I've seen a lot of comments from people who've been told that they're not 'real' BDSMers because they don't do 24/7. Then I've seen other comments from people who aren't active in the scene but who say that their BDSM orientation is a basic part of their makeup, the core of their personality.

Is there some level of involvement that makes you 'real'? And is there some sort of hierarchy, since some people seem to feel they're somehow better or more entitled than others?

What I do is real, and it needn't have a particular venue, ensemble or catchy phrase to complete or legitimize it. Some may label my likes as "BDSM," but I know they go far beyond that.

Is there some big divide between the out-and-proud-24/7-total lifestylers and the hopeful dreamers/part-timers?

I view it as a scale from 0-10. The folks who rate a 10 on the reality scale are the ones who have a realistic view of the world; the ones who get a 0 have their heads filled with their own private fantasies about how the kinky world should be, and they do stuff like send notes to chicks saying "kneel bitch" or they are waiting for their perfect dom to whisk them away in a golden carriage drawn by pink unicorns.

So the folks in between are scored depending on how much fantasy makes up their reality. I think they are ALL real, and it just depends if they are realistic or real crazy.

"Real", "not real", "fake" are all terms thrown around so much in cyber and real world that they cannot be taken seriously. Pretty much any people who use them are generally using them for mostly two reasons.

1) I am judging you not as good as me because my self esteem needs to judge people instead of letting them be them and me be me.
2) People who cannot handle rejection, differences of opinions or choices. Then the terms are just use as a generic put down.

If you are true to yourself and honest to others then nobody is better then you. You are just different from them and that is perfectly fine. In the end all these terms and definitions, like real, sub, bottom, etc. are just nothing more then helping form a common language within a specific social circle. They are not meant to judge and people who use them like that are not worth the time to argue with. Are you happy with who you are and what you do and the person(s) happy to be with you. Being true to yourself and treating others with class is what "real" is to me. It has nothing to do with how others judge or opinion of me.

Lin

Well said.

I'd add that in my experience with the syndrome, it often boils down to a confusion of fashion over style, and/or, style over substance - you are basically not reinforcing their fantasy, and you are, therefore, "not real" - it means they can't handle social intercourse between equals and they need an excuse to flake.

I have to remind them at this point that fashion is a form of ugliness so offensive that we have to change it every six months. Unfortunately, we live in a materialistic, fashion conscious society, where identity is associated with consumption, and fashion fuels consumption - if you don't buy into this particular fantasy, you are "not real", and must be some kind of commie or loser, no?

Other times I have to ask, a real what?

This consumption culture tends to filter down into subcultures - you can be hip-hop, but if you don't have a car, you can walk, or ride a skateboard, but not ride a bike (past a certain age) - and you can still be real, but not as real as if you sink Sixty grand into pimping out your Honda Civic - cultural commodification that leads to a clash of fantasies, and some, of course, are more fun, and less expensive than others.

The irony here, is of course, that should you buy into this, you have largely ceased to be a real human yourself, and most likely have become merely a walking advertisement, and paying for the privilage. The thing is, I find that kind of demeaning, I don't care if other people have their fantasies, but I don't feel obligated to finance them.

Politically, this is taken to extremes, a conservative ommentator asked what he thought about polls going against their team, responded that the polls were positive - what he meant of course, was that the polls were positive among the people that mattered - likely republican voters, the core constituancy. The "others" were, for him, "not real" to the degree that that their very existence was an afterthought.

Culture wars are really fantasy wars, some fantasies just happen to reflect objective reality better than other ones - the other day Rush Limbaugh did about a half hour trying to discredit the concept of empirical evidence and scientific method itself, leaving... what?

Why, the opinion of Rush Limbaugh, of course. So it goes.

We've been 24/7 for one year, prior to that LDR for two years. In some ways we are more 'real' now and in some ways the D/s was more pronounced then. I figure there's the same amount, but instead of saving it up for a month until we saw each other, we just spread it through daily life.

But most of life is vanilla. Work, laundry, grocery shopping, bills. That's real and none of it cares if you're M/s, D/s, kinky or plain vanilla.

I feel very cheated, Daddy did not bring a golden carriage drawn by pink unicorns when we met at IHOP. I feel seriously jipped.

Whats up with that?

You're not real until you've been told by at least five people that you're not real.

But - what if you have been told you are "not real" by dozens of people??

Is there a point of saturation where you surpase the unrealness of the situatoin and become sureal - and/or - (and, this is my goal) "Far Out??!!

Don't feel bad, Julia. We met in the parking lot at KFC and yeah there were unicorns and a golden carriage but it turns out the pink was just sprayed-on.

Of course I had promised the first time we chatted online that I would "obey his every command" so when he said "You will not bail because of the unicorns not really being pink", I had no choice but to stay.

He is still on the air?

Fascinating.  A man who advocated mandatory criminal sentences for drug abuse, then is found abusing drugs, but doesnt check himself in to serve the mandatory criminal sentence he recommended for other people illegally abusing drugs.

And his public are too obtuse to go "Huh?" and change the channel.

Yet another right-winger who thinks laws should apply to everybody else, but they themselves have an ever renewing Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free card.

He got you with that you are not a 'real submissive' unless you accept flocked unicorns! Wow, that is a low blow!

I thought Rush Limbaugh was right wing.  Learn something new every day.

p.s. if you are referring to me, exactly how do I stand on mandatory sentencing laws?

As far as I am concerned Me and mine are real and what others think make not a bit of difference to either of us. As long as your happy and fulfilled who cares what other people think? Its not a popularity contest its peoples lives.

Actually since Rush was busted in Florida I do not know what California's mandatory three strikes your out type of sentencing laws have to do with Rush. Floridians should have busted him on first degree hyprocrisy... but that is just me... yadda yadda yadda

Well, if anyone would have bothered to follow though instead of just buying what the media feeds you.  It turned out to be a witch hunt for Rush.  All charges dropped, no proof of drug abuse, no proof of fake prescriptions.  Turns out no proof of anything that he was charged with.  Some people will repeat anything they hear.  Never seem to care if it is true or not.
