LOL out here .22s are for target practice, I used a .45 long colt single action army when I was riding or my 1911 .45 acp. I usually had my .03 in my saddle scabbard ready for the long shots of a couple hundred yards.

Ken, is that a .32 WCF or a 32-20? I have a double action 32-20 pistol that is nice but I would like to pair it with a lever action rifle in the same caliber.

I don't find it a challenge using a rifle at less than a couple hundred yards.  Downing a deer with a .22 however IS a challenge.

Which is why I taught my ex to shoot her snub nose 38 at 100 yards, if you can do that, hitting a man in a doorway is effortless.

I trained myself to hit a man sized target at 150 meters with my 1911 .45 acp   the books say the max effective range is 50 feet but I don't think that they knew what they were talking about

Heck, if they came in much closer I could stab em...lol. The close quarters does require that other hunting skills are up to par though. Deer are extremely intelligent animals and in that setting silence is of vital importance, as is scent. One movement or a light wind at your back...well.....that's the reason why so many never end up on a plate.

Although I enjoy more long distance hunts on occasion, I actually like the close proximity because I can better assess the health and age of the animal. It's also more difficult at short distance to mistake a button for a doe. The other thing that factors in is that most often I am out there alone, so a short drag distance is desirable.

Guns are funny.  A buddy and I were refinishing 1911s when they were being imported from China (old lendlease guns and whatnot) and built one using the most pitted and rusty parts.  The slide had pits deep enough you could see through them, same with the frame and the barrel had NO rifling left at all.  We did however select the tightest fitting parts and he is an expert on the 1911 and what makes them tick.

We took that piece of junk to the range and managed to keep them all in the 10 ring at seven yards.  What made that amazing was every round keyholed!  That means the bullets were not flying true they were simply tumbling through the air and hitting the target sideways!

If you can hit a man sized target reliably with a handgun at 150 yards, that is some damn fine shooting!

The 1911 is my weapon of choice.   I went to the range one day to qualify with my m16 and due to circumstance didn't get to shoot.   So I asked the company commander if I could use his 1911 since the pistol range was still open and therefore meet my annual qualification requirements.    so he let me and the armorer shoot.   I went out one handed (right) and put 7 rounds in a silver dollar sized pattern just as fast as I could pull the trigger.   the co came over and said I know you had to miss.   so we went to the target and he said you ca't to that again.   I said right or left handed?    he looked at me funny and said left.   So we went back to the firing line and I did it again   left handed    he told the armor froom now on I was to be issued the 45 and he would carry my m16   LOL

I did go out with the germans once.   We didn't know it was a team competition but came up with enough people to compete.   We were firing a G3 that none of us had ever fired before.   we were given 7 rounds  One round to figure windage and 6 for cmpetition.   I put all 6 in a 2 cm bull at 300 meters.  I consider those a shit shot.   couldn't believe I did that good.

I have seen my sister strike matches at 100 yards with a m1 carbine.   she scares me.   lol

You may a bright girl, I haven't seen many of your posts so can't say but improved discussion skills would certainly improve the all round package.

I'm just bright enough to realize that discussing with you is futile, because no answer anyone is going to give to any of your 'questions' is going to be good enough for you.

On you're superiority point, do I feel superior to right-wing Americans? Yes, absolutely. Do I feel superior to right-wing Dutch, British, French, etc? Yes, absolutely. Nationality has no bearing on it, I personally think all of those on the right are fools because of the personal values they hold that lead them to the right and I'll defend my point of view until the cows come home. When I'm wrong I'll hold my hands up and say so.

So, settle down and join in or else I'll have no option but to put up a link of Garth Brooks for a Garth Brooks/Europop dance off for the title of most ridiculous music on the planet and I know you wouldn't want that on your conscience.

NG - why do you think right wing views are all of the same ilk, when you deny that your left wing views bear any relation to socialist principles? Just curious.

I thought you were asking for American's views on guns in this thread, but now it seems to me that what you were actually asking for, was for Americans to justify themselves as opposed to your views.

Its not right wing to hold that the citizens of a country - thats citizens, not enslaved tax generators, should have the right to bear arms. Its a natural position to hold that those who abide by the law and contribute to a common wealth, should be treated as adults, surely? For what reason should they not be allowed the freedom to do what they like under laws which they have all agreed to follow?

Or is it that you prefer a system where citizens are strictly controlled by a central government of apparatchiks, and where citizens are happy to idolise their glorious leaders for the small freedoms they are permitted? This is more of a left wing model, (if we are to concede your point that all right wing views are of the same ilk, then all left wing views must also be so), which holds that the people are all stupid and backwards and can only function under the guidance of those who know whats best for them.

I really would like to understand where you are coming from NG. It could be that you are a genius beyond our comprehension - unlikely though, since every post you make on politics et al seems to be far from unique in its originality.

...... and just to add. I think if you asked Americans about their politics, you'd be as likely to find the same proportion of Democrats as Republicans support gun ownership, as well as oppose it.

Hi Ken

I cant help but think he was looking for you all to step forward as gun owners and say stuff that would confirm that youre all right wing religious nuts bordering on nazis, that would then allow him to confirm to himself at least that gun ownership must be a bad thing, because of the people who have them and defend their right to have them.

Thats more or less why I asked a few pages back, why people shouldnt be allowed to have them.

yeah but why give him the satisfaction?   Education is far better.   Then he can draw his own conclusions.   I even had a shrink once suggest that I go to the range because killing targets relieved some stress in my life (transferance)   made me feel better and was pretty much harmless and supervised.   LOL

If I thought anything anyone said might result in him drawing conclusions, I'd leave off, believe me! Problem is, he already has his conclusions and is looking for affirmation of them it seems.

I would love to have a real gun - for much the reason your shrink gave. There is something about shooting things that is just so damned good for getting rid of stress. Thats why I think I enjoyed it so much in the good old days when I could blow holes in stuff, and the criminals had very few weapons - the restrictions really worked out well for us! Thats the reason I dont need to shoot anyone or anything living even (I would shoot an animal, if I needed to eat, but I dont, so I wouldnt), but would like to play with a machine gun and an old trailer, for instance.

ROFL   I am good with a rifle or a pistol   but a machine gun   I just can't seem to get the damn thing to shoot what I want.   Never could.      Oh since I go out in the desert now and don't have real targets I use engineer stakes   they are only an inch and a  half wide and I figure if I can hit it  I can just about hit anything.   And if I don't hit it, well then I figure I scared the shit out of it anyway   LOL

If you leave out 3rd Party and Independents, you are neglecting a large percentage of the people here (on this board)!

I support gun ownership.

Also, I'm convinced that the powers-that-be wouldn't hesitate for a moment to use force against any individual or group they feel threatened by. However, they have far more effective weapons in their arsenal than the use of force. My prediction is that they will continue to slowly usurp the power of the people as they chip away at The Constitution and further their agendas... all without ever firing a shot.

Personally, when I think of gun-ownership, I don't even remotely entertain the thought of being a one-man army fighting off a military or governmental swat team. I think more in terms of protection against criminals, and not wanting my rights under The Constitution further eroded.

Ken - thats the beauty of a machine gun though! You dont need to be good with it - youre bound to hit something and it makes such a lot of noise! Its also why I'd need an old trailer about 20 yards away - so I couldnt miss!
