Support for 98 is done and over with. ME was a joke and should never have been sold... but I believe that is nearing an end as well. 2000 is going to be supported for a little while yet although I believe I read the plans for their (phase out) of the software.

I agree that it is a good idea to upgrade to XP... but not on that machine. In addition, one must be VERY, VERY, VERY careful buying used equipment. Unless it is your only option, stay away from it unless it comes from a reputable company and it fully reconditioned... but again, you just do not know what you are getting.

Under $500 can get a pretty jamming computer that will just make her eyeballs shoot from her head with just how fast these new fangled things are. Time for the 21st century...

I realize that my system is seriously outdated, and that I'll need to upgrade at some point sooner than later. Buying a new system is not a financial issue for me. The truth is that I get some kind of perverse pleasure in marching to a different beat in this disposable world of ours.

Hell, just last month I finally dumped the car I bought new 13 years ago, and I felt like a traitor for doing it.

You know, I just might take your advice and add a bar or two of RAM. While I'm at it, exchange the 28K modem with a 56K.

The way I see it, if I buy another year or two in time, the money I spend on the upgrade will be about the same that today's new PCs will come down in price over the same time period.

In terms of the CM loading issue, you are the first non- Windows 98 user to report a similar problem.

Granted, Gauge, I might have overreacted. But the comment about CM not wanting it plastered all over the boards, and the comment about wondering how much business they were losing....I'm sure that since the intent of this site was to bring everyone together, that they would welcome others talking to each other about fixes. I was not trying to turn it into an attack, however I am definitely of the mind that the powers that be on here are awesome in their dedication, and when I saw something said about trying to keep something off of the boards, I will admit that I overreacted.

Edited to add: I have two computers in my home, both running Windows XP, of the same modem running through a router, and the problem is present on one and not the other.

I think probably they kept this one because it had more comments, but, it was a thread about the exact same subject.

Actually, my words were not at all motivated by paranoia.

And screaming? You've got to be kidding.

I actually understand why it makes business sense not to have this loading issue plastered all over the boards. After all, CM does have advertisers who have links on CM's homepage.

I was merely informing Metaldom and Budderflywings, since they both posted on the now vanished thread, and they were both nice enough to post here.

Believe me when I tell you that I am not trying to force you to buy a new computer, as stated before, I advocate fixing what you have. However, when it comes to older machines, the upgrades are actually beginning to cost a lot more than one would think.

Let's take a short shopping trip, shall we? OK... a 56k modem card will run somewhere around $40 or so. Not so bad so far. If... (and this is a HUGE if) you can find 32M RAM sticks you will pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $20 to $30 per stick. Now, I am pulling these prices out of my head right now so don't hop all over me and tell me I am full of shit because I am just giving you rough figures. If you go for one stick of 128M RAM then figure between $30 and $40. Now all of this is not so bad at this point... but then you must pay someone (unless you are comfortable doing the upgrades yourself) to install all of this stuff. Add anywhere from $50 to $100 (and I would lean closer to the $100 figure) or so to the price tag. You will have spent nearly $200 to basically put lipstick on a pig.

Your affection for your current system is admirable if not noble, however you must take into account a few things. If you actually spend $200 on the upgrades another $300 and you get a new computer with the capacity to handle today's changing software and Internet. You may well get another year or two out of your computer, but if you actually expect the computer market to go down much further than it has and make your "investment" pay off, then I would think that over again if I were you. Notably, computer prices have radically dropped because the market is basically saturated and people just do not NEED them like they have in the past because they have a machine now that can still handle the technology that is out there now. But the Internet software/web coding/plug-ins etc. are changing rapidly and old machines (over 6 or 7 years old) are just not going to be able to keep up without having their machine run quite a bit slower trying to process everything. Do not expect to see a drastic reduction in current computer prices within the next 5 years unless they perfect the super-conductor... then everything will fly right out the window and even your toaster will never be the same again. I mean, full systems: PC, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and printer for under $500 is a damn sweet deal.

Your analogy of the automobile was a good one to show your loyalty but it was not a great one for a comparison to computers. You see, an automobile, if it is maintained and treated well will last a good long time. The fuel that cars run on isn't changing to the point that everyone must scrap their old cars and get new ones, but that day may well soon be here as we search for alternative fuels. There will also come a time when your mechanic will turn to you and ask you if you really want to spend $3000 for a new engine or if you would rather just get another car. Software for computers is changing quite rapidly and the old computers just cannot keep up, period. No matter how you slice it the computer world is totally different from cars... a computer you bought last year will be "out-dated" within that years time. Will it still handle what you need it to? Of course it will... most computer users just do not need all the power that they have in their PC's.

All I am saying is think twice, buy once. Evaluate what you want to do carefully because one of the worst feelings in the world to me is throwing good money after bad.

Hello once again...

I do appreciate all the great help and suggestions from everyone. For me right now the purchase of a new system isn't possible. I certainly will as soon as I'm able..

