What part of Kerry's statement is wrong?

I'll attempt to answer your credible question. [8|]

A:  The part where he called the volunteer military a bunch of uneducated idiots.

I like to think I'm educated, certainly too educated to fight in an illegal war.

Um, the deficit is not soaring; it is dropping.

Um, it's only dropping from the historic high that W and his dimwit administration have allowed it to soar to.  Um, remember that it was a large surplus, not a deficit, when Tweedledum took office?  Um?

LadyEllen -> RE: Understanding What Kerry Said (11/3/2006 3:59:22 AM)

The bit I'm confused about, is that my impression was that a lot of students in the US from poorer backgrounds take a military scholarship for their higher education, and thus end up being called up to Iraq. So what Kerry said, makes no sense really? A lot of the guys and gals in Iraq (and elsewhere), as I understand it, are exactly the people who do study hard, do their homework and make the best of the educational opportunities available to them. That aspiring to fulfil their potential required a military scholarship due to not having a trust fund or something, and that they are then sent off to some ill conceived war that their own education and intelligence tells them is just wrong and stupid, provides all the motivation needed I'll bet, for other poorer students not to continue with their education if they require military scholarships to do that?

And aside from that, I cannot imagine why someone of such supposed wisdom and actual position in US society, would choose to label the troops in such a way as this comment did. The troops go where they are told to go, so I'm afraid its not them that should be labelled as stupid, but those who sent them. Or is this the setting of a scene for a Vietnam style "welcome" home for the troops "stupid" enough to be fighting and dying in Iraq, to avoid any accusation of stupidity being levelled against those who sent them? Like Mr Kerry, as I understand it - he voted for it, so I'm told.

There were an awful lot of politicians on both sides of the Atlantic that voted for their political careers rather than conscience. I suspect Kerry was one of them.

That might be, but thats a worse excuse for such a blunder than honestly voting for the blunder in good conscience and with good intentions. The first is disgusting and unforgivable, and only adds to the cynicism about politics and politicians, the second would be a mistake, which even our glorious leaders are entitled to make from time to time, as despite what they'd like us to think, they are human (well, the ones that are'nt simian).

The thing that most disgusts me about this is that we have a country with really bad problems and people are making THIS more important than our soaring deficit and the war in Iraq... Kerry is not even running for office for crying out loud!

When a Senator brings up the topic and jokes on how our military is mostly made up of poverished and uneducated people, the issue needs to have a few eyebrows raised. We can't have arrogant big heads like this in any office.

Anyhow, in referance to a draft, it's as if some people want it more than others so that rich people will have to deal with there childeren going off fight and risk there life.

Well people who have no issues to run on tend to make hay over nothing. It will not work, the republicans are probably going down on election day, and all the hay making about Kerry is for naught.

About the draft, I do not know what you are talking about, so I do not know how to respond to that.

  true
from the other kerry thread
Despite what John Kerry and Charlie Rangel want you to believe, the truth is our soldiers are better educated and come from more affluent homes than the average American.

MrrPete -> RE: Understanding What Kerry Said (11/3/2006 4:42:51 PM)

The deficit has been cut in half 3 years ahead of schedule.
The deficit is only 1.9% of GDP

The deficit sonds high because we are dealing with very
big numbers to start with.

How many of you can claim credit card debt that low?

MrrPete -> RE: Understanding What Kerry Said (11/3/2006 5:09:34 PM)

Since we no longer have a draft the military doesn't have to take anyone that isn't smart enough to handle the technology of today's services.

Except for a few officers that came up through the ranks they all went through ROTC or the academies.

Even Hilary said Kerry blew it.

Kerry's disdain for the military is well documented. Did you know that there is a war memorial to John

I can claim Zero credit card debt- woohoo  lol
because we don't have any cards any more- we got rid of them years ago, if we don't have the money we don't buy.

No, the deficit sounds high because it is high.

You are absolutely right, MrrPete.

Of course, with Clinton in office it was a trade surplus.  That means we made more money exporting things than we spent importing things.

Monkeyboy made it a trade deficit.  That means we spent more money importing things than we made exporting things.

For those keeping score, that would be going from a positive number of dollars coming in to the United States being turned in to a negative number of dollars.

Not to mention more than doubling the collective debt of the United states as amassed by every President since Washington.

Please try to keep up.

I've never understood this "Clinton surplus" mantra.  I guess it depends on how you define surplus.  I think that a true surplus, by definition, would lower the debt.  Yet if you go to the Bureau of the Public Debt, you can clearly see that the debt rose every single year that Clinton was in office.

Excellent job report today.  A 95.6% employment rate.  This will help the Republicans next Tuesday, along with Michael Fox motivating the social conservatives, and Kerry's shameful attack on the intelligence of the US troops.

ZenrageTheKeeper -> RE: Understanding What Kerry Said (11/4/2006 6:47:23 AM)

A person would have to have a comprehension level of a first grader not to understand that Kerry was directing those statements at Bush.

Bush is the one that got us stuck in Iraq when the congress voted, not for a war, but to allow Bush to use military forces as a last resort. The soldiers had no say in the decision to go to Iraq. They signed their lives away and became national resources to be used or abused as any administration saw fit that day in the recruiter's office.

I am glad Kerry finally said what needed to be said and that stuck to his guns.. for at least a bit, before caving in to political pressure from his own party.

To those that serve or have served, 1 message: If you have not died defending your country, you have no business talking down to anyone as if you had.

To those that still support Bush and the Iraq War, 1 message: If you still support this mission, then go to Wal-Mart, buy all the guns and ammo you want, get yourself a one way ticket to Iraq and go fight it yourself. There's no wall around the United States yet, and there is no excuse why you can't die for your own cause.
