Luckily i don't have to worry about using it, slash speak just drives me crazy.  Besides it would take me freaking forever to write something then.

The bottom line is S/some P/pl use it and O/others seem to have an irrational dislike for it.

Many of us hold a quite rational dislike for it, thanks.

A rational dislike would be proportionate to the facts.  It might be based on personal preference, grammatical correctness, legibility, etc.  An irrational dislike is one the rises to the level of anger or even miffed, and seeks to control the conduct of O/others.

Did that help any?

Sorry to leave all the quotes in, but I do have a point.

Your first post implies that there are only two groups.  I know, you say some... and some....  but often, that is used to mean almost all are contained within those two groups.  So maybe adding in a non-offensive opposing party next time may help the misunderstandings.  (Kinda like saying some people like the Beatles, and others seem to be Nazis.)

Second, I can have a rational dislike of something, get slightly emotional, and try to control others' behaviour.  Take kicking puppies (nonconsentually)  Rationally, I dislike it, because it is cruel.  Emotionally, it pisses me off.  And if I see someone kicking a puppy, you can be damn sure I'll send some flowers to their funeral.

So my emotional dislike of T/tH/hI/iS/s can be based on rationality, and still be valid.  Especially if it is inconsistent.

Yours,

benji

I always thought D/dildo looked funny in slashtalk, but the word and the thing both look funny to me anyhow.

Now, a word like V/vagina is like those little puzzles you see around, it has the slash right in it, kinda cute.

P/penis is good cause that is how it works, it gets big but spends most of its time little.

A/ass -- got the crack in it, so it's all good
B/breast -- got big ones and little ones, and the cleavage is right there..........

But after that it becomes rather tiresome to be innundated with the  immense respect and implications  and  profound  thought that goes into it and  reading it, seems to me that a slave/sub is forcing me to pander to their whims....

It doesnt bother Me as I do it to some extent.
I dont do every word in a paragraph,but I will use the slash on occasion.
Like S/someone else mentioned some are trained to do it and its just habit for T/them. [:D]

moverfcouple -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (8/7/2007 11:33:19 PM)

Absolutely!
   100%!
          Kudos!

Language (including English) is a tool:  In order to work well grammar is necessarily and by definition standard, requiring adherence to easily understood and recognizable forms.

That way the tool works reasonably well.  Nonstandard usage does the opposite.  If one desires to indicate submissiveness, check it off in your profile.  Need an honorific?  Try sir (speaking of which, "Sir" with a capital "S" implies being knighted.)

Goodness!  It's not like communications aren't strained enough!

i do it to.  But i understand where you're coming from.  It's just that a long time ago i was taught to smallcase i, and put references to Dominants with caps.

PeggyO -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (8/8/2007 4:03:25 AM)

Hello everyone,

I think it depends on what one's goal is in posting.  If one's primary goal is to communicate clearly, things like slash speak and third party speak are not good vehicles to do that and should be avoided.

If one's purpose is to speak "BDSM jargon", to show that one is "in" the scene or how well one has been trained to use alternative, non standard grammatical structures then go for it.

However, for those who use non-standard speech, keep in mind that you are expecting the reader to do more work because of your preference.  Keep in mind that they may not consent to do that and don't be offended when they choose not to read you.

My view is that if someone really wants me to understand what they are saying, they will express it in the clearest manner possible.  If they choose not to, their primary goal is obviously not to communicate with me.

I am a native English speaker.  There are plenty of non-native English speakers on this site.  English is a hard enough language without adding the complications of slashes and third party speech.  Slash speak and third party speak may not add what folks consider a significant amount of work for the English speaking reader, but for the non-English native it's a hell of a lot of work.  Also, for people who are sight impaired and use software that reads out loud for them, slash speak is impossible.  It totally confuses the software.  These are aspects of non-standard English that I think the people who use it haven't thought about.

Sometimes it's important to think about the effects of one's actions on others.

Take care,

Peggy

Ohh gosh....you're right..this IS an old thread...
sigh
hadn't noticed..

well I was going to comment on the slashy thing but the thread took a fork in the road and went another way...so I will keep it brief ( ya, I actually CAN do that, don't seem to do it often..but can )..
If you type slashy things> I will still read your posts
If you DO not use slashy things> I will still read your posts
If you use run on sentences> I will read your posts, and take a tylenol.
If you say what you mean and mean what you say  > I will appreciate your candor and not care one bit about your font face, size or color..nor the use of action dots, "..........." cuz I use them too.
and
I can gar'ron'tee you that if I pass a park and a bunch of people are having a party/picnic/gathering> I will only be smiling and thinking about how much fun they all must be having, and my thoughts will not be on their sizes or lack thereof....

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: D/does A/anyone E/else T/think T/this? (8/8/2007 4:44:30 PM)

I don't use the slash speak in a Lifestyle manner but I do tend to use his/her when speaking of a situation regarding a lifestyle choice that being gender secific could be construed as insulting or negating another's view.  Is that annoying as well?  Just curious.  Individuals can be very quick to snap in response to a post if they feel someone is being gender specific such as referring to subs in the feminine and dominants in the masculine.  Even if this is a personal life choice and not an intentional slight.  To avoid that whole unpleasantness, I try to be sensitive to the potential confict it might cause.

It's not abuse if it gave it's consent!
