I like old too. I finally upgraded to a blazing socket 370 celery 433. I was forced to when my old Iwill motherboard took it's final shit. And I like 98. The OS migrated just fine and all I had to do was get the video drivers for the (ugh) onboard video. Anyway the page opens up just fine for me, althought I now notice a login box. It does log on to collarchat automatically though. Anyway, the upgrades described would be cheaper than some say, but that doesn't mean you should do it. I got this AMD K6-2 on an adapter plate which will run on any socket 7 and most socket 5 motherboards. You can have it for $20, I paid $100 a few years ago. You might need a BIOS update to use it though. I have the Spectra CD with most of the upgrades on it, but you need to find the right one, IIRC there is a program to do this. Another non-problem is RAM. I got 128MB of EDO 72 pin which is in four 32MB sticks. I dunno what I would take for it, make offer. Now with the BIOS upgrade the next thing is a newer, faster harddrive. I got a Diamondmax 9 80GB, 7200 RPM for $52 last time, and that included shipping. These are incredibly fast and quiet drives as they are designed for use in TIVOs and DVRs. Even a Windows PC can't overwork these things. A TIVO must read and write MPEG encoded files simultaneously. I do have a few things around for older PCs if one is really attached to it. For example a 2 or 4 X CD burner and Adaptec EZCD 4.02a. Works fine but it takes almost as long to burn a CD as it does to listen to it. The main thing I want to say that is germaine to the thread, when you got a computer that slow, you would be surprised how long it can take to parse certain webpages. I mean when you get the white screen, go take a shower or something, it might just be up when you get out. That's one thing about not having a recommended speed processor for a program, in most cases it will work tirelessly to complete the task. You do not get an indication like you get a harddrive light. Older PCs might even appear to be locked up when they are not. There are however programs that absolutely require the advanced instruction set of a more modern processor. When this happens you'll know because it really will lock up. If you want the most painless upgrade, get a high P3, no higher, clone your drive to a new fast drive and put it in the P3. You'll need your Windows disk and later the abiliy to download drivers. After it gets enough to boot up you go in control panel and remove all the motherboard resources. It goes a bit haywire on the next reboot, and keep the Windows CD handy. You also might need to DL the motherboard drivers, but then it finds the other stuff. You usually need mobo drivers to get proper sound and video even if they are not onboard. I have done this, I have a highly modified and tweaked Win98SE OS and I do not want to lose it. That is why I don't have a new PC. I can play like 25 songs at once and run a video clip on this thing, all in 160 MB of RAM ! I have one serious sendto menu that I built manually, and that is a bit harder in XP. While JPGs and GIFs are still associated with IE, I can send them to Paint shop pro, Irfanview or Adobe editor without the need to open those programs first. If you want any of my older stuff say so, you can have it cheap. T
