Can anyone provide me with information on the forms used in the Scottish ritual uniting called handfasting? i know that it was an early form of marriage in Celtic Christianity and also had a temporary form that lasted for a year and a day. i am fascinated by this but am also considering its use as a temporary bond to a couple that i have known for years so i am particularly interested in any information on the rituals involved.

There are a couple of things you will have to do. First, look up scottish wedding customes. This will give you many to work from. my favorite was the pinning of the family tartan. Second, look up scottish handfastings. This will bring some pagan sights, but many of the customes and rituals were the same just change out God and Goddess for Holy God.

I agree with CrazyC here. One of my friends is Wiccan and she incorporated handfasting into her traditional wedding ceremony.

Handfastings are a beautiful thing, and depending on the couple can have diffrent levels of intensity. The traditional way that Great Britian, especially Scotland, actually still upheld once christianity came was the year and day. At some point, i am not sure when, even this ritual was ignored in the Catholic church. This was a marriage legally binding for a year and day, and at that time all parties would come back and see where they stand in the relationship. At that point if the couple still felt they should marry for life they would. If though they found that the marriage would not work, they asked for blessings of the seperation from all parties, and went their seperate ways. Since it no longer is a legal act, handfastings can be official the first time by actually getting married and then have the year and a day be the reconfermation of what has already been promiced, or it can be a trail of year and a day. There is alot of spiritual parts to this that make it special.

It's what guy's do when they want a quick release and either don't want to go through the hassle of full out sex with their partner or don't have a partner. You simply grab your meat with one hand then jerk real fast thust the name Hand Fasting. Using lubricants and wickedly disgusting pornography helps increase the speed the process can be completed.

yeah the year and a day is mentioned in thomas hardy's 'the well beloved'. said it was observed custom within living memory. on the isle of portland. though when living memory was for him i dont know lol.
