ORIGINAL: ownedgirlie Hot damn, I actually agree with you about something! The auto industry is a fine example of what you're talking about. Employees wanted higher wages while the rest of us wanted to pay less for cars. It is perplexing to me to see people driving around in Hondas while sporting an American Flag bumper sticker. Would this be a Honda made at American Honda's factory in Georgia or Alabama? Seems more patriotic to me to buy one of those, than a Chevy or Ford made in Indonesia or Mexico or wherever. In the days of Globalization, what nationality a company claims it is has little relation to where the product is made. After NAFTA passed, a huge number of US industries fled south of the border to take advantage of cheap labor rates. They have been moving back north of the border because along with cheap labor rates they got a largely unskilled and uneducated work force. So their defect rate skyrocketted and people started to become disenamored with their products. One of the reasons Honda and Toyota and Nissan have done so well is the Japanese interpretation of the term "defect rate." Japanese manufacturers allowed a 1% defect rate to mean that out of one hundred cars, one will have a defective part. American manufacturers interpreted a 1% defect rate to mean that out of every 100 parts in a car, one will be defective. Over time, people became disenchanged with the quality of American cars. Then somebody at GM had a bright idea a few years ago, "why dont we build cars to the same standards as you would find in an Acura or a Lexus?" To avoid being painted with a historical brush stroke, they named their company Saturn. Additionally, you go to a Saturn dealer, they tell you how much the car costs. You pay them the amount it costs and drive away. I miss my old Saturn, but after it died with 200k miles on it, I was not in a position to buy a new one. The next car I buy will probably be their sub-compact SUV thingie (has to be big enough to carry my armor suit), or if they make a truck... Just me, could be wrong, but there you go. Sinergy
