Also- how is Halloween- a pagan holiday connected to America. Which is more of a Judeo-Christian founded nation.

So is Christmass, Easter, and St Patty's day. Thanks to the Catholic church, these pagan holidays were merely converted and comprimised into christianity celebrations.

Anyhow, I think holloween is a great day. It starts Fall on the right track and inspires creativity. Todays kid putting on a little white make up and some fake blood just might be your next Sci Fi Big Movie special effects artist.

As for commericialism, that goes for every damn holiday now.

Pope Gregory if memory seerves me in order to promote the spread of Christianity through converting pagans reset the holiday calander so that they would fall on or around a major pagan holiday.

That's why Easter is calcualted on a lunar cycle, why Christmas is just after the winter solstice, why All Saints Day corresponds to Samhain. You'll note that often the theme of the holiday was taken into account when resetting the holiday calander.

It was all part of a plan to make conversion of the pagans easier.

Easter: Time for gathering with friends and family. The date is kept because of the remoteness of other "gathering" holidays. Also a time for kids to be kids (Easter egg hunt)

I agree with Robin Williams here.  I dont really understand the connection between some guy rising from the dead being celebrated by painted eggs. rabbits, and candy.

Memorial day: just as it was made for, a day to give respect for the men and women, our brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters, that have fought and died, been severly injured, or came back to us healthy, for our right to sit here and bitch and moan about our government, and so that we may live our lives the way that we want

Exactly.

Labor Day: just another excuse for management to get a day off while the Laborers labor.

I get paid time and a half on Labor day, and if I work 2 days in the week after Labor day I get paid for an extra full days work (8 hours) the next paycheck.

But then I belong to one of the strongest labor unions on the planet.

Enjoy your weekends, holidays, benefits if you have them, and eight hour work days, and give thanks to the labor movements in the United States who fought (and sometimes died) to give them to you.

Halloween: Time for kids to be kids, adults to be kids, play a few mild pranks, and have some fun
Thanksgiving: another "gathering" holiday
Christmas: see thanksgiving.

Exactly.

To me, holidays are what you make of them.

I actually dont need a special holiday to act juvenile, goof off, and play some pranks.

But that is just me and I could be wrong.

I can't verify the pope at the top of my head but your memory seems to be serving you pretty damn well. What's your secret?
