I could learn something by having my ideas torn apart and defending them, but it takes a lot of work to write them

Most people do not understand what Marx was saying the end game would be eventually, and it was not governments like Russia or China.. he had some Utopian and some nihilistic views, but he also had many economic theories that had great import on my own ideas... like I have said before, he was a threat for a reason, and banned for a reason, and that reason is he had a lot of valuable ideas.

Materialism and Idealism are good places to start in why his thoughts are so well regarded to this day by economists and other social scientists.

Yes. That's one reason I haven't started a "where the world should be, in a socio-economic sort of way" thread, yet. I have so much else going on right now, it boggles my mind just thinking about getting everything in my head down on paper, so to speak.

julia,

My "moron" comment was in reaction to PeterK50, not you.  It was just both of your posts showed the same general belittling and angry attitude.

I think I said that I have no problems with either AirAmerica or Rush.

Why you seem to be taking offense is unknown to me.

Firmhand, yes, that's another thing that's very unattractive about Democrats, they're so Godamned *ANGRY* all the time.
Like the saying goes; "you can attract more flies with honey than vinegar."
The Democratic Party has so many "identities" that it has no identity.
There must be 100's of fringe groups that claim to be Democrats yet have nothing in common with each other and maybe some even can't stand the other.
And the Democratic Party doesn't "stand" for anything anymore!
Fifty years ago they were "The Working Man's Party", now they support Illegal Aliens being in the country who break our laws and drive wages down for the working man!
It's just a collection of moonbats, communists, anarchists, socialists, chronic complainers, pot smokers, global socialists, anti American, anti-Israel, pro-"U.N.", pro-Africa, pro-foreign aid, pro-illegal alien, and other assorted carnival side show freaks.
All they do is piss people off.

And here I thought all these programs were protected speech.   I used to listen to Rush becasue as he said so often he is an entertainer first and I found him entertaining.   Not so with the liberal broadcasts, which were way to serious.   Now I don't listen to any of them (including NPR) because we don't get them way out here in the middle of the desert.

I watch less than 2 hrs a week of television ; half of that is at the gym while I'm on some kind of cardio machine. Television, for the most part, is garbage. And yes....even though I am not a fan of Rush or Hannity, I still think listening to them is better than watching television.

My personal observation is that "true believers", regardless of the political party or religion tend to not have much in the way of a sense of humor, and are very prickly about the slightest indication of a potential slight.

Fanatics, true-believers, and "fundies" of all persuasions are like that, from my experience, and one of the indicators to me of people not quite in touch with reality.  (My reality, anyway.)

Conversely, people who can take a joke, enjoy humor and give it back in the same way seem to be to be able to seriously discuss a sensitive subject, and the deepest thoughts about politics, religion, sex, etc without discord and rancor.

I prefer to stick with that type, but sometimes I can't stop myself from pointing out the absurdity of the true-believers, and their often apparent illogic.

*shrugs*

I consider it one of my few personality faults.

Well said FirmHand.  Though I should honestly admit that taunting the True Believers can be an amusing way to unwind after a long day and I don't consider it a fault.  My abilty to keep a smile on my face when replying is also an excellent guage of whether I'm getting enough sleep.

I've always been partial to Discovery, History and such.  My youngest son has been on a Classic Movies bender for a few months, and an occasional film from the 30's or 40's seems to be enjoyable.

Network news (broadcast or cable)?  Shrill and boring.  The 'net is much better,  more in-depth and easier to verify.

As far as radio, I listen to anything that's on while I'm in my Jeep, so that mainly means right-side stuff, so it was an intentional joke when I said "ditto" to Level's post.  Kinda wanted to see who else had a sense of humor.

Level qualifies.

Oh man. I haven't seen you post much on this part of the boards -  Read some of the threads regarding the military and Iraq - Some have put themselves into such a small box, they've left no room to climb out.

I don't understand, that's why I put "side" in parentheses , though when you say "Marxist", it gives me ideas.

So you have studied Marxist philosophy?

Or are you like one of those people who lump his philosophies in with those damn Communists that ran the USSR, Red China, North Vietnam, and Kampuchea?  I use those 4 countries because the United States government called them all Communists, vilified them for being Communists, feared they would all join into a big Red Menace and take over the world, and all of them had completely different forms of governments in charge of their country.

Not to mention that these governments all hated or feared the other so-called "Communist" governments.

Weird.  Now we have similar rhetoric spewing from the White House about Islam, as if there is any sort of connection between the Islam practiced in Indonesia and the Islam practiced in Iran.

