As an ex military wife I can understand his reasonings but there are legal ways of doing it other than going AWOL. He could have handled it the legal way.

He'd already served one tour in Iraq and they were goingto send him back? That tells me that the Army is short of soldiers. During Vietnam all you had to do was one 13 month tour.

We also had the draft during Vietnam, was given a lot less training and had a much larger Armed Forces. Was a whole bunch easier to replace a solder back then. The Military is a whole different world now.

There is a huge shortage and soldiers are spending 3 years over there. Not good. Doesn't do a whole lot for their morale.

Oh, I know the reasoning.. I really don't want to see people being killed for standing up for what they believe in... Even less do I want to see people killed for what they don't believe in... Still, I think if you sign up for the army, you should know what you get into, take responsiblility for your own actions and follow them to the end.. Seriousness aside, my initial mental image when i read the topic was some soldier doggypaddling in a vat of KY lube.. :) My second line was amusing in a BDSM context where it is frowned on subs who act up to get the spanking they want... :) Iskander...

Sad thing is is that armies these days are lowering their standards because they can't get 'good' people... Not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing... These people have to go through pysch visits when they come back because of what happens over there. Unless you have directly been involved in the military you have no idea what goes on and how wives and children of these soldiers see them when they come home. Joining the military doesn't mean walking around and looking cute in a uniform it means doing what they train you too. Which does mean weapons and killing of people. I saw my husbands personality change after Somalia, Bosnia and various other deployments. Divorce and domestic violence are the highest in military families. Its not because they aren't right its because of what they had to do and the civilian world puts them down for doing it.

Ick...it's morning to me and I've only had two sips of my coffee... Ok, so you've served in the military. But only one section of it. Generally, that's what most people do. They are limited to a smaller portion of the American armed forces (no matter what branch). So how can any of us say other than as strictly opinion that as a whole, they have lowered their standards? To me, seeing as they had the draft, as said above and a whole lot LESS training than what I understand is the training today...and I'm sure the methods themselves of the monitoring of the people in training have changed as well over the decades...I personally think that with the evidence presented to me, that when we had the draft in effect, that the standards were less then than they are now. They don't necessarily have to be more or less selective because less people are signing up every year as in the past. But since we aren't drafting every tom, dick and harry from anywhere we can get them.....I would say we are being more selective than in the past and that the standards were probably lower back during the draft.

There are a goodly number of people with limited education, ability, means and futures that look to the military as a last resort, as well as everyday people who joined up for making ends meet and got caught and actually had to go shoot it out. *****NB: There are also a number of people who are of exemplary everything that are in the military as well. I know some will take umbrage where no slight was intended and I wish to forestall that, because some of them folk could be regarded as my friends. The tom dick and harry thing.................. This is an untoward argument in my mind.... Random drawing should provide a standard bell curve of people. The fact that it is AllVol is going to kink the curve drastically.......it will slam the bell to one side or another of the curve, no longer random you see, but quite selective.........this circular argument should lead you back to Rhodes scholars. I see the point in random selection.....but how many of those people versus people that WANT to join end up being useful? Mentally, emotionally and of relative sound psyche? The boyfriend and I had a discussion late late last night regarding this point. And yes, he is military. I'm not trying to start a flame war, I am honestly curious about all this because it is something that I want to understand. But at the moment I'm almost late for work, so I gotta jet. I'll be back tonight.

Ahhh... Well I live in Aus, and recently it's been plastered all over the media, that due to not being able to get enough new recruits, the army is slacking off on requirements, overweight, no problem, we'll fix that, can't run 100 meters, we'll fix that, astma, no worries mate, we'll take you as a non-combatant... I can't say that the US army is the same, but the fact that the guy that this thread is about wasn't screened better, and that the US has a shortage of recruits makes me think that if they havn't dropped standards yet then they will before long... (BTW this is not a flame, this is just the way I express myself ((outlandishly))) Back in the OLD days of the draft, the judge would give you a choice, join or prison..............why? Because the military wouldn't let you in with too big a record......but now they have waivers......you can waiver anything........it is the civilian equivalent to hand-reciepts (all you ex's remember them? lol) Wanting and lusting are two entirely different worlds, and each is succeptable to its own set of underlying and driving forces.... Yes this is a bad thing. I am in the US Navy. Every Soldier, Sailor, Marine, and Airman knows that when he signs the dotted line and raises his hand he may go to war. He swears to protect this country from all enemies foreign and domestic. and to obey all orders from officers appointed over him. You dont like the war? tough. the military is VOLUNTARY, meaning YOU Signed up. no one forced you to. Did he honestly think that he could join the army and not have to go to war? I've done a tour in the gulf, including time spent on land in Iraq. I would go back in a heartbeat, in fact I just requested orders for land tour in Iraq. Our Commander in Chief, regardless of our opinion of him is still that, our Commander in Chief. When he says Iraq is the enemy. then Iraq is the enemy. If he says go to Iraq and fight. we go and fight. that's our job. that's what we signed up for. the Armed Forces have one purpose, to fight and win wars. Anyone who thinks otherwise has major problems. If you join, expect to fight. Going AWOL is illegal and a crime, and he should be sentenced accordingly at Courts-martial. That means confinement at Ft Leavenworth.

Both my grandfathers fought in wars and served in the Military The one that was in the Army is sane, but broken from the wars The other one was in the Marines, flew jets (least i think.. i keep my distance) and other things and he's pretty nuts My father retired from the navy and i have yet to meet anyone who is up to his standard My brother was in Iraq and so far damn sane Childhood friends that i have known since i was 1 years old are damn good soldiers Sabrina is in the AirForce - served in Iraq and is now Korea Billy is in the Army and served in Iraq Peter is in the Marines and he's nuts (and didnt serve Iraq) Soooooooooo Um what about ppl who serve in the wars and the standards of the military? Oh thats right, i forgot to mention that they're pretty much college graduates (cept pete) And my little brother at 14 is in military school right now.
