Would someone be kind enough to explain the basic roles and responsibilities of a "pet" to me?  And what is the difference between a pet and a slave?

Much appreciated....

This post will be quickly followed by the hordes that will declare anything having to do with definitions isn't the bother but........

A 'pet' could simply be a pet name, like darling, sweetheart, and the like.

A 'pet' could imply a type of training, like puppy training.  Crawling, leash and collar, feeding or drinking from a bowl, etc.  Non-verbal communication.

Could be lots of things.

Jeff

Asking for definitions of terms here is like asking someone to define the color red.

A pet to one, is something completely different to another.  As well as a slave and the roles and responsibilities of anyone within the constraints of a D/s or M/s dynamic generally is limited and defined only and best, by those involved in that particular relationship.

You're going to get a shit-ton of opinions on each, and a crapload of stuff in between.  Do not take those as rules, laws, or anything set it stone.

Take the information you get from anyone involved in BDSM as a very vague guideline, and sometimes with a grain of salt, and create from there the things that fit YOU.

In my personal definition, the difference between a pet and a slave is the emotional attachment.  Angel is my pet. But then again, you wil hear a million different ideas. Why, becasue it is just a title. When you begin discusions with a Dom, your best bet is to ask them what it means to them.  That way, you know what your getting into specificaly instead of trying to ferret a useful definition out of everyone elses opinions.

A pet is something you have to feed, unless it has recently been to the taxidermist.

JMO,  a Pet gets a lot more leeway and tolerance of  independent behavior.

To my understanding, a common way to look at it is: A Pet is treated as an animal, very commonly as a puppy. This involves eating out of a dish on the floor, etc etc. A slave, for all loss of rights, is still treated as human.

My thought on it is - my pet is someone I play with, but I don't really expect anything from him other than play.  Kind of like my non-human pets - I enjoy them and have affection for them, but they have no responsibilities.  If I had a slave, I would have expections of him.  A pet could ultimately become a slave if we both deemed it appropriate, but it is not an automatic progression.

Aine,

Excellent post.  I think that last sentence would make a fine sig line.

Thank you to those who took the time to offer a thoughtful response.  I do realize that this is an established community of those with a lot of experience in the lifestyle, so I an grateful for some leeway regarding my beginner's queries.  I have heard many different variations on the topic of pets, so the clarifications were helpful.

for this slave, the word 'pet' is nothing more than an endearment. Other's will naturally disagree though.
