Well, i admit to being another with an ancient & outdated system that has also served me well. i am also running Win '98 and using dialup. Strange thing is that i have had no problems on any other site. i did do as someone suggested & downloaded Firefox. i can FINALLY see the page again. The different browser allowed it to load instead of giving me a blank white page.

It may all be a mute point soon. i have someone at work that is building me a new system. Thanks to A/all here who offered suggestions, help & hints.

Avast antivirus is crap. Too many false positives. That's no way to attain reliable protection. Edit: What's more, Avast fails to detect Eicar virus test files in an archive. More on the Eicar file here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eicar_test_file

AVG does better with Heuristic testing, see:
http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/09/04/and-the-best-antivirus-is/

Further, you want a firewall that blocks outbound traffic from programs as well. I hate the endless "phone home" shit myself...

SirKenin -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/11/2006 4:09:58 PM)

Heh..  I have run both AVG and Avast! through some very harsh testing, and AVG failed by comparison,  missing half the issues.  Especially online scanning.

You do not need a firewall.  If you have the proper protection on your computer, the "phone home" crap never gets a chance to run.  And for the rest, you should be knowing what you are installing on your computer before you put it on there.

Chaingang -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/11/2006 10:01:32 PM)

No firewall, huh? I call bullshit.

I think it's irresponsible to make those claims in this kind of thread, SirKenin. As is common with you you spout nonsense market-speak as if it were true without any supporting details whatever. Support your claims with detailed descriptions of a hypothetical "no firewall" setup or withdraw. In a thread initiated by computer novices and most commonly answered by people who are mainly users and not security geniuses, it's unethical and ridiculous to make the "no firewall" claim.

The only people I have heard make the claim that no firewall is necessary are using a hardware firewall, overly reliant on a NAT firewall on a router, or simply make much of how firewalls by design cannot filter content by file types (i.e. firewalls don't do the jobs of anti-spyware, anti-trojan, anti-virus programs). In other words, they are still filtering their internet connections by some other means and haven't figured out that they are still basically using something that might as well be called a firewall even if we might quibble over the details/definition of such. BTW, all of which is well outside the scope of this thread as most people would understand it.

The easiest scenario I can think of to disprove your point for the average Windows user is the manner in which Microsoft's OS "phones home" to authenticate the product. And as crackers find ways around MS' constant demand to prove authenticity or limit the number of upgrades you can perform before shutting you down yet again, MS finds new ways to route a "phone home" authentication procedure.

I know what I install on my computer and many programs phone home for registration or updates all the time. They are designed to do so. The only way to stop this kind of outbound traffic is via the settings of the programs themselves (if possible and sometimes it's not) or via filtering of some kind. Personally, I don't like being the beta tester for updates and often don't update things except under conditions specifically under my control. I also disagree with online registration and other such things from the standpoint of privacy. Should I get a trojan virus by some means I personally like the idea of the trojan being stopped from communicating outside unless I specifically white list it myself. Firewalls do indeed offer at least some minimal protection in such a case. If a trojan virus cannot communicate out because of some kind of firewall, it can't do any serious damage because it can't open the gates to further malicious code.

Anyway, I have a real hard time accepting security tips from someone whose preferred product fails simple tests like Eicar. If anything, computer security is de facto already breached because crackers are always hard at work and everyone is vulnerable already - but telling people to not follow some basic security schemes is just nuts. The moment you make a computer a little harder to crack than the next one, the cracker moves on.

SirKenin -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/12/2006 1:41:37 AM)

Nope.  Been doing this for 18 years, and I am in constant touch with the gurus behind Windows via email.  The commonly touted need for a firewall is a marketting ploy.

If you know what you are doing and protect yourself, no malware will ever get the chance to call out.

