PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher is returning to the NFL — as an analyst on CBS' Sunday "The NFL Today" studio show.
Cowher resigned as the Steelers' coach last month following 15 seasons, and less than a year after winning the Super Bowl. He plans to spend more time with his family at their new home in Raleigh, N.C., but said working on the CBS show allows him to keep his ties to the league.

"I can still be part of it but not have it consume your life," Cowher said Thursday, speaking on a conference call.
Cowher sent mixed signals as to how long he plans to stay away from coaching

Tiki Barber left many New York Giants faithful wondering why their beloved running back would walk away from the game early. On Tuesday, he provided an answer.
Speaking with reporters after a Tuesday press conference, Barber called out Giants head coach Tom Coughlin for overplaying him, saying the resulting wear and tear on his body contributed to his decision to retire.

"Coach Coughlin is very hard-nosed, and I didn't get a lot of time off," Barber said, according to the New York Post. "(I) couldn't sit down and rest myself, and so it was a constant grind — a physical grind on me that started to take its toll.

Great news about Cowher.  That should be fun to watch.  Perhaps more Bill and less Shannon Sharpe, I could live with that.

Rating the college QBs:

This year's quarterbacks in the NFL draft have little in common, as each possesses different traits that attract the attention of scouts. It is a top-heavy group with a pair of prospects battling to be taken among the top 10 picks and three to five players fighting to be selected by the end of the draft's first day.

The evaluation of a quarterback starts with watching or looking for consistency in a number of areas: setup, footwork, throwing motion, accuracy and then competitiveness and intangibles.

A quick release is an ideal trait in today's NFL game, since teams are rushing the passer with much more frequency, but the one characteristic that cannot be pinpointed in game film or a scouting report is the potential to be the future leader of a franchise.

The San Diego Chargers are leaning toward a new head coach and it's the man everyone thought was going to be head coach of Dallas.
FOXSports.com has learned that the Chargers are talking to Norv Turner as if they are looking to hire him as their head coach. Sources contend that Turner is leaning toward hiring Ted Cottrell, a long-time defensive NFL coach, to run the Chargers defense. Cottrell worked in the league office this past season but is one of the best minds in the league in running a 3-4 scheme.

Oddly, earlier in the day based off of different information, Rex Ryan appeared to be the leading candidate to get the job. What or if anything happened to change that remains to be seen.

Bridget Moynihan pregnant with Tom Brady's child ! What really makes me laugh is the local fans who are saying  they thought he was the clean cut type, etc. Ummm, he went with her for three years, maybe it's my evil mind, but I kinda figured they might have had sex a time or two.[8|]
Anyhoo:
Mazal Tov to Tom and Bridget !

Asante Samuel gets franchised. Smart move by the Patriots. Not alot of CB entering free agency this year. And Samuel would definately been gone if they hadn't tagged him.

Congrats to Tom Brady!

You know, the franchise tag is controversial.  A lot of players do not like it.  Because it is a one year contract and they would prefer some job security.  It was a concession made by the union to the ownership in order to gain some other things.
I wasn't surprised they slapped it on Asante, he's a great player.

Ty Law and Lawyer Milloy must be fuming, though maybe Law was already getting top 5 money and wanted more . . . I can't remember.

I jsut recall Law and Milloy wanting the big $$s and the Pats saying "it's been nice knowing ya" and letting them seek greener pastures, so this is a change for them.

maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (2/19/2007 2:15:06 PM)

I am pretty sure they couldn't put a tag on Law, cuz in 2005 Vinitieri was under the franchise tag for the Patriots. Besides Law was very upfront about needing to " feed his family" and wanting to go where the bigger bucks were. And the Pats just weren't willing to match the offers he was getting. If you remember, he had a pretty severe injury the year his contract ran out, and couldn't play in the SB. I think NE was gunshy about offering huge dollars when his status was iffy.

I agree Katy, I would want the extension also. I don't think the Pats could match the offers that would be out there for Samuel this year. He's coming off a Pro Bowl type year and many teams are hungry for CBs and the pickings are slim. If he continues to perform at the level he did this year.. I am hoping the Pats are willing to pay the man the money. But you know how they are.[&:]
This is the first year he has played at a high level, maybe BB and Pioli are tagging him to make sure it isn't a fluke, before giving him the big money ?  < well, I can hope >

Agreed on Samuel, he's developing into one of the best CBs in the league.

And the Colts have franchised Freeney. Same deal as Samuel, I think they had to do it. Indy is going to have cap troubles this year, even if Manning restructures his bonuses. He is suppsosedly converting his roster bonus into signing bonus, and saving the Colts about 8 million. Even with the restructuring they are going to have a hard time. Here is a list of their upcoming FA:

Restricted Free Agents:
- Jim Sorgi
- Gilbert Gardner
- Bo Schobel
- Jake Scott
- Jason David
- Ryan Lilja
- Josh Thomas
Unrestricted Free Agents:
-Ricky Proehl
-Terrance Wilkins
-Rob Morris
-Nick Harper
-Domenick Rhodes
-Rocky Boiman
-James Mungro
-Dan Klecko
-Cato June
-Dwight Freeney>> tagged

What a good year for guys like Rhodes, June, Harper and Morris to become FA.. Just coming off a SB win and all.

Out of that list, I'd try to keep Lilja, Rhodes, and June, the rest matter, but aren't "must haves", in my mind.
