A quick dip into the college ranks, good news for us 'Horns fans:

AUSTIN, Texas – On Feb. 7 Mack Brown signed a top-five recruiting class. But since recruiting really never ends for a college football coach, three days later he hosted Texas' annual "junior day."

Every school runs a junior day, where it invites some of the best football-playing 11th graders to campus and shows them the weight room, trophy case and a Miss Corn Festival or three. With any luck, the kid agrees to attend the school's summer football camp, where further evaluation and interaction will set up things for the fall and winter recruiting push where, if everything falls into place, he'll sign a letter of intent.

It's like the kickoff to the recruiting year.

Only this time, a funny thing kept happening to Brown. After recruits and their parents looked around, saw all the Heisman Trophies, all the national championships, all the smiling faces in the football office, the kids telling the Texas coach the same thing.

"I'm coming."

NEW YORK (AP) - Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was fined $100,000 by the NFL for wearing a cap during Super Bowl media day that promoted a sponsor not authorized by the league. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6702252  BOSTON (AP) - The New England Patriots and veteran cornerback Tory James have agreed to a one-year deal.
The 33-year-old will compete for playing time in a deep Patriots secondary, his agent Mark Bartelstein said Wednesday. James has played 11 NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals.  He had four interceptions last year with the Bengals and a career-high of eight in 2004.

The Patriots have a number of defensive backs, but franchise player Asante Samuel, an anchor on defense who recorded 10 interceptions last season, has not accepted the team's tender offer.

He said James was convinced by coach Bill Belichick's pitch and his past performance with veteran defensive players. The Patriots landed one of the best defensive free agents on the market this offseason, veteran linebacker Adalius Thomas from the Baltimore Ravens.

Here are five players we are leery of a week before the NFL draft.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6701908

The Greatest All-Time Draft Class

In 1957, the San Francisco 49ers used their first-round draft pick on Stanford quarterback John Brodie. It worked out very well: Brodie led the league in passing yards three times and when he finally hung up his cleats after 17 seasons in San Francisco, the 49ers retired his jersey.

But here's the most extraordinary thing about the 49ers choosing Brodie in 1957: If you were to make a list of the best players drafted that year, Brodie probably wouldn't even crack the Top 10. That 1957 draft class had such an abundance of talent that even today, 50 years later, no class has surpassed it. No matter what kind of football you like to watch, the 1957 draft class had something for you:

Sir thanks so much for the link.  my favorite were the top 25 QB's.  Noted that a couple of them were coaches such as Spurrier.  i had to agree with the top two.  Those would be the ones i had listed.

Hi minnetar. The one guy on those lists that makes me shake my head is Ki Jana Carter. He was a freak at Penn St. and it saddens me to this day that he got hurt before he even got going.

Yes, I remember Manning very well; one of the all time great Jayhawks, and he had a decent pro career too. I just checked his entry on Wikipedia out, what a title game he had against Oklahoma: "In Kansas's 83-79 victory over the University of Oklahoma in the 1988 NCAA Final, Manning recorded 31 points, 18 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocked shots".

No, actually I love football more than any other sport , college and pro. Then comes college hoops, major league baseball, the NBA, and hockey pulling up the rear.

Well, jump right on in, minnetar !! Post a whole bunch before Draft weekend ends. Me and Level have odds on how many pages this will go by that time. My bet is 73 pages < nudge, nudge.. wink, wink>
And Katy is having a thread party. She's in charge, after all she started this whole thing for us.

All I ask is that you remember to be kind if Coach Tomlin leads us in the wrong direction.

And Tiki keeps beating the same dead horse:

http://www.aolsportsblog.com/2007/04/17/the-neverending-story-tiki-barber-trashes-coughlin-again/

He also is goig to Va. Tech to cover the story for NBC news. Seems he grew up near there:

Pacman is going to appeal his suspension. The part of this story that cracked me up is  he was in Tunica, Miss. when they spoke to him. Guess he's a little too spooked to go back to Vegas to gamble.. or whatever he does there.

Okey Dokey, he gets a itsy bitsy pass, for now.
It will be an interesting season with all the new coaches. I'm not too worried about you guys, Katy, I think Tomlin has a solid core to work with. And unlike, say Marty S, Cowher left by choice and on good terms, so there won't be the locker room * struggle* between the players.

Well the possible most troublesome one now has fins, so the locker room is already much quieter.

Three top prospects for this year's NFL Draft have admitted to using marijuana, NFL team sources have confirmed to The Sports Xchange.
But sources also said the admissions should have little or no impact on their draft ratings.

The players cited are Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson, Clemson defensive end Gaines Adams and Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye. None of them tested positive for drugs in tests done by the NFL or in any of the random tests conducted in college by the NCAA.

Can You Win With Ginn?

Ohio State wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. makes football coaches and scouts respond the same way a wine connoisseur reacts to a new vintage. The reactions are strong, visceral and fall into two distinct camps: love or hate.
"He's a game changer," St. Louis Rams coach Scott Linehan said. "That's what we're all looking for in this league, the guy who can change the game with one play, strike fear in the defense. He has that kind of speed. Everybody saw the national championship game."
