Yes, there's something to that, but honestly I'm starting to wonder what's been going on with their drafts under Tony Dungy.  The Colts have so much offensive firepower that they don't need a great defense; they just need an average defense--and he hasn't even been able to put that together after all these years at the helm.  It won't be too many more years before Manning, Harrison, and company (most of whom Dungy INHERITED) all start getting over the hill.  If he hasn't upgraded his defense by then, they're never going to win anything.

Perhaps if Peyton Manning hadn't been so greedy with his contract, the Colts could afford some better defensive players under the salaary cap. He could learn something from Tom Brady, who is a bit less demanding in contract negotiations because he knows he's already making more money than he can ever spend so he'd rather take less in order to have a better TEAM around him.

Saints beat the Cowboys  was a very good game for Saints fans lol

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/11/2006 3:23:24 PM)

The Saints have a lot to be proud of.  Sean Payton has turned that team around, with some help of course.  I'm glad to see Drew Brees having such a great year.  I was disappointed when the Chargers let him go.  But it looks like he's found a new home.

uh huh. I think he did upgrade the defense from being pathetic to being mediocre, but everyone expected him to get it up where he had Tampa Bay. That makes me suspect that he got credit for that defense when it was Monte Kiffen who REALLY made it. It is still a surprise to me that Indy's defense hasn't gotten better, and if it hasn't happened by now I don't think it will.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/11/2006 4:44:19 PM)

Indianapolis has the worst rushing defense in the NFL by any measure.  The numbers are amazing.  They've given up 2294 rushing yards, which is more than 400 more than the next-worst team (Cleveland).  They've also given up 5.4 yards per carry, again the worst number in the league by a wide margin.  Oh, and 17 rushing TD's--worst again.

Their pass defense is better.  They've given up only 2036 yards passing, which is second-best in the NFL (or will be, anyway, after Chicago plays tonight)--but that's only because people are running all over them.  A more accurate measure would be the opposing passers' overall rating, which in their case is 81.3, good for 17th place.  They're also 29th in the league in sacks, with just 19.

So they have a mediocre pass defense combined with an execrable rush defense.  Overall, I think that sucks.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/11/2006 8:35:33 PM)

I'm starting to think Devin Hester is one of the best kick returners in history.

Edited to add: Oh, one thing I meant to say about the Colts game.  For some reason, the Jacksonville Jaguars seem to have an immense home-field advantage.  Take a look at their week-by-week results:

http://www.nfl.com/teams/schedule/JAC

They're 6-1 at home, including some massive victories (41-0 over the Jets, 26-10 over the Giants, and 44-17 over the Colts).  On the road, they're not the same team: 2-4 (including a 27-7 drubbing by Houston and a loss to Washington, which is one of the worst teams in the NFL this year).

So I'm not saying that the Colts are going to be OK, but you can imagine that the result would have been a little different if the game had been played in Indianapolis.

Yet another thing I meant to say: Vanderjagt has always been overrated.  He's a lifelong domer, and those guys are never as good as their stats.  In the playoffs, you need a kicker who can get it done in bad weather.

Dungy was brought in as a good defensive coach.  So far he's sat on his laurels and done nothing much.  He's been here long enough that our defense should have improved drastically, or at least a little.  Instead we look abysmal half the time.  We are simply outcoached much of the time.

And what was so sad about the game against Jax was exactly what you said, that we don't need a really strong defense because our offense is so good.  But our offense blew chunks on Sunday.  In which case, we're really just not very good all around... which is ridiculous, because we are good.  I just don't think the Colts know how to deal with losing.  We're used to winning and once we hit a bad spot, we can't pull ourselves out of it.

Oh, and don't get me started on Tom Brady. <cough douchebag cough>  [;)]

I laugh with glee every time Vanderjagt's name is mentioned.  At least now I do.  I cursed last year.  Vanderjagt can't take pressure.  He's great when you don't need him, and as soon as you do, he buckles.

I think it's great that he missed his first game against his old team he played so poorly... poorly enough to get him cut.

Yep.  The true measure of a team is how well it can play in the elements.  Give me a snowy, wet, slippery football field any day - that is twue football!   [8D]

I felt exactly the same way when Vinitraitor missed  his first two field goals against us. < Pats> It actually softened the blow of being beaten by the Colts.
I don't want to see him cut tho, not that he ever would be. It's just a fan thing, when some one defects in the middle of the night to the enemy, you justlike to see them stumble a little.

Not to stir the pot NOMC, but you do know your QB and my QB are pretty good friends, right? They do dinner, they e mail each other regularly, yak on the phone, golf together get together socially and just hang out together.. They even worked together to petition the league to allow visiting QBs to bring and use their own footballs.

I remember hearing Peyton Manning talking about that football situation.

About Devin Hester, he is amazing, I don't know another word for it.  I would love for the Steelers to find a special teams play of that quality.  We could use him as we've had problems all season with fielding balls in punts/kickoff returns.

The Colts have injuries on the Defensive side of the ball.

DT Corey Simon, S Bob Sanders, CB Tim Jennings, DE Jonathan Welsh and DB Eric Hill have all had injuries. Simon's been out all year.

A coach cannot make up for missing personell.

Last year the Ravens were without Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Jonathan Ogden for major parts of the season, and that was a huge contributing factor to going 6-10. Look at Ben Roethelberger --- whose performance has slipped b/c of injuries.

In sum, I would not blame Dungy or Manning in particular.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (12/12/2006 10:18:18 AM)

If this were the first year that the Colts' defense was their Achilles heel, I'd be more sympathetic to the injury plea--but it's not.  Their defense has ALWAYS been their Achilles heel.  There's a certain pattern, year-in and year-out: the offense sparkles, and the defense sucks.  The coach was brought in to address that, and he hasn't done it.  The offense sparkled before he got there, remember?

We (the Colts) have had a great offense for a while now.  Until we can get something done about this defense though, we will never win a superbowl, there just isn't a way.  I think you can win games with an offense, but you have to have the whole package to win the big ones.  If we could at least stop a running play we might have a shot, that was just a sad performance.

Hmmmph !!  I am crushed by the unkind words expressed here by two of my football buddies.
I have no quick witted retort, no snappy comeback. But I will get over it, and when I do.....................................
