You would think that would be so, but it doesn't appear to be very accurate. There are certain words which are hot buttons, like a stranger calling a straight guy a faggot.

Hello A/all,

A "faggot" is a stick of firewood in Britain.

The problem I have with the calling homosexuals "faggot" comes from the Catholic (early middle ages) practice of burning men convicted of the crime of sodomy at the stake.

I wont use certain perjorative terms because of the history behind the word, and what it represented when it went from a non-offensive to being considered an offensive word.

Just me, could be wrong, but there ya go.

becca333 -> RE: It's true NOT "twue"!!!! (10/15/2006 5:52:15 AM)

That's fascinating - and kind of scary!

So...what's the cure?

mnottertail -> RE: It's true NOT "twue"!!!! (10/15/2006 5:52:21 AM)

This is fascinating...........

Where do I fit then? 'Cause I sure am into watching the cholesterol flaking off the veins, and am a decided shit-stirrer, but usually run alone........Do they got a  name for that?

Curiously,
Ron

(other than impudent or sociopathic, I mean)

I teach negotiation strategy and theory, and this thread (without, sadly, the Fuddisms) could be in my textbook.

Did you all notice what happened here (in part)?   The "wolfpack" theory in full display.

Morning, E. What happens when it's more than one pack? Just a wandering thought that went through me noggin...[:D]

p.s. to keep the thread on topic does anybody know name of the comedian who sang the Rolling Stones song "Satisfaction" in Elmer Fudd's voice?

p.p.s. Have you heard the Vandals remake of "Heartbreak Hotel"?  One of the most lovingly misogynistic songs ever made.  Ranks up there with Guns N Roses "I used to love her" as a paragon of shining light in the darkness of breaking up with one's partner.

Emperor1956 -> RE: It's true NOT "twue"!!!! (10/15/2006 6:07:18 AM)

A total and complete hijack.

Sinergy:  A "faggot" is a stick of firewood in Britain.

The proscenium arch of the old Goodman Theater in Chicago had emblazoned across it "You yourselves must set flame to the faggots which you have brought."  I've never been able to find the source of that quote.  Considering it was in a major theater school, and you KNOW what men in theater are *GRIN* it caused more than a little snickering and fear.

From Wikipedia:
quote:

A faggot or fagot is a bundle of sticks or branches, usually meant for use as firewood. It derives through the Old French fagot and the Italian diminutive faggotto from the Latin facus ("bundle", itself from fasces), coming into Middle English no later than 1279. It has also been used on occasion to refer more specifically (attested from 1555 in English) to wood for funeral pyres or a burning at the stake, and recanting heretics had to wear an embroidered figure of a faggot on their sleeve.
When a faggot is wrapped in only one band or withe, instead of the traditional two, it is also referred to as a bavin.
Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faggot_%28wood%29"

Of course, the root term is also the root for "fascist".  And wow..a new word..."bavin".  Who says this thread isn't elucidating?

In Britain, cigarettes are often called faggots or fags.

Yep, you're quite right, it is a bundle of firewood here in the UK....but it's rare for us to say we're popping outside to get a faggot these days.

I have to say that I've never heard cigarettes called faggots, but yes, they are called *fags* here.

I nominated you, that is not the same as being appointed.  I'm sure you can find the definition of each  in your ever-handy dictionaries.
As to your assertions that the people who attempted to use gentle humor in this thread are immature, I would say that a lack of humor is more dangerous than allowing one's inner child out for some sillines occasionally.  And to your contention that humor denotes a lack of intelligence, my response is this: s/he who laughs last didn't get the joke.

becca333 -> RE: It's true NOT "twue"!!!! (10/15/2006 6:17:43 AM)

I think we should champion the word 'bavin'.  How come 'faggots' got all the publicity?