Calling something a name like Communism or Marxism does not really signify understanding of the subject matter.  What was done throughout most of the cold war was to attach emotional rhetoric (and I mean the bad kind, not the sort of rhetoric that an skilled and intelligent orator like Thomas Jefferson or Andrew Jackson would present) to a word and then villify those who identify with that word.

It is like the nitwits in the United States who think we live in a "Democracy."  The form of government known as "Democracy" was originally proposed by Plato, and was a system of government where every citizen (euphemism for a man with property) in the country voted on each and every issue.  The government in the United States is a Representative Republic, not a Democracy, and it has never been a Democracy.  Jefferson would have liked to have the United States be a Democracy, but he knew that the amount of time it would take people to go from point A (their home) to point B (Washington D.C.) was prohibitive.  So we elect representatives from our district who are expected to go to Washington and support causes which are important for the people in that district.

One of the major reasons that the Republicans are going to be handed their walking papers this election is exemplified by Jean Schmidt.  Her district has voted Republican since World War 1.  But she has so disenchanted her constituency, with her warmongering and adherence to the Republican party line, that the Democratic challenger stands to defeat her by as many as 5% points.

But back to my original point about your quote.  I wont call myself an expert on Marxism, although I have studied quite a bit of the subject so Julia and I can have a reasonable argument about his ideas.

I, for one, would be really interested to hear you provide a coherent synopsis of juliaoceania's "side," but I doubt you will even attempt it.  There are subjects which a categorization of sound bites from Rush Limbaugh would fail to really elucidate.

Just me, etc.

Well, if he's going to call out Rush as a  Big Fat Idiot, he should step up and prove it with a one on one debate and not with a  book few have heard of followed by a failed radio station that hangs on for dear life.

Al Franken writes really interesting books.  My favorite is "Lying liars and the lies they tell."  In this book, he uses a service on the internet called "NexusLexus" to find words spoken or written by people in the media.

So then he finds things Rush Limbaugh (or Hannity, or whoever) emphatically states he never stated, plugs it in to NexusLexus, and voila, the actual quote with the time and date stamp appears where Limbo or Hannity or Coulter or Monkeyboy made the statement.

So we are left with two possibilities.

1)  These people are lying to us about what they said.

2)  These people dont remember what they said.

I imagine there will never be a one on one debate between Limbaugh and Franken because Limbaugh will never invite Franken onto his show, and Limbaugh will never agree to go somewhere and have a debate with Al Franken.

I suppose calling Rush Limbaugh a Big Fat Idiot is a bit mean spirited.  But Rush Limbaugh has called other people names and treated them poorly in a manner that is equally mean spirited.  Some people can take what they dish out, other people cannot.

Just me, etc.

Actually, they called themselves communists, as well, it's not something America made up. And I do know they were different styles of governments.

Not to mention that these governments all hated or feared the other so-called "Communist" governments.

The Chinese reds called the Vietnamese the "Cubans of the Orient", which amuses me.

Weird.  Now we have similar rhetoric spewing from the White House about Islam, as if there is any sort of connection between the Islam practiced in Indonesia and the Islam practiced in Iran.

Are you referring to the "Islamic fascists" stuff? Because those kind of murderous idiots do exist in differing Islamic communities.... although you're right in that there are different sects of Islam, the Sufis are some interesting ones.

Agreed, which is one reason I'd like to hear julia's ideas, as she calls herself a Marxist, that can mean different things.

I, for one, would be really interested to hear you provide a coherent synopsis of juliaoceania's "side," but I doubt you will even attempt it.  There are subjects which a categorization of sound bites from Rush Limbaugh would fail to really elucidate.

As I said to julia, I don't really know or understand her "side", thus my encouragement of her stating her views. I was genuine in that. If I had to guess, it's a combination of a redistrubution of wealth, universal healthcare, and a reverence of nature as a sort of lifeblood for the human race. At least these are some items I've noted that she seems to care about. Certainly, I could be wrong, and am waiting to see if that's so.

Now the rest of your post, Sinergy, reeks of snottiness and ignorance. If all you've gotten out of my posts are that I'm a blind acolyte of anyone, much less Rush Limbaugh, you really need to brush up on your reading skills.

Just me, etc.

Ok.

Since you have not studied Marxism, what exactly does your sentence "You call yourself a Marxist... that gives me ideas" mean?

What sorts of ideas are you "given" about a subject you have have no educational background in?

When I hear the term "marxist", I get ideas, or to put it another way, I draw upon what little I've read or heard about it, which generally leads into marxism and the redistrubution of wealth, and the giving of power into the hands of the people moreso than in the hands of leaders and corporations.
