Anybody else out there fearing the march of time?

Happy Birthday!

As for me, so far my 40s are the best yet! It just keeps gettin' better (really).

Although I will admit that 25 messed with my head a bit. A quarter of a century. Ouch.

But the rest have been pretty kewl.

sweetpettjenny -> RE: How'd I get to be so old? (2/1/2005 5:10:58 PM)

i actually had a bad time turning 30...probably because i had my children young and my life is flying by......... i just turned 33 and this spring i will be the mom of a teenybopper....life will be interesting i see her moods changing into teeny time.

dixiedumpling -> RE: How'd I get to be so old? (2/2/2005 11:53:26 AM)

Thanks, MizSuz.

I think I fear the march of time because I don't feel like I've done much with my few moments on earth. I didn't have children and nor have I published the great American novel. When I read the celebrity birthdays in the paper, my first thought is "Older than I" or "Younger than I". Quite frankly, if they're much younger than I am, I don't know who the hell they are. I guess what everyone wants is to be remembered, and not for a bad reason. When I'm gone, I want someone to miss me and miss what I contributed to the community.

People already will miss you and your contributions. Sometimes in life we don't see what is right in front of us until it is too late.
I'd suggest you ask yourself what you want to accomplish. Whether small or large, make the list. Start on the smaller tasks and get them accomplished. Don't overwhelm yourself at once. Take it slow and easy.
When I met Doug he considered himself a loser because he was almost 40 and had not owned a house yet. So, I said then go buy one. Which he did.
I don't understand why people make it sound so impossible.
I've achieved everything I wanted to in life and then some. Do I have more to go, sure. Today I just don't know which direction that is.
I certainly won't regret anything if I were to find out my life was ending tomorrow.

kyakitten -> RE: How'd I get to be so old? (2/2/2005 10:23:49 PM)

Ya know, I got carded a couple times this year too, but by now that's just silly. I think the real achievement comes on the days I can look in the mirror and feel proud to look my age.

THE PERKS OF BEING OVER 50

1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you.

2. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first.

3. No one expects you to run - anywhere.

4. People call at 9 PM and ask, "Did I wake you?"

5. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.

6. There is nothing left to learn the hard way.

7. Things you buy now won't wear out.

8. You can eat dinner at 4 P.M.

9. You enjoy hearing about other peoples operations.

10. You get into heated arguments about pension plans.

11. You have a party and the neighbors don't even realize it.

12. You no longer think of speed limit's as a challenge.

13. You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into
the
room.

14. You sing along with elevator music.

15. Your eyes won't get much worse.

16. Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay
off.

17. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national
weather
service.

18. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember
them
either.

19. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size.

20. You can't remember who sent you this list.

Chapter 1: GAMES FOR WHEN WE ARE OLDER

1. Sag, You're it.

2. Pin the Toupee on the bald guy.

3. 20 questions shouted into your good ear.

4. Kick the bucket.

5. Red Rover, Red Rover, the nurse says Bend Over.

6. Doc Goose.

7. Simon says something incoherent.

8. Hide and go pee.

9. Spin the Bottle of Mylanta.

10. Musical recliners.

Chapter 2: SIGNS OF MENOPAUSE

1. You sell your home heating system at a yard sale.

2. Your husband jokes that instead of buying a wood stove, he is using
you
to heat the family room this winter. Rather than just saying you are
not
amused, you shoot him.

3. You have to write post-it notes with your kids' names on them.

4. The Phenobarbital dose that wiped out the Heaven's Gate Cult gives
you
four hours of decent rest.

5. You change your underwear after every sneeze.

6. You're on so much estrogen that you take your Brownie troop on a
field
trip to Chippendale's.

Chapter 3: SIGNS OF WEAR

"OLD" IS WHEN..... Your sweetie says, "Let's go upstairs and make love"
and
you answer, "Pick one, I can't do both!"

"OLD" IS WHEN..... Your friends compliment you on your new alligator
shoes
and you're barefoot.

"OLD" IS WHEN..... A sexy babe catches your fancy and your pacemaker
opens
the garage door.

"OLD" IS WHEN..... Going bra-less pulls all the wrinkles out of your
face.

"OLD" IS WHEN..... You don't care where your spouse goes, just as long
as
you don't have to go along. (not my red ink)

"OLD" IS WHEN..... You are cautioned to slow down by the doctor instead
of
by the police.

"OLD" IS WHEN..... "Getting a little action" means I don't need to take
any
fiber today.

"OLD" IS WHEN..... "Getting lucky" means you find your car in the
parking
lot.

"OLD" IS WHEN..... An "all-nighter" means not getting up to pee

I view middle age as being 60-65, myself.

