Status: offline 		FirmKY ... going even further with your point: It's not just that the Conservatives were "thrown  bones" like the religious right, and finally had enough of it -- they were manipulated very effectively by the same method as every other American -- FEAR.  Each group was given something to be terrified by, and the script finally wore out. It went something like "You have to trust us to be in charge because we are the only ones standing between you and the _____[insert: Terrorists, Homosexuals, Liberals] It's still a dangerous world, but there is probably nothing better that we as a country could do to beat back the power of terrorism than simply learning to stand up to our fears and look at facts.

The conservative voters didn't throw them out -- it was the independents who believed them before and now realize they had voted for liars. And it all starts with the liar in the White House, because the republican congress has just been mindlessly approving his bad ideas.

The republicans may claim they will now get back to their traditional issues, but nobody will believe them when the figurehead of their party is the self-described "compassionate conservative" and "uniter, not a divider" who used to proclaim that it was stupid for our country to engage in nation building in other countries. It is the independents who control the elections and they don't trust republicans now, and they won't in two years because that lame duck liar will still be hogging the spotlight. He needs to disappear in Crawford TX and be forgotten before the conservatives can stand a chance again in national elections.

Perhaps you are mis-understanding.

I said "based on just this statement".  In other words, if I had nothing else to go on.  I said that I wasn't familiar with Senator Coburn. If I had something else that led me to believe that he wasn't worth voting on, I wouldn't. 

I said it for effect and emphasis, not necessarily as an unwavering declaration that he would get my vote until my dying days based solely and exclusively on a single statement.

Better?

"Based on just this sentence" means you would ignore all other factors.  "If this was the only thing I had to go on for all candidates, democracy would suck." is a better way of expressing your thought.

Most everyone can be vile and sarcastic.  It's a choice. How someone reacts to you, whether kind and considerate or vile and sarcastic is what we have little control over.

I understand your point.  When Bita made her comment I had to go back and read my post several times before a light dawned on me what she meant.

But, the sentence prior to the one is question is the important one.  I admitted my ignorance of the Senator.  With that thought in mind, it was plain to me the sense of the second sentence.

But, if you take the second sentence in isolation, I'll grant everything you said.
