Amaros, wasn't it Hillary Clinton who first coined the phrase "politically correct" in public?

I have no idea, I think it was around a long time before that, I first recall hearing it in the Eighties - what was that movie with Michael Douglass?

Is it "politically correct" for a republican to advocate raising taxes and doing something about the debt, or expressing admiration for Hillary Clinton? My guess is you could get away with habitually calling women bitches and making lewd suggestions in public, or even shouting ethnic slurs in the middle of the street more easily than you could express even the slightest deviation from the party line - am I wrong?

Sab -> RE: Sick of PC (10/7/2006 12:53:07 PM)

I was gunna reply to that but I am mentally challenged! :-0

popeye1250 -> RE: Sick of PC (10/7/2006 12:58:55 PM)

Amaros, whoa, slowdown I just asked a simple question.
You went off  on a tangent there!
If it makes any difference I'm an Independant voter and despise Democrats and Republicans equally.
I think Clinton and Bush will go down as the two worst Presidents in history.

agirl -> RE: Sick of PC (10/7/2006 2:22:20 PM)

I've never really found the *If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all* a terribly useful adage.

Who's perception of *nice* are we meant to be using?...

Disagreeing is often taken as *not nice*.  If I was restricted to that daft adage I'd reduce my interaction by at least half........lol

I'm happy with anything constructive, it doesn't have to be *nice*.

And yes, liver and onions is gross and anyone who doesnt agree is just plain wrong.  Lmaoooooo

you sicko.  Liver by itself is just fine, it's only the addition of onions that makes it a perversion.

swtsouthernsub -> RE: Sick of PC (10/7/2006 2:49:43 PM)

well im a sicko then because i love liver and onions yummy

No, liver and onions actually IS gross!  [:D]

Did we have to drag the poor yummy onion into this? [sm=lol.gif]

In other words, just because I think something is gross, that does NOT mean that I think the person who likes it is gross...

"Except for a few of the totally weird ones"?  Either you respect everyone or you don't.  You can't have it both ways.

There are actually very few people I respect, some I have no respect for at all, and the rest I treat with respect until they show me which box they fit into...
So yes you can have it both ways...

No, I guess I don't understand, I must be having a blond day... Or maybe I do understand but think it's just a case of splitting hairs... [8|]

It would be nice if some of these words were defused, this one is largely defused amongst the hip-hop generation, but there are still people around who have witnessed family members arbitraily mob lynched, and worse - it's still an open wound, and it's worst excesses are not beyond the reach of living memory.

As used among African Americans, amongst the older generation, it retains some of it's original meaning, albeit in the perjorative sense, either connoting a base "hustler", or petty selfishness, while in the younger generation, it's mostly a figure of speech.

Reminds me of a Jackie Chan movie, when he and Chris Rock? walk into a pool hall and Jackie hears one guy say to another 'wos up nigga', so when he gets to the bar he says the same to the bartender and gets himself into a big brawl..

"African Americans" is a term I find rather odd.. I've lived in Europe and never heard the term "African Dutch" or "African German", here in Oz I've never heard "African Australian" either.. To me it just sounds like a PC way of maintaining 'segregation'..

Iskander...

Aine -> RE: Sick of PC (10/7/2006 9:12:19 PM)

I can definitely see your point.

But calling myself an Irish American....would you consider that segregation too?

To me, yeah, we're Americans.  But the REAL Americans are those who were here first.  And once we get into all that....now we're just talking semantics.

I don't consider it as a derrogatory term.  Some might. It's all in how we define things for ourselves.  Which is why for some odd reason it's ok for black people to use that infamous term that no one else is allowed to use without the possibility of getting our asses beat.  Some are just more offensive to larger groups of people than others.  There are no set definitions for those terms.  So there is going to be people who think one way and those who will think the opposite.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Sick of PC (10/7/2006 9:31:57 PM)

That's totally incorrect.  "Nigger" is from "Negro," meaning "black."

It also has to be one of the most offensive words in the English language regardless of the etymology.  Trying to justify its use isn't going to make you any friends.

I also got in trouble once for using the word "Negress", which actually has kind of erotic connotations for me, and I wasnt' aware it was on the banned list - "negro" simply being the Latin word for "Black".