It is as simple as knowing what you are doing.  If you do not, then by all means, burden yourself down with a firewall.  But bear this in mind.  I do have a firewall.  A linux box, sitting over there in the corner.  I dare you to try and get past it.  It stops nothing going out though.  None of the hardware ones usually do.  However, and a HUGE however, ANYTHING will call out if you let it.  That is just the way these things work.  If you get such an unnecessary pain in the ass as Zone Alarm (which is all it is), then no, nothing will call out IN THEORY..  BUT...  Most malware uses common ports such as port 80 and 8080 to call out, piggybacking on legitimate apps.  The ones that do not disguise themselves as a legitimate program so the unsuspecting user will allow it.  There is more, but you think you know everything so there will probably be no changing  your mind.  I only do this every day of My life, including hanging around techie circles.  My business is computers.  What the hell do I know?

But I do not use any of that crap, and I do not have a problem.   Why?   Because I know what I am doing.

Kudos to you for knowing what you are doing Kenin. Most people are not as educated and computer savvy as some of us and it only comes down to the fact that people do NOT know what they are doing. No suggestions here have been detrimental to the novice user. Can a firewall hurt a system? No... so why make a big deal out of it? Most people do not even do simple tasks like defrag and cleaning temp files and the like... stuff that you and I do constantly because we know how.

You cannot take the approach of a seasoned veteran of computers and expect everyone to understand their machine like you do. Thank God for most all of these products that make these less informed users safer as they swim the shark infested waters of the Internet.

Termyn8or -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/12/2006 8:53:09 AM)

I like old too. I finally upgraded to a blazing socket 370 celery 433. I was forced to when my old Iwill motherboard took it's final shit.

And I like 98. The OS migrated just fine and all I had to do was get the video drivers for the (ugh) onboard video.

Anyway the page opens up just fine for me, althought I now notice a login box. It does log on to collarchat automatically though.

Anyway, the upgrades described would be cheaper than some say, but that doesn't mean you should do it. I got this AMD K6-2 on an adapter plate which will run on any socket 7 and most socket 5 motherboards. You can have it for $20, I paid $100 a few years ago. You might need a BIOS update to use it though. I have the Spectra CD with most of the upgrades on it, but you need to find the right one, IIRC there is a program to do this.

Another non-problem is RAM. I got 128MB of EDO 72 pin which is in four 32MB sticks. I dunno what I would take for it, make offer.

Now with the BIOS upgrade the next thing is a newer, faster harddrive. I got a Diamondmax 9 80GB, 7200 RPM for $52 last time, and that included shipping. These are incredibly fast and quiet drives as they are designed for use in TIVOs and DVRs. Even a Windows PC can't overwork these things. A TIVO must read and write MPEG encoded files simultaneously.

I do have a few things around for older PCs if one is really attached to it. For example a 2 or 4 X CD burner and Adaptec EZCD 4.02a. Works fine but it takes almost as long to burn a CD as it does to listen to it.

The main thing I want to say that is germaine to the thread, when you got a computer that slow, you would be surprised how long it can take to parse certain webpages. I mean when you get the white screen, go take a shower or something, it might just be up when you get out. That's one thing about not having a recommended speed processor for a program, in most cases it will work tirelessly to complete the task. You do not get an indication like you get a harddrive light. Older PCs might even appear to be locked up when they are not. There are however programs that absolutely require the advanced instruction set of a more modern processor. When this happens you'll know because it really will lock up.

If you want the most painless upgrade, get a high P3, no higher, clone your drive to a new fast drive and put it in the P3. You'll need your Windows disk and later the abiliy to download drivers. After it gets enough to boot up you go in control panel and remove all the motherboard resources. It goes a bit haywire on the next reboot, and keep the Windows CD handy. You also might need to DL the motherboard drivers, but then it finds the other stuff. You usually need mobo drivers to get proper sound and video even if they are not onboard.

I have done this, I have a highly modified and tweaked Win98SE OS and I do not want to lose it. That is why I don't have a new PC. I can play like 25 songs at once and run a video clip on this thing, all in 160 MB of RAM ! I have one serious sendto menu that I built manually, and that is a bit harder in XP. While JPGs and GIFs are still associated with IE, I can send them to Paint shop pro, Irfanview or Adobe editor without the need to open those programs first.

If you want any of my older stuff say so, you can have it cheap.

