Ya know, I have become very thankful for TO this season. I am counting on him to remain in his usual state of " ME-hood " and assuring we fans of poetic little snipets and antics. The way I figure it, if TO keeps true to form, maybe we can keep whatever antics Moss provides us in TO's shadows.
Of course if Rodney Harrison smacks Moss down a few times, we all can just sit back and enjoy our seasonal ride on the TO Railroad.

When I say good guys, I really mean great
By Paul Attner - SportingNews

Here's something we all need to remember: The NFL, like every other pro league, really is not overrun by sad folks like Pacman Jones and Chris Henry. Commissioner Roger Goodell is right to focus on cleaning up his sport and on making it uncomfortable, and even costly, to be a jerk. But it's time to do even more.

The overwhelming majority of pro football players are good guys. They have families, bills, concerns and a moral code that prods them to conduct themselves properly.

Most understand that they inherit certain responsibilities along with their attractive paychecks. They know fans are watching how they behave; they know any pathetic conduct will reflect not only on them but also on their team and league.

NO trainwrecks in Dallas! *I hope...*

For what it's worth, TO isn't the only one happy Parcell is gone; RB Julius Jones is saying things very much along the same lines. Which isn't surprising, going from a disciplinarian like Parcells to a player's coach like Phillips is a huge sea change for those guys.

I'm not the only fan who enjoys train wrecks!

That being said, I think that for many players, coming from a disadvantaged background and suddenly having fame and fortune, they are unprepared for it.  I'm not making excuses, but I can understand how unfortunate things can happen when kids don't have firm values.

Now bring on the malcontents...

caitlyn -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (5/15/2007 6:14:20 AM)

See ... you see these comments as ME-hood, and I see them as honest.

I'm a Cowboy fan that thinks maybe we got the wrong Bill in the Parcells/Belichick team. That grumpy old man was just past his prime, or maybe his prime was his assistants all along.

What did Bill really do for the Cowboys?

He used up years of picks, to build a defense that was just about as good as the one he had when he took over. He could have used a few picks, freshened up what we already had, and built an entire killer offensive line. On top of that, apparently our new coach still doesn't think we have the right tools on defense, since we just spent yet another first round pick on a pass rusher.

He passed on Steven Jackson, to take Julius Jones. Does anything else really need to be said on that topic?

Why did he take Anthony Fasano with a pretty high second pick? What does that guy give the team. The backs aren't big enough to play that one back offense. They tried it last year and had to start using a fullback. Now, if the team had Steven Jackson, it might be different.

Drew Bledslow. He needed benched, right about as soon as he got here.

Tony Romo. The team has a young quarterback that played well, but does make young quarterback mistakes. Lets have the head coach stand up in front of the media and talk about eating cheese and treating our young quaterback like he is running an 8th grade team. Thats a great plan!!!

CON-SERVE-A-TIVE ... as in, lets try to actually win occasionally, instead of playing not to lose.

So, TO learned nothing from Bill ... that's an honest opinion. Bill didn't do anything here but get marginal results spending a freaking TON of Jerry's money. I'm glad he is gone, and my guess is that there will be an immediate positive impact on the defense ... such as no longer having the team's best pass rusher dropping into coverage on passing downs (brilliant).

Oh, and Level, looks like your Longhorns snagged Riley Dodge for next year.

maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (5/15/2007 6:18:06 AM)

We had our fill of the Big Tuna here too. Plenty of the Pats players were more than happy to see him go. So I do agree with TO < choke, cough, gag >
There's a big difference between being a Disciplinarian and being a Dictator control freak. Look at Bilichick or even Dungy. Both are pretty firm disciplinarians, yet have the respect of their players and are not ego maniacal. OTOH, we then had Pete Carrol, the ultimate players coach at the time and it was disasterous.

I will tell you tho, I was very sad when the unholy trinity was dismantled. First, Vandy left, then Parcells. They were a great threesome. From a comic standpoint.

No, you're not the only one [:D], but again; let's have none in Dallas!

caitlyn:

I am a Pats fan first and an Eagles fan second. Having grown up outside Philly and spent many seasons at the old Vets stadium. TO used up any respect I had for him there.

I'm also not a Parcells fan, Somewhere in this thread I posted how much I disliked him and exactly what I thought of him. But I will cut him an itsy bitsy bit of slack on personel choices. The GM/owner of the Cowboys is the final word on those things, not even the great Bill Parcells could temper that man's ego and control.

I expect a good season from the Cowboys this year. I think there will be a better atmosphere in the locker room. Last year you had GM going head to head with the coach, the Coach weilding his authority like a saber over the players and general silent
* chaos * in the ranks.

I again disagree on the defensive picks Parcells made, caitlyn, but I did let out a "oh hell no!" when they passed up Jackson. It's turned out well enough, though, Jones and Barber are both rock solid RBs.

