My cat Fred is about seventeen years old. He's deaf, loosing his hair along his back and going grey. I've always had cats. I can't imagine not having one. Fred, by far is the best I've ever owned. He is laid back, has a sense of humor and is just a cuddly joy. I just get sad, knowing how old he is. Knowing that it's only a matter of time until he dies. It's amazing how attached one can get to a furry little creature.

I lost the best cat I ever had about two years ago. He was 5 or 6 when I got him...a rescue cat. They were going to put him to sleep and I couldn't have any part of that so adopted him. Had him for 12 years before he died in my arms. I still tear up thinking about him. Even though I have 3 cats now that one was the closest to my heart.

My best friend and co-worker had a cat named Budweiser, I think he was 13 or 14. When we evacuated for the hurricane last year, she took Budweiser with her, but he got killed by a car when they pulled over that first night. She was heartbroken.

Our family has always had cats and going back to childhood, and normally more than one, as now. I have one my, brothers have 4 between them. Only one is close to the end at about 18 years old...but you describe your cat Aileen, as being a lot like a few old doms around here. Yes, cats are the pet to have for me and are entertaining and low maintenance. You will miss Fred but will love any new one that will be lucky enough to come along.

Poor lad. Sounds like it's all falling apart for him. Literally.

Pets are very attaching although give me a dog any day.

Anyway, dogs are amazing animals. Come home from work to a dog and it's all over you, loves you to bits but with a cat it just sort of looks at you with a degree of cynicism and disgust and you know it's thinking something along the lines of "who are you?, what are you doing in my house?, close the door on your way out?".

Good luck with him and if all else fails there must be a cat wig shop somewhere you can use to sort out his hair loss.

hi, cat lady here. love 'em all! only one lives with me,shes not old,yet. my colony is in the country under my son's care(40 kitties,all special needs, no adoptions,they retire there for life) and the eldest so far is my spoiled baby, Dogface,at the ripe old age of 10,not bad for an outside kitty! He hugs necks,leaps into my arms,and ,bless him, drools when hes happy.

I have a twelve year old dog too who thinks he's a cat. Spends his whole day sleeping on my bed curled right up around the cat.

I have always had pets around me. I spoil them rotten. One of the two dogs is currently lounging on the leather sofa watching me thru sleepy eyes. The other is stretched out across my king sized bed. There is also a cat in this home, however he seems to feel he is a dog rather than a cat. Other cats terrify him. He loves to play with dogs 7 times his size, sleep with them, even wash their faces. He likes to ride in the car, and walks with me when I walk the dogs. With leather furniture I didn't want another inside cat but he had other ideas and moved right in and has stayed with us for 5 years now.

I can understand that completely. I have a cat that I've had since I was thirteen thats really getting up there (she's about 16). But she's still pretty spry, although I am convinced that she's going a bit senile (she likes to meow up the stairs like she's forgotten where she is and is desperately upset).

Now that I don't agree with. I am definitely not a person who will continue to give love without receiving love in return.

All of the cats I have owned have been very, very affectionate and loving. Both of the cats I currently own come up to me frequently and rub up against me. One of them is like my shadow and likes to be near me whatever room of the house I am in. One of them even sleeps on top of me every night. All of the love I have given to these and the other cats I have owned over the years has been returned many times over.

Yes, it is amazing how attached you can get to a cat. I had to put one down a few years back because she developed cancer, was suffering, and there was nothing that could be done for her. That was really, really difficult, but I treasured the many years we had together.

My sister just lost her Toby dog.. an adorable poodle mix. She was almost 17 years old, she was just slightly older than my son. My sister was very sad that she passed, and even had her in diapers because she is incontinent, and blind and deaf. They really become a part of the family

I totally feel your love for Fred.
After I lost my Lab/Ridgeback in 1997, it made me think. Nutcracker was the same age at Kutu and he will go unexectly like Kutu did too. So When I found Danni (a homeless, horribly abused Austrailian Shepherd) at the SPCA, I found Princess at the Vet's office a week later. The old cat man, Nutcracker, didnt like the new feline addition, but he knew why I'd gotten a pretty little kitty. Kutu was gone, his best buddy for 7 years. I got both Kutu and Nutcracker in Zimbabwe and brought them home with me when my work contract was up.
Nutcraker was 19 when he impaled himself winter of 2005...I was devastated when he died. I took Princess (kitty), Danni (aust Shep) and Jordan (Bichon) to the hosptial with me and at 1am we held Nutcracker as he was put to sleep.
Dammit I still cry !!

I adopted a ferret. How stupid of me !!

