What is the only word in the English language that changes both meaning and pronounciation when you capitalize it?

(No it has nothing to do with the phrase "the English Language" if you read the other riddle post)

Capitalize the first letter, or all caps?

Because all caps will be many........

Actually, it does not always change the meaning.  For example:

"Polish the floors, then get back in your cage until your beating."

See?  I am bitter over not getting it!

benji

awww dont be bitter

In that context it dosent necassarily change but capital and not capital is the only way to tell the difference between the two words unless used in a sentence.

Unless someone writes it in a list of words to be used in a sentence, and all of them are capitalised.......

Ever think of that?

There are plenty of words like that.  In addition to "polish," off the top of my head I can think of "reading."  I remember seeing a whole list of them somewhere.

This has nothing to do with the riddle but

worcestershire is pronounced wooster by people that live there

the sauce though is only pronounced worse-te-shire

weirdness!

No, "Worcester" is pronounced "Wooster" by people that live there.  "Worcestershire" is pronounced "Woostasher."

And benji, not any place name works.  It has to be a place name that's also a word and is pronounced differently from that word.  There's still tons of them, but it's not as though ANY city name will work.

Mmhmm. The use/mention distinction. Yes, well ... quite so ...

But I'm pretty sure only pedantic people pay much attention to stuff like that.

And pee-dantic dogs, maybe.

The personal pronoun "I" is pronounced like "eye". Aye, it is.

But "i" as the name of what mathematician's call "the imaginary unit" would in a perfect world be pronounced: "ihh"

But alas in this non-imaginary world they prononce it, aye, so it rhymes with fly guy and pig sty.

Anyway now that the riddle is solv-ed I thought that by introducing the expression "imaginary unit" I might get benji to tug at the leash in a whole new direction. Toward Reading, maybe. I suppose we might reach that august destination sometime around August.

This "Woostasher" of which you speak. Is this a person who seldom expresses surprise or rather someone who hoards the wherewithall for romance? Or maybe someone who sports a titanic growth of upper lip hair?

Speaking of place names, can anyone think of a word, besides "Dwingeloo/dwingeloo" which has three syllables when capitalized but only two when uncapitalized?

Dwingeloo (dwing galoo), as you will recall is a galaxy appearing to us in Casseopeia. Whereas dwingeloo (dwinj loo), well, trust me you don't wanna go there.

Well, I realize that London is neither a word, nor pronounced differently than london.  However, Cork & cork are pronounced very differently, unless you actually speak both with an Irish accent.

benji