On Riley Dodge; Good! [:D] His dad is a local boy, and Riley looks to be possibly an even better QB. Here's a SI link to a story on him:

Level -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (5/15/2007 6:40:20 AM)

A couple of quickies, and I'm out of here for a bit:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Former Raiders offensive coordinator Tom Walsh described a play in a loss to the Browns in which a play-action pass was called and Randy Moss was asked to run a square-in on the weak side. The linebacker was sucked up inside by the fake, according to Walsh, and Moss was expected to run the in-route. As Walsh recalled it, "He runs a 9 [deep go] route. "Andrew Walter makes the play-fake and a huge hole opens up for Randy in the middle of the field but he's running down the sideline. When Randy gets to the sidelines, [wide receivers coach] Freddie Biletnikoff says, 'What were you doing?' "Randy told Fred, 'I didn't feel like running the 6 route on the dirt part of the infield.' That's the Randy I coached. There were some games where out of 28 plays he'd have 13 or 14 busts. Wrong routes, wrong reads. Dogging it. Whatever."
IRVING – Last season should have been one for Julius Jones to remember.
He finally ran for 1,000 yards in a season as he and his brother Thomas, who played with Chicago, became the first brothers to reach the milestone in the same year.
More importantly, he played in every game after injuries slowed him his first two seasons.
But Jones looks back and sees a season filled with yards and opportunities lost
A new NFL record set by Saints rookie !!!
< laughing my butt off here >
Short Stay: Free agent defensive tackle Walter Thomas had one of the shorter stays in Saints camp that anyone around the team could remember. The massive lineman lasted less than 15 minutes into the first practice Saturday before leaving the field and not being able to continue in the warm conditions.
"He had a brief career," said Payton. "It was a situation where from a conditioning standpoint he had a long way to go. I think it was 12 or 13 minutes into practice and he was struggling.
"He was a free agent we signed after the draft and you have no way of measuring where he's at from a conditioning standpoint."
I heard about this on PTI, this afternoon, but couldn't remember the guys name. PTI said he weighs about 350-375 lbs.
caitlyn -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (5/15/2007 8:02:41 PM)
To me, the funniest thing about TO, was watching the dropped ball thing grow legs of it's own. In one game, Romo hit him right on the ass with a pass before his head was even turned, and Joe Theisman just went off bitching about dropped passes. I was eating a chicken wing at the time, and laughed so hard I snapped the bone. [;)]
maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (5/15/2007 8:21:59 PM)
I remember that game ! LOL.
I'm still not sold on Romo, but he sure is a heck of alot better than Stone Legs. I think this season we will have a real picture of the QB he can or cannot be.
Don't get me wrong caitlyn, TO is talented. I use to love watching him run routes for Philly. He was graceful,quick and smart. I just didn't get to see alot of him in Dallas last year, we don't get many of those games here. Sadly he has made himself more valuable as an entertainment factor, rather than a player.
maybemaybenot -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (5/15/2007 8:30:34 PM)
kinda sorta football related. I love this quote:
"I'm extremely upset with the narrow-minded, pinheaded leadership of the Colts team and the NFL," said Diatlovich, who lives in the city. "It's inexcusable. All we're trying to do is say thank you."
http://cbs.sportsline.com/autoracing/story/10183244
I've always thought Polian is a pinhead too ! < sorry minnetar > But I think this Diatlovich guy is a jack ass.
caitlyn -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (5/16/2007 6:10:51 AM)
I will be shocked if Romo turns out to be a bust. I have no idea how he is taking so much heat for the last five games of the season. To me, as I watched the games, it looked like other teams were lining up to stop the run, and Dallas was running anyway. The defense had no pass rush, and no attempt to blitz at all. They couldn't stop anyone. By the time Romo got to work the passing game, they were behind and everyone knew they were going to throw. The other issue Romo has, is that neither of his backs are worth a fuck as pass blockers. They ended up putting in Oliver Hoyt a lot on passing downs, who is no threat to catch the ball.
Romo has some nice tools. He throws on the run very well and has a quick release. Fortunately, if he is a bust, they have two firsts to move up next year and take Brian Brahm or Chad Henne. I think Brian Brahm is going to be a stud. I don't think they will need to do that, and can instead take Darrin McFadden, and have a REAL running back on the team. (for Level). [;)]
I think TO had a pretty good year for what the Cowboys paid him. He is making a lot more this season, so will need to have a better season. All the drama ... what can you say. TO might as well cause some, because if he doesn't, the Dallas media will make it up anyway, and their fiction is usually worse than truth.
KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (5/16/2007 6:31:16 AM)
I do not think that Romo will be a bust.  I guess time will tell.  And his time is definitely this coming season.
