Tobes -> RE: What's Your winning team? (POLITICS) (10/26/2006 11:04:24 PM)

Oho, Zenrage.  The "None of the above" option sounds like a logistical nightmare, especially if you consider how well-informed most people's votes are even with as much time as they have to get acquainted with their choices in candidates.  Giving the public three months to learn what they will about a new batch of candidates is like asking a class of middle-schoolers who've collectively failed a history test to take a make-up test on new material the next day.

Instead of "none of the above," I propose that you can either vote for one candidate or against one.  It'll give people of the "well, anyone but THAT guy" mentality a more valid option.  The math is easy and, if you extend the idea, you have politicians who know their disapproval ratings as well as their approvals, since political ambivalence plays a pretty open role in voting today.

But to answer the OP, I'm for political armchair philosophers: Ani Difranco and John Stewart.

Wesley Clark and perhaps either Edwards, Richardson, or Spitzer.

Clark and Spitzer would get my vote, I like Richardson, and a great big fuck no to Edwards.

Anyone who has been elected this far are loosers. I say that we do not re elect anyone running for any positition. By electing only New People, we might be able to get something done.

CrappyDom -> RE: What's Your winning team? (POLITICS) (10/27/2006 7:02:21 AM)

Fangs,

Since you cannot possibly even know the tiniest bit about every US senator, let alone everyone in the house of Representatives, your statement exposes why those who say "they are all the same" or "they are all corrupt" are such empty words.

There are Republican's who stood up against torture, there are quite a few good Republican politicians and there are Democrats who voted against the last war and have tried to raise opposition to Bush's policies.

The problem is they have to work with an electorate that is ignorant, uneducated, and is willing to believe they can pay less and get more.

100% secular government. If God wants to be part of the government, he can come down and run for president himself.

I've read these posts with some interest - alot of simple answers to complex problems.

You can't stop a train on a dime - it takes time to turn the direction the Dems and Reps have taken us in the last century.

I like the "No Conservatives" or "No Liberals" suggestions - but, you need people that disagree with each other to make sure that all sides of an issue is covered.  If you just have one group that controls all 3 branches of government (as the Dems and Reps have both had on several occasions in the last century), then only half the possible solutions are considered and turning those times is when serious mistakes were made.

Personally, I'd like to see Richard Nixon and George Wallace run in 2008 - it doesn't matter to me which is Pres and which is VP; they are both dead, they can't make any serious mistakes, but it will keep the base of each party up in arms that either of them are back in politics.

If that fails, bring back the Meadow Party - Opus, where are you when we need you?

One thing for sure, anyone who advocates "open borders" will never get in.
Even Hillary Clinton is vehimently against that.
She also stated that she "is against illegal immigration."

Popeye, you need to seriously move to Texas and become one of those minutemen. There is a Moby Dick quality to your obsession with illegal immigration.

I think most people would like to see it addressed but most people do not think it is in the top few problems of this country. This issue has more bipartisan support then almost anything and there still seems to be no real effort to do anything major.

There was a movie called "Distinguished Gentleman" with Eddie Murphy - he was a con man that got elected to Congress ("the ultimate con").

He eventually got a heart and wanted to tackle getting powerlines underground to reduce cancer risk to children (schools are typically built under major power lines because the land is so cheap.)

He has having a press conference on the issue when the big bad career politician walks in, kneels down and puts his arm around the girl with cancer and says to the cameras that "we are going to open hearings and get to the bottom of this"

Later, away from the cameras, Eddie says to the career politician that he was surprised he was going to go with Eddie on this issue.  The career politician says, "I'm not, there's a difference between sound bites on the news and sworn testimony on the floor of the Congress"

I'm paraphrasing, but that sums it up - a dog and pony show for the cameras and nothing actually done on the issue.

