When I was a kid, I loved Halloween, it seemed it was the only day I could dress up and be me.

Locally they decorate for Halloween as big as Christmas, I mean it is getting rediculous!

Newark and Detroit are set on fire on the devils night. How is this a celebration.

10-31 is the day before Nov 1, which is all saints day. Meaning the evil spirits are flushed out on the 1st.

I recall being so hurt over my pumpkin smashed one year. Now Ild smash a few if I did not get caught. Giving kids candy? Why not give then a gift certificate for dental care- it is kinda mean if you think about it.

I had a neighbor as a kid always gave out religios paphlets with candy. Another that told trickor treaters they did not celebrate the day.

Recently- some countries have blasted halloween as American commericialism.

In this town we have a parade. Sort of dumb.

Lets hear your thoughts. The good the bad the ugly.

IMO the real meaning is lost on Halloween as much as Christmas. It cheapens the true essense of holidays.

I do not think holidays are cheapened. They are, just what they are - just fun.

Especially halloween. Its a time to dress up and be silly, so what? Yes these holidays are all covers of some other pagan/christian whatever insert spiritual connection here* day - but myself, I see them as seperate. I celebrate and have fun and I also take the other elements more seriously. You can take both - the humorous and the serious...

But holidays in the end are only as cheap as you make it yourself...

Since I am no longer young enough to go door to door begging for Reeses Peanut Butter cups and I live in the middle of no-where and get zero trick or treaters........its just another over blown Hallmark holiday. I ignore it completely.

    If I were to be struck by either Bill Gates, or a winning lottery ticket, my front yard would be designed with Halloween in mind.

    As for it being a pagan holiday, people who have a problem with that should look up where we get the word "Easter." It doesn't come from the Bible.

    When I was very young, we lived briefly in a small Indiana town where Halloween was a week-long celebration with a parade, a Vincent Price film festival at the only theater and a different traditional prank for each night of the week. Some older cousins dragged me along to throw dried corn on front porches, but not if old people lived in that house, because they might get hurt. There were lessons with the costumes and candy.

I like Halloween a lot, but don't really celebrate it too much anymore. When I live somewhere a bit bigger than where I am now, I will probably do the costume thing, and enjoy it a lot more again.

Yes, it's a pagan holiday, but so are the dates for Christmas and Easter. It's more what you do with it that makes it have anything to do with religion.

I am a Christian, but I will still dress my kids up, take them for candy, and let them enjoy it. It's the adults that always take the fun out of things, the kids only know it's a night to dress up, have fun, and get candy from people. Just let them be kids, they have to grow up quick enough nowadays anyways.

We are in a new home this year. Much smaller town than we are used to. The neighbors tell us they get about 15 kids on a good year.
Our house is decorated more so than any in the neighborhood already. People have already stopped by to gawk. The people in town know that we have went all out.
I imagine that number of 15 will go up. Not by thousands but it will go up this year.
Halloween is for the children in all of us. Who cares if it is a religious holiday or not? It is simply fun.

As are many christians holidays are just transformations of pagan holidays, Halloween/ Samhain was no diffrent. This is the season that the ancients said the vail is thin and that the passage between those that are living and those that have passed on. In trying to teach the pagans the new faith, the Christian priests (actually the Catholics) brought the holiday All Saint's Day that happens on Nov. 1st. The celts were known to have a huge gathering the night of the last harvest, and this would go on for three days. During this time, many would carve turnups. (I guess turnups in Ireland are as big as a small pumpkin here.) When the irish came to the new lands, they couldn't find turneps large enough to place candles in but found pumpkins fit the job better.

As for how the name Halloween came about, that is simple. Since the pagans had an evening celebration, the catholics to had one and called it All Hallow Eve....ok now say that three times fast....and you get....Halloween. (joking)

i just wanted to share, but i truely believe it is a wonderful season for all. Give thanks for the harvest, have fun in the costumes, and when having dinner set an extra plate for anyone who might be visiting. :D

I personaly consider myself to be agnostic. I like to know the roots and meaning of the holidays (thanks much CrazyC) but that does not mean that i will celebrate just for that reason. to me here are the meaning of the holidays

New Years: excuse to party.
Easter: Time for gathering with friends and family. The date is kept because of the remoteness of other "gathering" holidays. Also a time for kids to be kids (Easter egg hunt)
Memorial day: just as it was made for, a day to give respect for the men and women, our brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters, that have fought and died, been severly injured, or came back to us healthy, for our right to sit here and bitch and moan about our government, and so that we may live our lives the way that we want
Independance day: another "gathering" holiday, also to celebrate our wonderful country, weither you agree with the politics or not
Labor Day: just another excuse for management to get a day off while the Laborers labor.
Halloween: Time for kids to be kids, adults to be kids, play a few mild pranks, and have some fun
Thanksgiving: another "gathering" holiday
Christmas: see thanksgiving.

We get 200 or more Trick or Treaters on Halloween, that's close to 10% of our town's population...I don't care how much they commercialize it, we have a blast. We decorate and drag out all the special effect gizmos we have. It's such a big deal we invite people over (down, up, whatever) to help. I don't mind giving the rugrats candy..as long as they don't mind me scaring the crap out of them when the opportunity comes up. Of course I do manage to scare a parent or two as well....collateral damage I guess...muhahahahah.

I love halloween. :) It's a blast. I get to be in a halloween wedding this year and I'm so totally looking forward to it. I love getting my kiddos dressed up. It's fun to pretend you're something that you aren't. :)

A friend of mine got married on Halloween.   He was in my Toastmaser club.   He was Japanese (Shinto) and his wife was hispanic (pentacostal).   Both were RN's at the Hosp my wife worked at.   He came to me and said Ken (he knows I can do jokes well) I want you to do somthing at the reception. The wedding is going to be straight though.   I had never met the bride.

Worked for me. We went to the wedding (at a Methodist church) and it was really nice.   Then everyone gathered at the Holiday Inn in a different town for the reception. The Toastmaster (yes we had a Toastmaster as the Toastmaster of the Reception) and I had worked out my cues.   On cue I went to the restroom and put on an old sun dress of my wifes and some flip flops.   No I didn't shave my mustache off or shave my legs and I am hairy.   I passed my clothes out to my wife and was ready to go.

On cue I went into the reception and started calling the Grooms name.   I could be heard over the crowd of 300 Dr's Nurses and their families.   It got so quiet   LOL

I grabbed hold of the Groom and took him behind the microphone because he couldn't project over that large of a crowd.   I flirted with him, played with his ear, then looked down at his wife who was in shock and said - I know that this is your wedding night and he needs to spend it with you, but he promised to spend tommorrow night with me. Would you make sure he is there?    LOL   She almost had a heart attack.   Then I blamed it all on my wife (everyone knew her). and went back and changed back into my suit.

During the money dance, I told the bride that it was hubby that put me up to it.   She got even in her own time.   After that I played Santa to their kids every year until I had to leave town for medical reasons.

Crazy c, you are correct and it's pronounced "sow-in".
My parents were married on Halloween (Both Irish) and I also have Irish citizenship myself so I've heard a few of the old tales.
