lets discuss these double standards
and how much of this crap is  postulated
we are to believe that everyone is equal?
do we all start out equal and then lose value?
seriously..
don't even tell me that my life is not worth more than ,say ted bundy's..
personal worth..and

Having preferences does not make you a bigot, Thompson, no matter what some say.

Let's consider this next statement.  When you are making love, would you rather  have a fit man on top of you or a 400 pound man?  (this is for those so inclined to have a male partner)

When you are giving head.. do you prefer to caress a toned torso or push the beer belly out of the way?

Hey. A 400 lb. guy is in shape. Round is a shape.

I mean would you rather have a fit guy on top of you or a Top guy fit into you?

Seriously, Lotus, I'm guessing that your coy verbal construction was to insulate you (like an adipose layer) against being called out for declaring big bodies ugly, big bellies distasteful, and furthermore being unable to imagine why anyone would honestly disagree.

Speaking in purely hypothetical and and non-personal terms--since you so kindly didn't make any personal comments about fat or beer-bellied folks--some people would get hung up over horsey, masculine facial features (this is for those so inclined to have a female partner), splotchy complexion, man hands, and obsessive concern over externalities. Thankfully others can shove things like that out of their way, or even find each or all of these things attractive in themselves--however hard that might be for some of us to imagine.

Now let's consider this:

It is possible for a human being to be more concerned for the person with whom they share intimacy than with the statistics or pejorative terms which can be employed to describe that person's body.

Weird, huh?

The main thing, though, is that we can have this civilized conversation without anyone casting aspersions toward individuals who might happen to fit a given generic description.

Thanks, Noah!

This reminds me of teaching Economics 101 and the phrase "Ceteris paribus" - i.e. all other things being equal.  The problem in Econ, as in life, all other things are NOT equal.  Yes, it would be great  to have a guy who looks like a Chippendales dancer or a woman who looks like a Playboy bunny AND who has a great sense of humor, is intelligent, honest, fair, respectful and any number of other things I value.  But given that ALL these things are statistically highly unlikely to be found in the same package, I will prioritize, and the looks are pretty much last on the ladder.

When I was younger I was VERY skinny.  Everyone hated me. I was ridiculed.  I was ugly and dorky.  Of course, since I was skinny and not fat, I got no sympathy. And now, people wonder why I am such a bitch.

These days being oversized is in style.  Being able to "eat like a man" and consume mass quantities of food is something that is marketed to show a "healthy" appetite.  Why is there a double-standard concerning obesity as opposed to being thin?    It is OK to be fat but NOT ok to be skinny..  Why is that?  I  never had anyone compliment me on being thin. Instead, I was insulted. I was asked if I was sick.  Skinny people have feelings too.  Why are only the chubby folks given consideration?  Who is the majority, after all?

I never had an eating disorder.  I was just "skinny".. Oh BTW... being called "skinny" is NOT a compliment.  It is a derrogatory comment!   Of course, I should take it, and not call someone who is obese "fat", right?

Nicole Ritchie made big news because her bones show.  But there are many over weight celebs who embrace their body image and there is no news camera there, questioning how unhealthy their fat is?  I am not saying one is better than the other- I am merely pointing out a double standard.

Why can the blacks have a music award and a black Miss America, but the other nationalities can't?   Why are there music awards for blacks , and tv stations for the black and nothing for other nationalities?  Why does society think thses double-standards are acceptable??

I , like many who claim to be open minded, really are just as biased and closed minded as the rest of society.

Before accusing others of bigotry.. look in the mirror.

I generally like people for who they are not what they look like.
I have friends of all types, shapes, sizes.

As far as networks I believe there is Telemondo(spanish) as an option.
There is a reason they have BET...there is a call for it.
They have Spike tv just for guys and the Oxygen network for Women.Who exactly is being left out? They show Gay and Lesbian shows on all sorts of channels.
Then there is TV Land that plays all the old shows, like All in the Family...I tried watching that show and realized...I do not like Archie Bunker...but back in the day he was the bomb.

BTW...I guess you missed the show on E! the top 100 celebrity slimdowns...
I can think of a fat celeb...Oprah...Chirstie Allie...Rosanne....Rosie O'Donnell
They have all been picked on for their weight gain/loss for the last 5 years at least.
Hmmmm....Notice they are all Women...Now heres something you never hear about is a bald, fat guy celebrity....

And one other thing....who was it that took the Indians and put them in the white mans clothes....who was it that shackled the black man....
IMO we have no one but ourselves to blame for some people wanting equal rights and maybe even more...consider it the price we pay for the mistakes of the past.

Hello A/all,

There are any number of medicines and medical problems which can cause or contribute to weight gain.  The ones that come off the top of my head include antidepressants, thyroid problems, diabetes, certain steroids, etc.

A person who is obese or rail thin may not have any control over their weight.  They might have a medical condition forcing them to put on/ lose weight when they subsist on a diet of celery and water.  When people criticize people who are overweight I have difficulty taking much of what they say seriously, in the same way I have trouble taking things seriously that are said by intolerant or ignorant people.

But that is just me, and I could be wrong.

Sinergy

This is very true. When I was younger I was always really thin and I struggled to put on any weight at all. In my late 20s I was diagnosed with an illness that was treated with steroids. I went from a UK size 8 to a UK size 18 in less that 3 months so I can honestly say that I have knowledge of what it is like to be both ends of the scale. I have never been treated any differently whatever size I am.

If anyone treated me differently because of my size I would feel sorry for that person as they are obviously too shallow to bother with.

Mmmmmm. Jodie Foster.

Jodie Foster is attractive, as is Flockhart, but the latter would look much better with about 15-20 extra pounds.

Yup.. I'll go on record saying fat is not my favorite situation.  I'm sorry if my visual image was unsettling to you.

The point that isn't getting through, Lotus, is that neither I nor a a lot of people find those images unsettling at all. And some people will find them hot as hell. Furthermore, most of those people, in my experience, are able to understand and accept that your preferences may be different rather than trouble themselves to set up little (doomed) exercises to "show" that their taste trumps yours.

If anything mildly unsettling has come from you in this thread it is the holding up of construction workers as ethical exemplars. And that evaluation on my part has a lot to do with the fact that I am one.

So.. got any nekked pictures of yourself, Noah?

Nope. Sorry. I'm wearing my tool belt in every one. Now the question is: is that my framing hammer or am I just happy to see your good lookin' sister?

Paradoxy -> RE: "Bigots" come in all sizes and colors (10/29/2006 9:28:35 AM)

I'm a skinny guy.  As in REALLY skinny.

I wonder if the women in my life realised that telling a guy he's skinny in this society is an awful lot like telling a woman she's fat.

Yeah, it bothers me a little I can't gain weight which I could turn into a fine-tone...

I could undergo a 3,000+ calerie diet and gain five pounds in a month.  I don't like eating that much, though, and I'm sure it wouldn't be good for me anyway.
