Things become disciminatory when they OMIT other races/sexes (whatever) and fail to present (racially specific) awards to all other races.

Valid point, NorthernGent. However I was merley pointing out that bigotry is not limited to one race, or sex, or weight class.  And being misjudged happens to everyone.  By mentioning the different (racially-inspired) awards I was merely trying to point out the fact that the basis of such awards is inherently discriminatory.

True enough in the sense that insults can be hurled in any direction. My point is/was that some insults have more far-reaching connotations than others.

I'm struggling to see why you consider awards for black Americans to be discriminatory. Black American music and popular culture has been exported to other parts of the world from at least the 1920s onwards (possibly before). You could argue that these awards are simply rewarding the role played by black Americans in making the US the most visible country on the planet.

Yes the obese are treated poorly.  It is a sad commentary on our society BUT, I began this thread to point out that skinny people get it too.
I don't fit into the lovley sisterhood that exists among the buxom women.  I have very few large friends, not because I am predjudice, but because they hate me as soon as they see me.
You can ignore it, since apparently the majority of those here are whining about how abused they are and how their weight problem is everyone's fault but their own.
The fact is, big people treat the skinny ones like shit too.
And as a small person who is small ALL OVER- I have first hand experience having to sit through dinner talk of women discussing their bra sizes and how their shoulders hurt, then remarking on how flat so-and so is.
I was called names like "pipe arms" and I was spit on.. so what?  Life is not fair, and we all have to deal the hand  we are dealt.  So deal with it.

Are you saying they hate you because you're skinny?

That is very funny if she believes that.

My best friend for 15 years was a tiny little thing about 90 lbs dripping wet. She was 5 foot 2 and wore a size 0, dark hair and eyes. We were as opposite as two women can be, she petite and me  built amazon. I loved her,  I still love her, but unfortunately I have not talked to her in almost 10 years because the drugs she used to stay so tiny started to infect my life so I had to cut the friendship off for the sake of my son (she became a meth head). She never came back after I told her as long as she was using she could not be a part of my life.

The lengths some go to be thin....

I did not know there was a sisterhood for buxom women, and since I consider 34 DD to be pretty buxom perhaps my invitation got lost in the mail? (pouting here)

Now I am not claiming to be in any way shape or form "skinny"mind you, but there was a time in my life that I was when I was going through my anorexic phase. I was never treated cruelly by anyone. There were comments like "put some weight on before you blow away", but seeing that I weighed less than 120 lbs (50 less than in my photo), I think that these comments were not only justified, but perhaps saved my life. I rethought the whole Calista Flockhart look and realized that dizzy spells and weakness probably were not the most attractive things for a girl of 19

I do not think that the problem is big women, I think the problem is the kind of big women you attract as friends. I have never had comments made like this to me... although I have never been flat chested, I have been very skinny, and I just never have been ridiculed for it.

You were the one that started this thread whining about how no one loves your skinny ass and flat chest. You should take your own advice.... deal with it and stop whining about it.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: "Bigots" come in all sizes and colors (11/2/2006 4:43:52 PM)

Nope I'm not over weight cause any of that shit. McD's is a huge rip off and their foods even their so called "healthy'' ones are full of sugar,  I don't eat icecream either not crystal or ben and jerries. Don't eat domino's either, nor Sarah lee, and I am fat yup no matter what you eat if you don't do something to burn food it turns to fat.

And of course no-one's overweight because of Ben & Jerry's, Mc Donald's, Dominoe's Pizza, or Sara Lee's and no excercise!

WetHotGoddess -> RE: "Bigots" come in all sizes and colors (11/2/2006 8:08:32 PM)

First, julia.. people who spit on me are not my friends.  Maybe you were not treated like shit.  Maybe.. just maybe the people who think they are having a hard time in life from being obese are not having a hard time either!  Perhaps it is ALL IN THEIR HEADS.  Maybe they know they are repugnant and assume everyone is judging them.

Yeah, big women hate me right off the bat.  I don't "fit in" with them.

Furthermore I am not whining.  But I am sure as hell fed up with hearing all the whining from those here who are fat and blame it on everything but the fact they can't stop poking pies into their pie-holes.

Also.. the women who are always commenting on their ugly drooping ta-tas are family members, whom I love.  But.. friends are the ones who say the most callous things, aren't they? Who really gives a fuck what a shtranger has to say?

I really don't give a rat's ass about your opinion.