For the record, "nigger" is the noun for of the Old English word, "nig", which means to scratch and scrape (to earn a living), i.e., to nig, from whence we also get the word "niggle", to haggle or harrass in a petty way. It's a name that White Appalachian farmers referred to themselves by, and was originally applied to African Americans as a token of solidarity, since in the beginning, Black slaves and poor whites, many indentured servants, were in the same boat - racisim had to be invented in order to head off the increasingly common bi-racial rioting that was occuring in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries. The "peculiar institution" consequently became peculiar indeed, as historically, American slavery was unique in it's need to reduce human beings to the status of inhuman animals, both linguistically and physically, in order to justify itself.

RiotGirl -> RE: Sick of PC (10/7/2006 10:16:03 PM)

How'd we go from disclaimers, to respect, to not saying mean things, to liver.. to the N word???  Now i know i skipped a couple of pages.. but STILL..... bad bad bad bad badddddddd boys.  The N word popped out of my wee ones mouth one day, she called me one actually, and after i got over my shock i told her if i ever heard that word come out of her mouth again i would slap her mouth.  Which is massively harsh from me as i stay clear of the face.  (then of course i sorta explained why it was such a baaaaaaaaaad word.. cos i think she thought she was just being silly)

Get the point boys, i'm pmsing and just finished 3 hours of driving and dun make me come over and slap your all's mouths.

dirty bad, ugly word.  No matter how you use it.. its dirty bad and ugly.  Tho i have to admit, i've heard black folks use it among them selves and i never feel like slapping their mouths.  Prolly cos i hear no derogatory stuff in.

Negro in spanish is black.  For some reason, thats just a really wierd word.  You know i think we should have purple, blue, red, and green ppl too.  So we can have all the colours of the rainbow.  Personally i think that olive, yellow, pink, white, golden, brown and black are kind of boring colours.

course if you think about it.. it is possible to become those colours.  But wouldnt it be nice if a person whose skin tone was purple was walking around.

LOL the idea that *I* am enabling people to remain oversensitive with my posting style is quite amusing.

I know - and, that is reaching - but, it is true.. we allow people to behave in a way that is negative to our common sense - and, then wonder why they are screaming at us and others when an explanation is not to their liking...

quote:

I think my history speaks directly opposite of this.  I can't tell you how many times I've been told I'm insensitive and just being mean without offering anything of real value in my postings.

I was not refering to "you" per se - simpy to the person writing

But since we don't live in that world, I simply find it practical and prudent to be careful (NOT pandering)  in my words as much as possible.  Not that it matters- plenty of people take things personally and in a very defensive manner anyway.  But I continue to do so because I know it's the right thing to do.

And, there is mine and (I believe) the OP'ers point succinctly... there will always be someone who will be annoyed that another person "darest to spake without excuse of authority".

I don't do things so that they won't offend, I do them because I feel it helps me communicate my feelings in the best way possible.

That I can agree with.

I always thought it was a colloquial for "Negroid" which is a descriptor of people from the African continent who exhibited very dark skin and specific attributes. And, that "Negro" was an offshoot of Negriod?

(Although, I never did delve into the etymology)

I'm not trying to justify it, nor is it part of my vocabulary - I'm not hip-hop, and I don't want to get my ass kicked.

As for the etymology, look it up in the OED.

becca333 -> RE: Sick of PC (10/8/2006 6:17:38 AM)

Maybe they should go the opposite way, to take the power out of the word.

'Wog' used to be a really insulting put-down used on southern European migrants.  Then some comedians with that cultural heritage put on a show - 'Wogs out of work'.  It was a smash hit, they had another show 'Wogarama', TV show, movies. Now the term has lost its power.

Instead of shrinking from a word, we could take the sting out of it through humour.

Amaros -> RE: Sick of PC (10/8/2006 7:53:45 AM)

Absolutely, it's just that I'd prefer leave this one to the pros... let them get their asses kicked, heh.

Point being, I don't find it to be an imposition, or any great strain to eliminate the word from, my colloquial vocabulary, and doing so has never resulted in any complications for me. Notably, I can recal every specific instance of my using the N word in the past Thirty years.

The only time I remember using it in anything other than a scholarly/linguistic analysis sense in the last Twenty years, was one night like ten years ago when a friend and I were riffing on George Bush (H), i.e., in a Texas drawl: "I got it! Sell the (expletive deleted) some crack! We'll clean up! Maybe they be so fucked up they'll vote for me by mistake" etc.

There is good evidence that in fact, crack was pumped into LA to drive property values down, in order to create development opportunities - the Reagan administration specialized in real estate fraud and scams, if you recall, and there is an impressive list of indictments to that effect.

It's a matter of public record that the CIA was involved in running crack into LA LAM, google it, you can find transcripts of the congressional hearings on the subject.