I will be feeling the "I can't imagine not having...." when slowly they all pass away... my 3 remaining KIDS are all 9 !!
The ferret might be history soon.... anyone know someone who wants one? lololol

Does anyone cremate and keep the ashes of their pets?
Or have them put in pet cemertaries?
Or bury them in your back yard?

I had a cat for 17 years and he just died this past January. He was totally attached to me and very affectionate. He was playful and a ball buster too. I mean he really knew how to fuck with me, he'd have me turning the bath water on for him and then meowing at the basement door, than back to the water etc. Oh and he only drank running water, he wouldnt touch still water in a bowl. He loved french fries and tuna salad and He would sleep on my bed usually, and when I got up in the morning, he'd sit at the top of the stairs and wait for me and we'd walk down together. He actually had a personality. He was attached to my hip from 'kittenhood'.

He didnt suffer much in the end, but he had gotten thinner and started getting some gray hairs and he was meowing alot more....sort of like a whiney kinda thing and I didnt think much of it, because he used to be an attention whore anyway. I feel guilty because it never really crossed my mind that he was sick or dying and maybe if I had taken him to the vet he wouldve lived longer. Im ok with it now. It was his time and he didnt suffer some horribly long drawn out death. He was so friggin special and I miss that damn cat. But ..yeah...they will die on ya eventually--Damn ball busters that they are, they just have to have the last laugh.

Edited to add...that the death isnt that bad...he just went outside and picked a bush and died under it.

A few years ago my old siamese cat died at the age of 21. He was born on my chest, and had been with me his entire life. It left a big hole in my life when he passed on.
I have cats still, but they do not seem as important to me, maybe a defensive reaction on my part, or perhaps its because they have only been around 2 years.

Mr. Cat...he was possibly between 5 & 7 when he decided to move in with me...he understood English & spoke some...he adored me...he was my best friend, thru thick & thin for the next 14 years...one day, i was lying in bed & he was looking into my eyes & i knew that he was dying...i took him to the vet even tho i hadn't noticed any symptoms & the vet said he had lymphosarcoma of the spine, metastasized to his liver...i took him home & roasted him a turkey--his favorite food--sauteed chicken livers in mass quantities of butter, gave him the time to say goodbye to the kitten i had gotten for him several years before & then took him in for the euthanasia...he lay there & stared into my eyes as he died...it was such a wonderful experience, his friendship, his loyalty & his love & to be there at the moment that he left, what an honor...i was devastated & it took such a long time to fill the void...now i have Spike the Amazing Wonder Dog & he helps!! i understan exactly what you're going thru...& my heart goes out to you.....

Until recently i had 7 cats 2 dogs and 2 horses. After the death of my husband i couldn't afford the care i had always given with front line and such so i had to give up 4 of the cats. I cried and cried but i gave up the 4 i knew would find good homes and kept the 3 that had injuries or special needs because i knew they would be put to sleep and could not stand that. Friends have offered to take take my dogs and i have just looked at them and said my son and i consider all our animals to be family and we have given up 4 more family members and can not do anymore. As for cats not being affectionate that is crazy. Few cats i have owned were anything but just as loving and caring as the dogs. One of my cats was and is a watch dog. He will love the burgalar as long as he doesn't bring a dog cause only my dogs are allowed in the yard. All the neighborhood dogs are afraid of him as they should be. My dogs also do duel duty as the door bell which is nice also.

Enjoy the time you and your kitty still have....!!!! They are wonderful creatures!

I'm also a cat person...not real hot on dogs (they just need too much attention like having a kid around)

My current cat is the female half of a brother/sister pair I got 12 years ago. The brother died while I was giving him a belly rub (he was about 6yrs old)....he just kinda coughed and did a little short kick and died? His one eye pupil was dialated and the other one was normal so we suspected an anurism of some sort? I still miss the little guy....he was my shadow.

I luv the way that kitty kats have their different personalities,etc. Also like it that you can leave some dry food out.....take off on the bike for a week or two...return home and the cat will be there waiting on the front porch for your return....maybe a little pissed but they'll be there!

Arpig, relax. It wasn't intended to offend Aileen. I've lived with pets all of my life so I know exactly where she is coming from. It was a light-hearted view on dogs and cats and in no way serious. Do you really think that I think I understand the psyche of a cat?

If any offence was taken by Aileen then apologies to Aileen. Maybe intentions aren't clear in a typed message or maybe the international boundaries of humour are at play.

Either way Arpig, if you were genuinely offended then a private message along the lines of "what are you playing at?" would have been more appropriate. Maybe you wanted to make a show of your empathy? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Aileen, apologies if it came across like I was being flippant. It certainly wasn't intended that way.
