpenters using their thumb to measure off (roughly) an inch. The carpenters may use this as well now, but the original meaning was accurate in the list. Centuries ago men were allowed to discipline their wives with switches or beat them with sticks, however, the diameter could be no larger than that of the husband's thumb. edited to add that this was in my Domestic Law text book under Common Laws from England. In my defense: http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node=rule%20of%20thumb Also: http://www.word-detective.com/back-n.html http://womenshistory.about.com/od/mythsofwomenshistory/a/rule_of_thumb.htm I would also like to add, lest there be any misunderstanding, that I in no way advocate domestic abuse. I just believe in striving for accuracy, and for truth (we may not get there but we should always strive for it), even if we don't like where it leads. This is why I despise ideologies of any kind, they reject truth if it doesn't go along with the ideology.