Level, good morning, too.  Y'know, that's a very good question.  Usually we talk about isolating the "wolfpack" or the key actors from the part of the group that is either trying to make a decision, or trying to acheive a goal -- I don't know what happens when there are multiple packs.  I suspect that the group dynamics become attenuated.  I will read up on it.

quote:

becca333:  That's fascinating - and kind of scary!

So...what's the cure?

Its human dynamics, I'm not sure there is a "cure", but what you, as a negotiator/facilitator try to do is recognize the "wolfpack" and isolate it or break it up.  Knowing what is going on in the dynamic is the key, because you can anticipate behavior, even if you can't "cure" it.  Sometimes, if you are really skillful, you can use the "pack" because they rarely think independently.  So if you have an issue under discussion that you want to bring to a close (like a vote to adopt a secondary issue so you can move on to the main issue) you can try to bring the leaders of the wolfpack to the table, knowing their followers will follow.

So my question for you, becca, is does "333" mean you are only 1/2 demonic *GRIN*?

and finally:

a name?  How about "tickler" because you always make me smile?  nahhhh that's not Dom enough.   I'll work on it!  Keep stirring Ron, keep stirring.

Iskander -> RE: It's true NOT "twue"!!!! (10/15/2006 6:19:26 AM)

A good observation, but what is your conclusion about the 'pack' turning on the original 'wolf'... An 'alpha' outst, or a failed grab for the title?

There was a definate undercurrent here that is not immediately apparant or in your observation...

Would love to chat to you about these things you teach at some time...

Iskander...

Oh god, this place must give you a constant hard-on.  I can't tell you how many times people will state one thing and then post something in complete opposition.  It makes me shake my head and wonder about them, and then I laugh.  Because it's only a message board and I think they don't realize how they come across to others.

Iskander, I have to think about the "outcome".  There is ANOTHER strategy that people use in group dynamics called "Mama Bear" (no, the "mama bear" doesn't have to be female) where a group member, perceived as "older and wiser" comes in and settles down the warring factions, often (verbally) cuffing recalictrant players into place.  That might have been the endgame here.

What is the undercurrent you see (if you'll share)?

And ... a disclaimer:  Personality theories, group dynamics, negotiation theory are all MODELS.  You can't always fit human behavior into a neat little box (that's part of what makes it human).  While I teach this stuff, write about it and use it in my daily life (buy Me a drink and we can talk all night about negotiation theory and B/D/S/M!) I have to always back off a bit and remind folks these are predictive models of the interaction of very complex beings.

Kurt Vonnegut said once his characters in his novels were connected to him not by steel bars, but by stale rubber bands -- that's how I view all of this stuff.  It is a guide, but human beings will always surprise and sometimes shock you.

If you want to chat, jot me a note?

E.

justheather -> RE: It's true NOT "twue"!!!! (10/15/2006 6:33:48 AM)

There are a few things Ive noticed, watching this thread unfold. If you don't mind, Id like to share.

My first thought goes something like this:

Most people with any sort of intelligence whatsoever recognize when another person makes statements or gestures in an attempt to ingratiate themself to those they perceive to be the ones with the power/popularity/strength at any given moment.
And even those who are in the group being kissed-up-to, once recognizing this fact, usually find the behavior so repugnant that they refuse the offered alignment.

Just thought Id throw that out there for anyone who may benefit from it.

In the interest of brevity, I'll save the other thought for some other time. I'll just say it has something to do with middle school and the bitch du jour, or de la semaine as the case seems to be...just remember as you make your alliances and start yet another veiled why-we-dont-like-so-and-so thread that there are fifty two weeks in every year and somebody's gonna be the odd-bitch-out next week.

mistoferin -> RE: It's true NOT "twue"!!!! (10/15/2006 6:37:11 AM)

Damn!!!! I post an opinion about how I think that belittling people with "so called" humor and babytalk is immature.....and it turns into a belittling/babytalk fest. Well, I have to say that I am more than a little amused at the irony. 12 pages and my opinion still stands...actually, stronger than ever after reading all of this. Thanks for the entertainment.....have a ball y'all.
