Someone posted this question on a political board I participate in. I found the question quite interesting but the partisan nature of such a board made it impossible to get any non zealot type comments so I thought I would try it here since there are many different political views and levels of passion.

So would you vote for someone strictly based on party even though you like the other candidate better?

The reason why I ask this on a personal level because I was thinking about the Presidential election in 2008 and currently I want to vote for a certain party’s candidate no matter who but there are probably going to be two people running from the other party who I like and admire and if one were to actually get the nomination it would really confuse my thought process.

For me...

I wouldn't care if they were Independant, Democratic, or Republican.

If they had the same views as me, on an individual basis...then I would vote for whoever fit that part of me.

But if nobody really strikes my interest on an indivual level...then I'll vote for either the liberal part of the party, or none at all.

well, i don't vote, but...if i did...it would be for a poor person that really cares about people over their own greed.

I always vote for the candidate, not the party.

The only problem is which lesser of to evils to choose from.

I lived in Texas when Bush was Governor and Gore was VP.  Bush accomplished quite alot as Governor and the partisanship in Texas seemed on the wane.  Gore on the otherhand talked a good talk, but didn't produce and actually said dumber things that Bush did at the time.

So, in 2000, it was Bush vs. Gore - not much of a choice, but I saw both candidates in action in previous years and Bush accomplished more positive things than Gore.

In 2004, it was Bush vs. Kerry - Kerry is so far left in comparison to Bush being to the right.  Basically, Bush was more moderate than Kerry and since I distrust anyone that is so fanatically slanted either left or right - it was Bush again.

I would like a competent Moderate that could balance fiscal responsibility and yet still make sure we had environmental concerns addressed.  I'd like to see welfare overhauled to make sure the people the need the money were the ones getting the money, not the people skimming by off "free" money.

Anyone proposing big government programs is out - government has shown itself poorly adept at managing anything.  The only thing that government does well is spend money (notice I didn't say spend money wisely)  I'd like to see the tax laws changed to balance out the tax receipts and remove loopholes for special interests.

I'd like to see someone who had their interests in line with what the country needs instead of what their party or political base wanted.  So basically, I'll be voting for the lessor or two evils again.

No, but that's easy for me, because I have a way of disliking every goddamned candidate the Republicans come up with.  I'm in the state of Santorum, you know.

At this point yes, I'd vote for The Constitution Party or The America First Party as I'm sick to death of both Dems and Repubs.
They've simply both been in too long and I don't like having only an "either or" choice.
If it boils down to Mc Cain vs Clinton I'll definately go third party as I don't like either one of those two.
I don't care if it's Pee Wee Herman running against them he'll get my vote.
Let's face it, Washington really does need an enema and if we keep putting in the same "establishment people" in office we'll just get more of the same. More lobbyists making more laws good for big business and bad for The People.
I did and still do like H. Clinton's idea about a National Healthcare System for U.S. Citizens. I just don't want "the govt." running it!
The last thing we need is another huge beauracracy.
Personally, I don't like H. Clinton and would never vote for her.
The same goes for Mc Cain after his and Kennedy's "Amnesty" plan for illegal aliens.
Watching those two run would be like watching an Iran/Iraq war. I'd want BOTH of them to lose.
Democrat/Republican = "How can we screw the Taxpayers now?"

While I generally stay within the party of my choosing, there have been occassions that I have gone outside of that and voted for a particular candidate.

It depends on the position they are running for. From what i understand, there are positions that actually come with more positions of hiring. So if i want my party to have a louder voice, i vote for the man with that power even if i don't agree with all his stand points. Though i usually look at the whole person first, and will usually vote accordingly.

I too am a party voter.  Rarely do I care for the other's canidate anyway.

I don't vote for a party so much as I vote against the other one.

However, I could imagine the possibility of voting for McCain if he were to get the Republican nomination. For other republican candidates, I would only vote for having them lined up and shot.

Yeah that is the one guy I cannot believe I would not vote for but as CrazyC pointed out so nicely that my confusion comes into the whole power structure and who has control of the agenda and hiring.

Personally though I cannot believe, unless pure desparation happens, that the base will let him win the nomination. If it had been a fair fight in 2000, he would have kicked Bush's ass!

I always vote for the canidate, unless it's something where for some reason I am not familiar with either one running.  This happens a lot for local, city elections for me.  When it comes to the bigger offices, President, Gov., State Rep, etc.. I vote for the person.  I do hate when it comes down to picking the lesser of two evils, which I feel I have had to do the last two pres. elections.  I am hoping for two great ones this time, that I can actually vote in because I think they are going to be great at the job.

i agree with someone who posted earlier, i really do believe if youre voting for a democrat or republican youre really not voting for the candidate.  Really i think that it might be rare for them to come up with a candidate that would  be much different than any other candidate they were to come up with.  Im very much in favor of third parties because then just maybe youd be voting for the person and that persons personal morals and convictions and not for one of the ruling parties and their party agendas.

I would vote for the person I felt would do the best job.  Lacking that I would vote for the one I felt would do the least damage.  I voted for Kerry in the last presidential election because Bush scares the crap out of me.  Given his track record so far I think there is reason to be scared. 

Like Popeye I'm about done with the offerings from the two party system.  Often its a choice between bad and worse and the voter is left to try to figure out which is which. 

I don't know if a 3rd party candidate would be more in touch with what is going on in this country but its a guarantee that the dems and reps are not. 

The thing is, the elections are really up to each one of us.  If you don't take the time to learn what each candidate is about, if you go and vote because their name sounds familiar, or just because they have been in office for a long time, you are part of the problem.

I vote for the person i think will do the best job, unless i am not familiar with them, then i vote the party.
However, in WA State now you don't have a choice in the primaries, you have to vote for a candidate in your party. I think that sucks.[:'(]

I'd say no. I want the best person for the job, and picking an inferior candidate isn't the way to get that.
