I think it is sweet, and it always brings a smile to my face.  I think it's sad that I get caught off guard by it, rather than used to it.  Maybe that is what makes me notice it more, and appreciate it so much.

I open the door for everyone.  I go out of my way to do so sometimes.  I smile, and sometimes if they're smiling big when they smile back, then I will give a cutesy chivalrous bow with a hand flourish.  It gets me some funny looks, but generally a very friendly smile at the very least.

I and all my friends were raised that way.
Most kids in the 40's, 50's and 60's had manners.
It's sad but you don't seem to see that in  the young kids these days and a lot of them have foul mouths on them too.

What do ya do when an old bastard opens the door for you.....?????

I smile and say, "Thanks, you old bastard! Your mama done raised you right, too!"

My dad and brothers open doors for people.
I do too, we also go out of our way to help the elderly or people having a difficult time going in/out of stores too.

We don't consider it a biggie when we all do it, however I do appreciate when a door is held open for me and I acknowledge that person.

It's just simply good manners and common courtesy.  They never go out of style.

but...I went to the store this evening and as I was nearing the door, a man opened the door for me, smiled at me, and said ..how are you this evening?......

Wow!  There really are gentlemen out there!  And I just wanted to say, thank you to all of the men out there who still have some nice manners....

Can ya tell its been awhile since a man opened a door for me..lol

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha...when I was 26 or so I was at the post office.  My Momma raised me to be a gentleman and as I'd so often done a katrillion times before, I held open the door behind me for the 30 something woman following next in line.

Within the next 4 seconds I was never and have never been more astounded and slack jawed in my life.

She proceeded to tell me "I can open my OWN Goddamned door, thank you very much!!!"

I smiled and very politetely said "Fuck you very much".

I like the ones that see you doing the door holding...and offer to take over so you too can go about your business.

I think that common courtesy is all fine and dandy, but I feel guilty when I open the door for a woman or light her cigarette........especially in PUBLIC.  Somewhere, behind all of those "chivalrous" actions, is a tacit, unanimous agreement that women "need" to be taken care of in some way, shape or form.  Now, I'm of the mindset that the womenfolk are strong enough to take good care of themselves, without the "omnipotent" presence of big, strong macho- men to hold doors, open jars, and do other, so-called masculine things.  Acting like a gentleman makes me feel like a big doofus, unless I'm having really hot, nasty sex with the recipient of said actions.

Just because a fellow citizen happens to possess different plumbing down below, doesn't mean that they should receive preferential treatment.  I hold the door for EVERYONE; pretty girls don't get favors from Yours Truly.  Why?  Hot women are treated like gold everywhere that they go...........and unless you're fucking me, you ain't gettin' the red carpet treatment until you come around to the dark side.