Please show me anyplace I have stated that those that were more skinny weren't treated poor also?  I have not read myself do this at all.  As a matter of fact, I stated I have been in a relationship with one of them myself.

I wasn't addressing that no one else is treated bad.. I don't blame anyone for my eating disorders but myself.  There wasn't one person there that made me eat, there wasn't someone else forcing their fingers down my throat ten times a day... it was all me.

What I was addressing was how in the past the person I was responding to does seem to have an issue with someone being overweight.  I couldn't care less who he likes or doesn't, or for that matter, who you like or don't.  It's just that it's not right to do it to ANYONE based on ANYTHING.... it happens to us all for something.

The pretty ones are hated by the not so pretty.. the fat by the thin, the too thin by the regular, the smart by the dumb, the dumb by the smart..etc.. someone can find something to not like someone for if they want, it's not that hard.  No one has a right to say you have to find something attractive you don't, but you can't deny that just because you might not like it, that someone else won't or shouldn't...and that seems to go on a lot around here.

It is not a race issue. There must be exclusively Country & Western awards?

I take your point that this is not really the meat of your OP and I agree that prejudice comes in all shapes and sizes. In fact, part of our make-up is tied in with subconsciously judging others and we do this based on the images we are fed every day from various angles. As some of these images show being overweight in a negative light then it follows that we'll begin to think and act according to this view. My limited understanding of this particular subject is that being overweight hasn't always been frowned upon by wider society.

popeye1250 -> RE: "Bigots" come in all sizes and colors (11/4/2006 12:21:52 PM)

Gent, if you want to know my opinion on any issues just ask Julia, she "knows" what I think.

Lordandmaster -> RE: "Bigots" come in all sizes and colors (11/4/2006 12:27:41 PM)

Well, yeah, I know what you're saying.  But why do we have an obesity epidemic in America?  My theory is that we eat too much crap and don't get enough exercise.  What exactly is wrong with that theory?  Of course it won't explain why every obese human being is obese, but I'm afraid it will explain the overwhelming majority of them.

quote:

ORIGINAL: NorthernGent

I personally know nothing about the causes and solutions of obesity and I would hazard a guess that I am representative of wider society. Thus, when someone says the solution is to "eat less" it is certainly thoughtless based on the probability that the person making such remarks knows little about obesity.

L@A it's a good theory and more than likely the truth but people don't want to hear the truth if it's going to make them uncomfortable.
You're not ; "telling them the truth" you're ; "Demonizing" them! lol
Get with it Man, it's all about that "Feel Good" stuff!
Oh! And don't forget about the "Victim" stuff either!
Have a quirk, like, desire, kink, habit, hobby? You're a "Victim" it's not *your* "Fault."  It's because of A. B. C. D. E. all the above.
Oh! Whatever you do don't use that "responsibility" word though.
They REALLY don't like that word!
That went out of favor when the Clinton's came to town.

juliaoceania -> RE: "Bigots" come in all sizes and colors (11/4/2006 1:25:41 PM)

popeye,

I have to say you are quite amusing... tell me what clinton has to do with that?[:D]

meatcleaver -> RE: "Bigots" come in all sizes and colors (11/4/2006 2:57:48 PM)

I've implied it before. The British are the fattest people in Europe and what have they in common with Americans? We all know the answer, they eat junk. There is no nice and polite way of saying it.  Cross the channel and there are millions of people who eat a better diet and they don't have such a problem with obesity. It speaks for itself.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: "Bigots" come in all sizes and colors (11/4/2006 3:02:09 PM)

there was thishuge girl  and people in my jr high were so cruel to her, They sung this lil song bad boys bad boys whatcha gonna do whatcha gonna do when tia grisbey comes for you. Implying she was so fat you were in trouble. And so much much more. Yup it still happens, and in 11th and 12th grade which was just in 2002 2001 I was called thunder thighs fat ass and any other number of rude names and I was still fairly in good shape then only slightly chubby instead of the 300 I am now. It happens. So happens when i was skinny and a 34 c I got sexually harrased by boys and girls, so yeah it happens on all fronts if people are inclined to be mean.

Obese people also are discriminated against for employment.

I remember fat girls being the object of torment in my high school. I knew of one that had been assaulted for her obesity and as a result had to leave school, this was 20 years ago, but I imagine it still occurs often.

It is really not that difficult to understand, juliaoceania.

Bill Clinton used to go running in the morning to lose weight, and stop at McDonalds for a Egg McMuffin for breakfast.

Clear as mud?
