When I first contact someone I just write a brief message to show interest and start a conversation. What really grabs your attention in the first email

Hmm, it's a combination of things. I read the email, then look at the profile, and then go back and look at the email again.
I tend to like humor, so if there is a bit of humor in it, combined with a well written profile; it will grab my attention.

Two things grab my attention: showing they read my profile, and that they are respectful in their tone towards me. Other things, like, say...telling me to bow to their will or something, get my attention as well- generally in a pithy response asking them to please get a brain in the near future. Just sayin'.

Proof that they read my profile, a bit of humor and a sense of genuine interest in getting to know me.

One of the things that really grabbed me when my Daddy first wrote to me (aside from his intelligence and wit) was that he showed quite clearly that he had read my profile and was writing to me because of his impression of me based on my profile, not just because I was another available sub. He made a joke about something I had said and referenced things I had mentioned being interested in...and none of it seemed forced or contrived.
Of course, he refers to it as "Good Ol' Letter Number Seven", so maybe Im just an easy mark.
Edited for...oops.

For me, it matters whether they have taken the time to read my profile before sending me an e-mail.  i am pretty specific (some might even call it rude) as to what i seek.  i.e., my profile clearly states no long distance, if someone from Timbucktu (sp?) sends me an e-mail, depending on what is in said e-mail, i may or may not respond.

Comment on the profile or journal.  Don't send one of those "hi" messages.

Full sentences. I can't tell you how often I get sentence fragments that I am somehow supposed to put into a coherent thought. Without bita or benji to translate, forget it!

Of course, seeing that they know what I'm all about is important. I can't believe how many don't read the profile first. Surely it's less effort to read a profile and then send a directed message, rather than 10 blind ones?

(I suppose the respect and humour are good too...)

While I dont send out a lot of emails, the approach I generally take involves the following.

1)  Read their profile, making note of "GO AWAY YOU HIDEOUS MALE PERSON YOU, I AM COLLARED, A LESBIAN, A SPACE ALIEN, WHATEVER" sorts of comments.  Any of those, I move on.

2) If I find something interesting about their profile, I will comment on in my email to her.

3) I tend to avoid pontificating about myself; I would rather show interest in her.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

I never thought I would feel compelled to point this out to somebody, but...

It looks like the only way you will hook up with a submissive is to type one-handed.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

oh yes, Ma'am.  Complete, intelligent sentences are a must (complete with full spelling of words).

Make sure you put something like a box of TicTacs in the picture for comparison purposes.

That lets her know whether you are mini-Me or not.

Sinergy

p.s. I should stop trying to be so helpful.  I dont think it is working.

Some of these are obvious, others I think many of us negate...

1.  They show they have read the profile.

2.  Enclosing an image.

3.  Not demanding titles or giving titles right off the bat.

4.  Showing genuine interest.

5.  Find something to compliment!!!!

I like to see reasonably good grammar and complete sentences organized into paragraphs.  If someone can string a couple of paragraphs together, its a plus. Usually, a couple paragraphs will hold my attention longer than just one.    If someone has something to say about my profile, it's a positive.   I like to hear about their particular interest in writing, as well as something about them because it helps me get a feel for who I'm writing back to.  Asking a question or two is always good, so long as its not too personal.

Yes! How could we forget that one?
And make it a sincere, creative compliment.
The letter I mentioned before contained a compliment I had never heard before in the very first sentence.