The only time you can call a politician a liar is when their lips move ;-)

No I am just pointing out that this issue is more about talk than action. For most Americans it is not a deciding factor on who they will vote for.

popeye1250 -> RE: What's Your winning team? (POLITICS) (10/27/2006 3:35:25 PM)

toserve, I always bring it up when I call, write to or e-mail my reps!
The thing is that "the govt" is supposed to have a handle on illegal aliens but they don't and naturally Bush doesn't want to talk about "failures" and neither do other politicians.
Last year this out of control "immigration" cost us $83 Billion and a few days ago they said it is costing us $90 Billion this year for prisons, jails, schools, medical care, etc, etc.
So it's really not a small thing!
When we have up to 20 million people in this country who aren't supposed to even be here it's more than a small problem and the govt can't even give us an accurate figure and they don't know who a lot of those people are!
To me anyway this is a bigger issue than Iraq.
The next President can simply withdraw our Troops in a few months and let them have their civil war.
Getting 20 million people out of the country will take some time, maybe 10-20 years like it took them to get in here but it can be done.
The ones who'll be doing the complaining then are all those greedy companies who hire them (Republicans) and let the taxpayers pay for their medical, dental, schools for their children. (What a DEAL eh? They can pay them $8 an hour and the Taxpayers pick up their benefits packages! No wonder you see those people driving around in brandnew Mercedes Benz's!)
Oh, and probably some Democrats too.
Big and small companies are addicted to cheap labor in this country and it's hurting everyone!
Toserve, what do we do when our govt either can't or won't do the most basic of it's duties like enforce our borders and our immigration laws?

ZenrageTheKeeper -> RE: What's Your winning team? (POLITICS) (10/27/2006 4:21:38 PM)

Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans will do anything about the illegal immigrants problem in this country.

The Republicans are too far into big business' back pocket that they would take away their slave labor and the Democrats wont take out a chunk of their constituency.

I don't know if illegal aliens are anyone's "constituency", they can't vote.

Yeah, and they can't work or drive in this country either.. or get fake ID's.

Besides the Illegals have also got the uber-irrational-liberals in the west who will defend them as well.

I dont like any politicans. Republicans are complete assholes. Democrats are spineless dweebs. Libertarians are as socially naive as Communists are economically naive.

Obama seems to have his head in the game, but I'm not convinced. After all, John McCain flaked to the far-right and he spent 5 years in a POW camp.

I'm creating a new political party.. The No More Bullshit Party.

I'm enforcing the following ideals:

100% secular government. If God wants to be part of the government, he can come down and run for president himself.

Using every single freedom encroaching piece of legislature to destroy the personal lives of those politicians who passed those bills in the first place. I'm going to label every single Conservative Congressman an Enemy Combatant and toss all of them into Guantanamo Bay where they will endure the most humiliating tortures imaginable by Johnny Knoxville and Bam Magera. Every bit of which will be filmed and put on cable television as the next big thing in reality TV.

Enforce new payroll mandates. Every elected official will make no more, annually, than the average annual salary of the average individual in their area of representation. If  congress wants a raise, then they have to make sure those tax cuts for the upper class they dole out every few months ACTUALLY trickles down into someplace other than an offshore tax-shelter.

Enforce new corporate regulations regarding buying and selling of new businesses. Upon passing of the bill, any business or organization that buys out another business or organization must keep at least 75% of the currently available employee positions from the business bought out, open for no less than 10 years after the acquisition.

In addition, any corporate entity that acts like a hostile, independent nation (eg expecting special deals for operating within US borders, treating their employees  unconstitutionally, breaking US laws within our borders, trying to economically blackmail the US) will be treated like a hostile, independent nation (ie borders invaded with HEAVY firepower, lands and equipment seized, children of those in power placed in federal prisons or shot on sight).

Marijuana and Prostitution will be legalized, regulated and taxed. This country wastes far too many resources combating such petty crimes. Also because it was only by the most ridiculous aesthetics that either was made illegal in the first place.

Zenrage...your thoughts are (in my opinion) clean, but I suspect after watching the posts, you're enjoying the accolades (sp?) far too much.

Hold back, ensure that you've thought things out, and then...jump in with a much reserved opinion.