In the meantime would it be possible for one of you who CAN still access the Collarme site, to report this problem to the mamagement there, so it can be evaluated and fixed if possible????? PLEASE???? If I could get into the site I'd have already done it 5 X over myself. I know there must be MANY more than those of us who are here discussing it affected by this problem/glitch/ whatever-it-is. It's frustrating as all get-out, to not even have an idea if the powers that be even know about it.

I'm not at all complaining about 'disappearing threads'.... just found it to be curious, especially when the original one I posted on about this problem (started by 'ashtray') was not the same info as this one.. The question there was whether the server was down.... and again, several other members reporting being affected by the very same problem that's being discussed here. I directed MetalDom to this thread, since it was to his benefit to read it and be aware that he isn't the only one affected.

Again, PLEASE.... could someone report this problem on the Collarme site, and it would probably be a good idea to direct them to refer to this thread so they get all the background info, and what's already been tried so we don't have to start at ground zero.

I know the mods look at the threads at large, but I will put a call out on the other side, as I still have some computers that can get on that side. As I said on the other thread, you have my sympathies, (as I said on the other thread) before I knew it was a site problem, since I had had a few other problems with my laptop, I wiped that whole harddrive, and now am getting errors with the recovery disk and going to have to get online with a tech to see how to get past the files that don't seem to want to transfer from the disk to the drive to make it operational. I wish you better luck with your system than I am having with mine, but will put a ticket into Support on the other side.

Thank you SO MUCH for sending an email about the problem we're all having to the main site!

I feel for you, with your one computer not responding now that you've torn it apart and are attempting to reload it all. I was nearly tempted to do that here too, when this problem first started. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that the rest will go smoothly. I can't help but wonder how many others have done much the same thing in attempting to solve the problem themselves, thinking it's on their end.

Not everyone comes here to check the boards.... and to tell you the truth I was really expecting some sort of official announcement in that area of the boards. When I didn't find something listed there... I initially figured it had to be my computer alone. I just happened to catch the first thread I posted to.... where someone else inquired as to the server being down.... as it scrolled by as one of the most recent threads posted to. Otherwise I'd never have known where else to look on the boards.

Much appreciation for taking your time to report this!

You are more than welcome. They have not responded to me as of yet, but I know they are very busy. I'm glad only one of us jumped the gun on wiping their hard drive, laughs, and thanks for your good thoughts. Guage, not meaning to sound like a prick or anything, but AVG is no longer the tool of choice. Avast! simply blows it away. As for antispyware, spybot is actually outdated and pretty much useless. Ad-aware is pretty close behind. Ewido has taken the lead, but Prevx1 offers a free trial solution that will simply kill it. There is no need for aftermarket firewalls, so scrap that idea. There are lengthy articles on that topic. CCleaner is a must have (crap cleaner). Also, if you have Windows XP then Microsoft Defender is highly recommended as well.

These are the main ones. There are others, but try these first.

Hi... having similar issues here... site wont load up... just says done at the bottom and no pics... but I just reformatted my system and had to reinstall everything... could that have done it... I even reloaded my ....Yes AOL ....software and got nada...

Stuck with ME on this Piece of junk.. only because gateway will not update me without my losing the free tech service for life... or so they said... this stinks

For those who missed it.. I read the above comments about 98, ME and 200 being outdated... FYI

So the question is... what do we.... who are XP deprived supposed to do??...

Well... you just do the best you can with what you have available to you. Keep your system clean and maintained and it should offer little trouble. Also, I would question Gateway as to why their policy is that way. 2000 is not outdated, but will be coming up to that time soon. It's a damn nice operating system and a far cry more stable than 98 or ME ever wished to be.

i have had the exact same problem for almost 3 days now. i finally was able to get to my messages on Wednesday, but that has been the last time. The past 2 days i cannot get past the blank white screen.... yet i have no problem getting here... or any other website/page.... and i do not have the option of trying from work because it is blocked.

There has to be a common denominator for those having problems.

Any Mac users having problems?

Any Firefox users having problems?

What ISP are you using? dial-up or broadband?

Have you folks cleared your cache and cookies?

It never hurts to defrag - at least once a week

subfever the unfortunate truth is that you are fast approaching the point of being forced to upgrade to a new computer as tech support is disappearing for your old one.

I currently have an Alienware laptop
Pentium P4 3.2 ghz
1 gig of Ram
Windows XP Pro
Firefox
Black Ice firewall
AVG
DSL broadband

Two years ago I came into some money and I went Alienware and tricked out a laptop.
I went through the upgrade menu and doubled the price by the time I was done clicking on this upgrade and that one. It took two days to pay for it because of the daily limit on my bank card. :)

Hmmm, I just tried changing all my settings in an attempt to get the home page not to load. And couldn't do it. I'm 99% percent certain it's either the ISP or a firewall type issue. But I can't get any issue to appear no matter what configuration I use, so It has to be something unique to the affected systems.

Are all of you guys affected using AOL. I saw a couple were that can't get on. Maybe AOL took it upon themselves to block these sites at the server level. Anyone of you try going to other adult sites like alt I'd guess they would block them to if that is the case.