And yes, I relaize that means I consider a life-span to 120 to be achievable.

There already ARE folks reaching that age. I expect by the time I die, if I'm not cut shot, or at least by the time I hit my 80's and 90's that 120 will be commonplace.

It's already common enough that it doesn't make the news. I remember as a kid when someone in the US hit 100, there was nation-wide reports of it. 100 doesn't even make a dent inthe news these days, because so many are hitting past that mark.

65 as middle age is of a different generation's mindset, and I suspect that will only be more the case as the years go by.

Thinking as I do, I had no issues with hitting thirty, and I'll be thirty-five this year. No problem with that at all. hehe

I cannot even fathom growing that old. What exactly would we do until that ripe old age? Yes, I know it is what we strive for as a nation when it comes to our health.
Personally, 70 would be perfectly find with me. My goal's are a bit lower.

You may think differently when you reach my age. I certainly want to live past 70, that's only 12 more years.

Have you achieved everything you've wanted to in life? Personally by the time I hit your age I will be ready to be gone.
I've played hard in my lifetime. I'm already in a position to where I work out not to get into shape but to control my pain on a day to day basis without meds.
Both feet have issues...both knees. Chronic headahces...these things are only going to get worse in time.
I honestly cannot even imagine 70. I sure hope I don't have to live that long to live it.
When the quality of life goes downhill. What's left? So what if you have your mind.

I'm not sure how to answer this Gloria. There are still lots of things left that i want to achieve, witness, and enjoy. The main one being i want to watch my daughters as they progress in life (they are 25 and 28), and hopefully enjoy grandchildren some day and watch them grow up as well.
I want to shoot par on a golf course some day but that is unlikely although i am still improving and shot a 78 last summer. Some of our best golfing buddies are well over 70. I want to do a lot more travelling, mainly around the US and Canada, and also take some more cruises. I want to keep learning and trying new things in this lifestyle as i find it very satisying and exciting. I want to continue to make new friends both online and in real life. I think i have a lot to live for and hope i can keep contributing time and knowledge to the organizatons i am involved with also.

I am sorry that you are in so much pain all the time. Maybe that would make me feel differently. Hubby and i both have joint problems but right now we can live with them and when we can't we'll have them replaced. Anyway, i'm sure not in any rush to leave this world.

Proud,
I'm not in a rush either persay. It is just at 18 when I blew out my ankle for the third time playing volleyball for school. I sort of knew then that I'd have problems later on in life. That was by far not the last time I hurt it either.
I moreless just look at it from a pain standpoint. When it gets too bad will I be able to cope? I refuse to take any sort of narcotics. My body is a temple. Always has been and always will be.
Which is the primary reason I can't even imagine being 130 let alone 70. I've been offered operations already to correct my feet. Declined..because of a one year rehabilitation period. I figure when it gets that bad. I'll do it. Right now I can cope. So essentially the same as you are.

I guess it stems from the fact that all the elders in my family were far more active than even us kids.

Quality of life? Man they were living it UP. And some still are.

My family tends to live to in high 90's. My grandparents - in their mid to late 70's - were playing live gigs in a country/folk band for their church, various events, etc.

They volunteered to be emergency relayers since they were avid ham operators, as well as taught folks to get their ham licenses.

Grandad died a few years ago - but he was pretty active up to the end just about. He and grams knew more about computers than *I* did up til about 5 years ago - they were the people teaching me to code and do engineering stuff when I was a kid.

Grams is still really active, has a lot going on, and prolly is still more productive in a day than I am. LOL.

My great aunts made it to their late 90's. Hell one of them was freaking DRIVING her tank of a chrystler at 93! They finally had to PRY the thing out of her fingers - scaryyyyyy!

She never had an accident - I just think they started getting nervous about her age behind a wheel lol, cuz even my mom's generation admit she was still driving fine - which amazed them.

I dunno, they just really showed me life can begin at 65 - if you plan right and have the right outlook, and health is somewhat in your favor.

So I guess since I saw such an awesome display of quality of life and how much FUN they were having *my* entire life - I don't associate old age with losing one's quality of life necessarily.

Mandalin -> RE: How'd I get to be so old? (2/11/2005 8:11:29 PM)

I'll be 40 in a couple of months. It doesnt seem like I'm 40 already, feels like I should still be in my 20's, and I'm only reminded that I'm not, when my daughter's dont want me hanging around with them. 35 hit me hard, that's when I found my first gray hairs, thank god for hair color! Wrinkles at 40 will be a bit more of a challange though, but as long as I'm still healthy, I'm not going to cry about them now.

I am even closer to 60. If i were to be able to do it all over again i would certainly start my BDSM journey at a much younger age than i did, i was 54 when i discovered all this.