SirKenin -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/12/2006 11:44:13 AM)

hahaha.  Reading that last post brings back many memories...  The first computers I used (and programmed) were Ataris and Commodore Pets.  Gosub blah.  Poke this.  Peek that.  lol.  Assembler was a real pain in the ass, but I managed to get funky three dimensional multi-color cubes out of it that you could rotate in any direction.  That was just the mutts nuts at the time.

But to the point.  Why the hell are you playing with old junk?  My firewall box is a P3-450 with 512MB of RAM.  All it does is use linux to monitor internet traffic.  My printer server is a P3-800 or something like that, also with 512MB RAM.  All it does is dish out print jobs.  I don't get it to be honest.  You can pick up a P3 1GHz computer, which is old junk, for $100 or less.  You can pick up a brand new Athlon 64 with 1GB of RAM and a 19" flat panel for $329 USD from Dell even...  Hell, it even comes with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.  Pay only $10 a month.  That is practically a pack of cigarettes.  They are practically giving the damn things away.  It is really, really cheap to upgrade if you feel that is the way you need to go.

I find its easier to build your own pc. Its amazing how easy it is.. When I first made a pc I had  a mate help ( I.E do all the work ) but the next one when I knew what I was doing was easy to put together..

Speaking of old pc's. I wanted some of work old ones. They were willing to give me some but first I had to take out the 64 mb stick of ram. ( I did say old remember ) The 20 gb hdd ( which i agree with as it had confidental stuff ) and also the disk drive. They were going to let me keep the motherboard and the case. I was willing to lose the disk drive and the hdd but the ram was the last straw and I kindly declined the pc'.

It is easy building a computer, really.  Yes, the first time it can be confusing, but after that they are a breeze.  Funny about your work.  What good is a case, motherboard and CPU with nothing else?  I guess they were looking for free dumping.  By the time you buy the parts you need, you are better off just to buy a new one.  hehe.

ShiningKnight -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/12/2006 3:06:51 PM)

Just tried that route... Alt.com and bondage.com show up... just cant get collarme to open up... I checked my Aol parental controls and that is set up for 18+ and has always been...

I did a spyboit check and while there was crap on the puter it fixed it... I strill get a blank page... but I have done a couple of general searches on AOl and have been getting a couple problems with the text of the search being only on the left side of the window... nothing else was showing ... except stuff in the frame to the right...

Why would having ME or any other system be an issue... I really dont get it... why would someone do an upgrade on a site just to hurt someone who doeswnt have the latest software... makes no sense to me... and Gateway said that they only cover the software originally sent with the system... not updates... I think its nuts... ME is a piece of Crud.

I am so annoyed ... it's just been a murphys law sort of week I guess... Should have expected everything to get fouled up... I just want to get it back to normal... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Awwww.....I was so sure that would work....
Well, if it's not working I guess there's no need to reinstall it. To uninstall, Go to:
Start
Control Panel
Add or Remove Programs

There will be a list of all your programs in alphabetical order, so scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and hit the 'uninstall' option. That should do it.
Has your computer ever been able to see the front page or has it always done this?

I've been fully loading the home page and all subsequent pages on the other side for two years without a problem. The trouble all started yesterday.

Update:  I deleted Firefox from my hard drive, then downloaded and re-installed it again. This time it worked. I was able to get into the other side for the first time since Wednesday and finally retrieve my mail.

However, I was not able to respond to the mail. So I came here to report this, and discovered that I could no longer post new or respond to other posts while using Firefox.

So I logged off, and signed on again using Internet Explorer to come here and make this report.

Also, I noticed that even though I was finally able to fully load up the home page on the other side... everything else here and elsewhere loads notably slower using Firefox, compared to Internet Explorer.

SirKenin -> RE: Any Techies Here? Calling All Geeks! (11/12/2006 5:30:19 PM)

Knight:  You may want to try reinstalling Me..  Me has issues with needing to be reinstalled after a while of use, like a year or so.

subfever:  There are tweaks to make Firefox faster, but Firefox out of the box is a slower browser than IE.  The newest version is said to improve on this though.  Everything I have read, however, shows it to be hit and miss, which is something I can not figure out.
